  1. Kh Mohammad Asif will represent Pakistan in SCO FMs meeting in Beijing
  • Foreign Minister Kh Mohammad Asif will represent Pakistan in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation scheduled for April 24, 2018 in Beijing.
  • He would also hold a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the event.
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair the meeting which is meant to lay groundwork for the SCO Qingdao Summit scheduled to be held in June.
  1. IRSA increases water shares of Punjab, Sindh
  • The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has increased water shares of Punjab and Sindh by 13,000 cusecs and 7,000 cusecs, respectively, in the wake of increased river inflows following recent rain spell in different parts of the country.
  • IRSA has improved the water inflows to the rivers and reviewed the water situation in the wake of recent rains. The rain spell has increased river inflows from 90,000 cusecs to 141,000 cusecs (increase of 51,000 cusecs). Storage increased from 0.2 million acre feet (MAF) to 0.426 MAF. Therefore, keeping in view increased water situation, provincial shares have been revised (increased) to 61000 cusecs from 48000 cusecs for Punjab and to 40000 cusecs from 33000 cusecs for Sindh. CJ Link canal has been opened with discharge of 2000 cusecs and for Greater Thal Canal (GTC) KP 3100 cusecs.
  1. 100m Pakistanis without a bank account, says World Bank
  • Pakistan is home to 100 million adults without a bank account, with 13 per cent adults citing religious concerns as a reason for not having account at a financial institution, a World Bank report on the use of financial services revealed.
  • The `Global Findex Database` said high costs turned out to be at least as important as religious concerns in each of the economies cited by 21pc in Pakistan and 19pc in Turkey. And the share who reported religious concerns as their sole reason for not having an account was minuscule 2pc in Pakistan and 1pc in Turkey.
  • As a whole in South Asia, the share of adults without an account rose by 23pc, to 70pc. Globally, about 1.7 billion adults remain unbanked without an account at a financial institution or through a mobile money provider compared to2bn in 2014.
  1. No military aim of CPEC in Pakistan: China
  • China has strongly refuted suggestions its multibillion-dollar economic corridor now under construction in Pakistan has “hidden” military designs as well.
  • Beijing has pledged to invest about $63 billion in Pakistan by 2030 to develop ports, highways, motorways, railways, airports, power plants and other infrastructure in the neighbouring country, traditionally a strong ally.
  • The Chinese have also expanded and operationalised the Pakistani deep water port of Gwadar on the Arabian Sea, which is at the heart of the massive bilateral cooperation, known as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, or CPEC. The strategically located port is currently being operated by a Chinese state-run company.
  1. Rs30 bn gated golf community to be built in Gwadar
  • State-owned Chinese construction company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), has announced that it has entered into an agreement for the construction of Gwadar’s first luxury gated golf community with a Pakistani company.
  • Empire Properties, the Pakistan registered company, and the CCECC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as the prospective contractor for the construction of the China-Pak Golf Estates, Gwadar’s first luxury golf community.
  • The $265 million (Rs30 billion approx) development is a milestone in the development of Gwadar and will deliver the emerging port city’s most premier residential and lifestyle destination.

  1. India to seize property of super-rich fugitives
  • Indian authorities will be empowered to seize properties of super-rich fugitives whose economic offences or crimes involve sums over 1 billion rupees ($15 million), according to a government document.
  • The move comes as the country reels from a series of banking scandals, including a $2 billion fraud at the state-run Punjab National Bank that was uncovered in February.
  • Mumbai jewellers Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are prime suspects in the case and a special court of India´s Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) this month issued non-bailable warrants against them. But authorities say the two men left the country before the fraud was uncovered.

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he would halt nuclear tests and intercontinental missile launches, in a April 21, 2018 announcement welcomed by US President Donald Trump ahead of a much-anticipated summit between the two men.
  • Pyongyang’s declaration, long sought by Washington, will be seen as a crucial step in the fast diplomatic dance on and around the Korean peninsula.
  • It comes less than a week before the North Korean leader meets South Korean President Moon Jae-in for a summit in the Demilitarised Zone that divides the peninsula, ahead of the eagerly-awaited encounter with Trump himself.

  1. China carries out aircraft carrier drills in Pacific
  • China has carried out aircraft carrier drills in the Pacific, its navy said April 21, 2018, ramping up tensions with Taiwan over its military exercises in the sensitive region.
  • Beijing’s sole aircraft carrier and two destroyer ships carried out “offensive and defensive drills to test their combat muscle”, China’s navy said.
  • The exercises took place in an area east of the Bashi Channel, which runs between Taiwan and the Philippines.
  • China sees democratically-governed Taiwan as a renegade part of its territory to be brought back into the fold and has not ruled out reunification by force. In Beijing’s latest military drills, photos showed J-15 fighters waiting to take off from the Liaoning aircraft carrier.
  1. Heavy gunfire reported near Saudi king’s palace
  • Heavy gunfire has broken out near the royal palace in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh. Authorities have confirmed a shooting in the city amid wildly conflicting social media reports on the cause.
  • Videos posted on Twitter in which it appears bullets can be heard were captured allegedly near the royal residence, sparking a frenzy of confused claims. Early reports suggested gunfire broke out as part of an attempted coup.
  • But Saudi and foreign journalists countered that a drone had flown near a security checkpoint, causing it to be shot down.

  • The US Agency for International Development (USAID) through Schunaizia Relief and Development Organisation (SRDO) has launched Raye-O-Rah, a dedicated website (www.rayeorah.com) and mobile app for the citizens of Peshawar on April 21, 2018.
  • The objective of the website and mobile application is to provide an opportunity to the citizens of Peshawar to submit candid feedback on the quality of local public services available.
