  1. Army links Fata stability to its `mainstreaming`
    • As the army began handing over security responsibility of areas cleared of militancy to civilian authorities, the top military command on April 11, 2018 re-emphasised the need for mainstreaming the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) an issue that is seemingly again on the back burner amid changing political priorities.
    • `Key dividend remains linked to mainstreaming of Fata in line with popular public sentiments,` the InterServices Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release after the corps commanders conference held at the General Headquarters. The `key dividend` is peace and stability of the area.
    • The mainstreaming of Fata has always been a slowpaced process due to opposition by certain lobbies. The small steps taken so f ar have, moreover, been erratic.
  2. US, Pakistan likely to restrict diplomats` movements
    • The United States and Pakistan are engaged in a diplomatic dispute which despite denials from both sides could lead to strict restrictions on the movement of their diplomats.
    • The Trump administration has notified Pakistani authorities that diplomats at their embassy in Washington and at consulates in other cities will not be able to travel beyond 40km from their posts without permission.
    • The notice, shared with the Pakistan Embassy in Washington and sent also to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, indicates that the restrictions could be imposed from May 1, if certainissues remained unresolved
  3. NA unanimously passes Comsats University Bill
    • The National Assembly on April 11, 2018 unanimously passed The Comsats University Islamabad Bill, 2017 without any amendments so it can become law during the tenure of the current government.
    • Already passed by Senate, the bill will be sent to the president and as soon as he signs it, Comsats will be declared a university. It was decided that the concerns of parliamentarians will be addressed while making the rules for the new law.
    • The bill was tabled by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Rana Tanveer Hussain in the house. Opposition panies had also opposed the tabling of the bill and voting was held in order to decide if the bill should be tabled at all.
  4. `President rejected 513 mercy petitions of death row prisoners in last five years`
    • Pakistan is among the five most prolific executioners in the world with 487 executions in the last three years, while the president has rejected 513 mercy petitions in the last five years, a report launched on April 11, 2018 has found.
    • The report, No Mercy: A Report on Clernency for Death Row Prisoners in Pakistan, was launched by Justice Project Pakistan.
    • It said that the government has executed nearly 500 people since lif ting the moratorium on the death penaltyin 2014.
    • And although the president possesses the constitutional authority under Article 45 to pardon death row defendants, in practice in such petitions have been consistently denied since December 2014, operating under a blanket policy for cases with strong evidence of humanitarian abuse and violations.
  5. Azerbaijan autocrat wins election
    • Azerbaijan strongman Ilham Aliyev secured afourth consecutive term on April 11, 2018 in a snap election boycotted by the main opposition parties, exit polls showed.
    • An Aliyev victory was widely seen as a foregone conclusion with the Caspian state`s downtrodden opposition unable to mount a serious challenge to his authoritarian rule.
    • In power for 15 years, Aliyev received 82.7 per centof the vote,according to a government-commissioned exit poll, while the private French pollster Opinion Way said he garnered 86.5 per cent of the vote.

  6. Over 250 killed as Algeria`s military plane crashes
    • Algeria suffered its deadliest air C Atastrophe on April 11, 2018 when a military plane crashed near the capital, killing 257 people on board, mostly army personnel and their family members.
    • Fire-fighters extinguished the blaze and security forces set up a cordon to prevent journalists and onlookers from approaching.
  7. After 9 years Swat checkposts handed over to civil admin
    • Commissioner Malakand Zaheer-ul-Islam and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Swat Akhtar Hayat Khan Gandapur on April 11, 2018 confirmed that that check posts and policing powers had been handed over to the civil administration in the valley.
    • The civil administration resumed its powers after 9 years, which, would be extended to other districts of the division as well in coming days. Pak Army had taken control of the division under Section 245 of the Constitution during the strong hold of the militants in Swat.
    • Peace has been completely restored in the region and the civil administration is capable of handling the security affairs while the army would support the civil administration when required.
  8. Pakistan, Kuwait Fund sign loan accord
    • Pakistan and the Kuwait Fund on April 11, 2018 signed Supplementary Loan Agreement of KD 4.5 million (equivalent to $1500million) for Golen Gol Hydropower Project. The State of Kuwait has already been co-financing this project with an amount of KD 11.00 million (equivalent to $3700million).
    • Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) Deputy Director General Ghanem Sulaiman Al-Ghenaiman signed the document on behalf of the Kuwait Fund while Economic Affairs Division Secretary Syed Ghazanfar Abbas Jilani signed it on behalf of the Government of Pakistan.
  9. Saudi Aramco signs $44b deal for mega Indian refinery
    • Saudi Aramco on April 11, 2018 announced a $44-billion deal to build a giant refinery complex in India with three Indian firms that will become a crucial new outlet for the world’s biggest supplier.
    • The refinery at Ratnagiri on the west coast will be able to process up to 1.2 million barrels of crude a day, the Saudi company said after signing a memorandum of understanding with Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation.
    • Ratnagiri will be among the world’s largest “refining and petrochemicals projects and will be designed to meet India’s fast-growing fuels and petrochemicals demand. The project cost is estimated at around $44 billion,”.
  10. Saudi crown prince arrives in Madrid on last stop of global tour
    • Saudi Arabia’s crown prince arrived in Madrid on April 11, 2018 on the last stop of his global diplomatic charm offensive in a bid to project a new liberal image of his conservative kingdom.
    • Spain’s defence minister, Maria Dolores Cospedal greeted Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who serves as defence minister and also controls economic policy for the world’s top oil exporter, at a military air base at Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid.
    • Cospedal was representing Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis who is accompanying Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on an official visit to Argentina.
    • Prince Mohammed is scheduled to meet with Spain’s King Felipe VI, who acceded to the throne in 2014, on Thursday morning before holding talks later in the day with Rajoy.
