1. EU releases another 1m euros to help flood-hit

The European Union has released an additional one million euros in humanitarian aid to respond to Hoods that directly or indirectly affected some 900,000 people in the past weeks.
The new funding comes in addition to the 16.5 million euros already allocated in humanitarian assistance to Pakistan earlier this year, in order to assist the most vulnerable population affected by conflict and climate-induced disasters


2. Magisterial powers given to Balochistan environment department

The Balochistan caretaker cabinet on Monday approved powers of magistrate for the provincial environment department to ensure improved environment conditions in the province.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the cabinet, presided over by caretaker Chief Minister Mir Ali Mardan Domki here on Monday.
The powers have been given to the environment department under Section 1 of Sub-section 32 of the Balochistan Environmental Protection Act, 2012

3. Govt borrows Rs1.6tr in 70 days

Despite higher taxation on almost all sectors of the economy, the government has rigorously been borrowing for budgetary support since the outset of the current fiscal year.
The data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Monday showed that the government borrowed Rs1,600 billion in the first 70 days (July 1 to Sept 8) of this fiscal year against Rs261bn in the same period last year.
In other words, the government borrowed over Rs22.8bn per day to meet it s expenditures


4. `Missing` anchor Imran Riaz back home after four months

Anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan, who `went missing` over four months ago, finally returned home `safely` on Monday morning.
Punjab police IG Usman Anwar and Sialkot DPO Hassan Iqbal confirmed that the missing anchorperson was back home.
However, his mysterious disappearance and surprise appearance has shocked many, leaving questions as to where he was during the time that he had been `missing`


5. US exploring potential space force hotline with China

The United States Space Force has had internal discussions about setting up a hotline with China to prevent crises in space, US commander General Chance Saltzman said on Monday.
The chief of space operations said a direct line of communication would be valuable in de-escalating tensions but that the US had not yet engaged with China to establish one.
`What we have talked about on the US side at least is opening up a line of communication to make sure that if there is a crisis, we know who we can contact,` Saltzman said, adding that it would be up to President Joe Biden and the State Department to take the lead on such discussions

6. Biden recognises two Pacific nations in move to counter Beijing

President Joe Biden said the United States officially recognised the Pacific nations of Cook Islands and Niue on Monday, as he hosted regional leaders in a bid to wrest influence from China.
The announcement came at the start of a summit with the 18-member Pacific Islands Forum, where US officials said the president was announcing a more assertive American stance in the region


7. Ukraine receives US-made Abrams tanks

Ukraine has received US Abrams battle tanks, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday, boosting Kyiv`s forces as they seek to break through heavily-fortified Russian defensive lines.
The announcement came just after Ukraine claimed it had killed the commander of Russia`s Black Sea fleet in a missile strike on Moscow`s naval headquarters in Crimea last week in what would be a major embarrassment for Russia


8. Kosovo calls upon Serbia to hand over escaped gunmen after shootout

Kosovo called on Serbia on Monday to hand over ethnic Serb gunmen it said had escaped after a shootout with Kosovar police that killed four people in the restive north of the country, aggravating tensions between Pristina and Belgrade.
The gunmen stormed the village of Banjska on Sunday, battling police and barricading themselves into a Serbian Orthodox monastery


9. Cuban embassy in US attacked with Molotov cocktails

Cuba`s embassy in Washington was attacked by a man using two Molotov cocktails on Sunday night, the country`s foreign minister said, describing the incident as a `terrorist attack`.
`The Cuban embassy in the US was the target of a terrorist attack by an individual who launched 2 Molotov cocktails. The staff suffered no harm,` said Bruno Rodriguez in a post on social media platform X. This was the second attack against the Cuban mission in Washington in recent years, after a man opened fire on the building in April 2020.
There were no injuries from that attack


10. Sicilian Mafia boss dies, taking his secrets with him

Sicilian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, captured in January after three decades on the run, died on Monday in hospital in central Italy, taking to the grave the secrets of his brutal reign.
The 61-year-old had been treated for colon cancer while detained in a high security jail in L`Aquila but was moved last month to hospital after his condition deteriorated
