1. Justice Isa to take charge of Supreme Court today

2. Rs17bn loan helps restore flag carrier`s operations

The cash-strapped Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has managed to get a bank loan, after which its administrative affairs are said to be running smoothly.
`We have managed to get a Rs17 billion loan, after which salaries of employees have been paid and the flight operation is running smoothly,` a PIA spokesman said when contacted by Dawn on Saturday.
In a statement released on Friday, spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan had claimed that the airline was releasing funds and fulfilling its national and international obligations


3. Punjab dists to have organised crime units as CIA stands abolished

The Punjab government has amended the Police Order 2002 and established an Organised Crime Unit (OCU) that replaced the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) with more administrative powers and legal cover.
The unit will handle high-profile cases and other heinous crimes including kidnapping for ransom, extortion, dacoity and robbery with murder.
The OCU has been established as the Punjab governor promulgated the Police Order (Amendment) Ordinance 2023, which has come into force at once. The Punjab law department has issued a gazette notification


4. Ukrainian strike kills one in Russian village

One person died in a Russian village near the border with Ukraine in a Ukrainian strike, the regional governor of Kursk said on Saturday.
Governor Roman Starovoit said on Telegram the village of Plekhovo `was bombarded from Ukraine,` adding that `a man of 30 was killed after receiving injuries from shell shrapnel.` Starovoit said several houses were damaged in the strike on the village a handful of kilometres from the border.
Recent months have seen a number of strikes from Ukrainian territory across into Russia


5. Kim inspects key weapons with Russian defence chief

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met on Saturday with the Russian defence minister in Vladivostok, where he inspected stateof-the-art weapons including a hypersonic missile system on the latest leg of a rare visit outside his country.
Upon arriving in Vladivostok, a Pacific port city near the Chinese and North Korean borders, Kim was greeted by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and an honour guard.
The pair were seen smiling as they inspected some of Russia`s nuclear bombers at an airfield before boarding a warship, a video released by the Russian defence ministry showed

6. IAEA condemns Iran`s barring of inspectors

UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi on Saturday condemned Iran`s `disproportionate and unprecedented` move to bar multiple inspectors assigned to the country, hindering its oversight of Tehran`s atomic activities.
Iran`s move is a response to a call led by the United States, Britain, France and Germany at the International Atomic Energy Agency`s Board of Governors this week for Tehran to cooperate immediately with the IAEA on issues including explaining uranium traces found at undeclared sites


7. Taliban detain INGO staff over `missionary work`

Afghanistan`s Taliban authorities have arrested at least 18 staff of an international non-governmental organisation, including an American woman, accusing them of carrying out Christian missionary work, the country`s leaders said on Saturday.
The International Assistance Mission (IAM), which only works in Afghanistan since its operations begin in 1966, confirmed its staffers were picked up from its office in Ghor province, central Afghanistan, and taken to the capit al Kabul.Security and intelligence forces had been observing the group for some time, Abdul Wahid Hamas Ghori, a government spokesman for the province, said. `Documents and audios were obtained that showed they were inviting people to join Christianity,` he said, without providing further details


8. Aid arrives in flood-hit Libya, but hopes fade for survivors

Shipments of international aid arrived in Libya, mainly from the United Arab Emirates and Iran, on Saturday, offering a lifeline to thousands despite dwindling hopes of finding more survivors days after deadly flash floods.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced 29 tonnes of aid had arrived in the eastern city of Benghazi. An AFP correspondent saw two aidladen planes, one from the UAE and another from Iran, land in Benghazi, more than 300km west of Derna


9. Olson `contrite` after conviction for Qatar lobbying

Richard G. Olson, a former US ambassador to Pakistan, was sentenced on Friday to three years of probation and a $93,350 fine for violating federal laws while lobbying for Qatar.
Mr Olson, however, was not charged with wrongdoing for accepting jewellery from the emir of Dubai and for arranging tuition for a former girlfriend, who is now his wife.
In his 34-year career, Mr Olson served at several key positions, including as the US ambassador to Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, and as the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He retired in 2016


10. Radical Baloch poet Mubarak Qazi is no more

Legendary Balochi language poet Mubarak Qazi passed away on Saturday in Turbat after a prolonged illness at the age of 68.
According to the family, Mr Qazi, who hailed from the coastal town of Pasni, had been in Turbat due to illness for at least two weeks but passed away last night at the residence of a friend. His body was brought to Pasni in a big procession from Turbat where he was buried in a local graveyard in the presence of thousands of people from different walks of life
