  1. Pakistan renews pledge to work for regional peace

    • Former chief of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and leading political figure of yesteryear retired Air Marshal Asghar Khan died at the Combined Military Hospital on January 5, 2018 morning after a long illness. He was 96
  2. Eminent poet Rasa Chughtai died on January 5, 2018
    • He was 89. Rasa was born in 1928 as Mirza Mohtashim Ali Baig in Sawai Madhupur district of the Indian state of Rajasthan. He was stuck in an Indian camp in 1950 and arrived in Karachi several months later in 1951 because of the volatile situation both in India and Pakistan.

    • Michael Wolff, the author of “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” said he spent three hours with Trump during the presidential campaign and in the White House, rebutting Trump’s claim he never spoke with the writer for the book
  6. Erdogan accuses US, Israel of ‘meddling’ in Pakistan, Iran
    • A total of 21 people died and hundreds were arrested in the week-long protests which were the biggest challenge to the Islamic regime since the 2009 mass demonstrations
    • Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani spoke in a call in which the Turkish leader gave his support for the return of “peace and stability” to Iran
  7. North, South Korea agree to first talks in two years
    • North and South Korea agreed on January 5, 2018 to hold their first talks in more than two years, hours after Seoul and Washington decided to defer joint military exercises which always infuriate Pyongyang until after the Winter Olympics
    • The meeting, the first since December 2015, will take place in Panmunjom, the truce village in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone that divides the peninsula
  8. S Arabia intercepts Yemen rebel ballistic missile
    • Saudi Arabia on January 5, 2018 intercepted a ballistic missile fired from Yemen into the kingdom’s south, as Riyadh and its allies said the attack “proved” Iran’s support for Yemen’s Huthi rebels
  9. Pak, China economic, defence ties to boost after Trump’s outburst
    • US President Donald Trump’s recent outburst on Pakistan will further boost economic and defence ties between Islamabad and Beijing, including China acquiring a Pakistani military base close to Iran’s Chabahar port
