1. Kakar reminds world of unkept flood aid pledge

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar urged the global community on Friday to fulfil the commitments they made to Pakistan after last year`s devastating floods and help implement its recovery plans.
Mr Kakar, who is the first interim leader to address the UN General Assembly, used his maiden UN speech to highlight the country`s efforts to revive its ailing economy but also talked about the threat of terrorism confronting Pakistan and Islamabad`s efforts to improve ties with all neighbouring states


2. Mirwaiz released, slams rights violations

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was freed on Friday after 212 weeks of house arrest. Leading the Friday congregation at Srinagar`s Jamia Masjid, as he always did before the disputed annexation of the held valley by India in August 2019, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman called for a peaceful solution to all issues on the terms of the people of Kashmir.
Breaking down as he climbed the pulpit of the mosque to begin his sermon, the Mirwaiz said he would pay any price to stand by the people


3. `Technical` reasons for not giving poll date: official

With criticism growing over the Election Commission of Pakistan`s (ECP) failure to announce a specific date for general elections, a senior ECP official told Dawn on Friday that it was `not technically possible` to do so.
The official, who asked not to be named, argued that the official announcement of an election date will kick-start a formal process that must follow specific timelines in the lead-up to the election


4. SBP adds new category to boost remittances

To accelerate remittances through formal channels, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday introduced a new `diamond` category to the Sohni Dharti Remittance Programme (SDRP), offering enhanced reward points and additional benefits to remitters.
The SBP in a statement said the new category supplements the existing three categories: green (up to $10,000 per annum), gold ($10,001 to $30,000), and platinum (over $30,000).
Former finance minister Ishaq Dar in his budget speech for FY24 had announced the addition of diamond category with enhanced reward points and provision of other benefits such as arms licence of non-prohibited bore, preferential treatment at Pakistan embassies, airports and gratis passport to the diamond category holders


5. Student union set to be revived at QAU

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa on Friday lent his support to a decision to revive the Quaid-i-Azam University`s (QAU) students` union, a move that, it is hoped, will pave the way for the revival of student unions in other universities as well.
The decision was taken during a syndicate meeting chaired by the university`s Vice Chancellor, Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, and attended by the chief justice of Pakistan, who is a member of the forum by virtue of his position. Justice Isa is the second CJP, after former chief justice Rana Bhagwandas, to have attended a QAU syndicate meeting

6. Pakistan`s economy on edge of precipice, warns World Bank

Pakistan is in its tipping point crisis where it should decide to remain a laggard with 40 per cent population living below the poverty line under elite capture and policy decisions driven by strong vested interests of military, political and business leaders or change course to take offer a brighter future.

7. Ukraine attacks Russian navy`s HQ in Crimea

At least one Ukrainian missile struck the headquarters of Russia`s Black Sea naval fleet in the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Friday, and a major cyber attack interrupted internet services on the peninsula.
Russia`s defence ministry said one serviceman was missing after the attack, revising its earlier statement that the man had been killed. Air defences had downed five missiles, the ministry said.
Ukraine`s military confirmed it had attacked the Russian Black Sea fleet`s headquarters


8. China proclaims `strategic partnership` with Syria

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced a `strategic partnership` with Syria on Friday during talks with President Bashar al-Assad, who is seeking financial support to help rebuild his devastated country.
The leaders met on the eve of the Asian Games opening ceremony, which Assad will attend as part of his first visit to China since 2004


9. Israel on the cusp of peace with Saudi Arabia: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday he believed his country was on the cusp of peace with Saudi Arabia, predicting it could be clinched by US President Joe Biden and reshape the Middle East.
Yet, amid urging by Riyadh and Washington that the Palestinians be included in the diplomacy, Netanyahu told the United Nations General Assembly in New York that Palestinians should not be allowed to veto the regional deal-making


10. Seven Caribbean nations to host T20 World Cup

Seven Caribbean countries will host matches at next year`s T20 World Cup, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, the ICC announced on Friday.
The ICC awarded the hosting of the event, to be held in June 2024, to the West Indies and the United States in November 2021.
Dominica, Guyana, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines have also been named as hosts
