  1. Prime Minister inaugurates 969MW project in AJK
    • Terming it a historic moment in the provision of sustainable energy supply, Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi on April 13, 2018 inaugurated the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
    • The run-of-the-river power scheme is designed to divert water from the Neelum River to the power station on the Jhelum River and will produce 969MW of electricity.
  2. SC hands Nawaz Sharif lifetime ban
    • In a historic judgment that will leave a deep imprint on country’s politics and serve as a key determinant of its future course, the Supreme Court on April 13, 2018 ruled that disqualification handed down under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution is for whole life.
    • The decision – issued unanimously by all five judges of a CJP-led bench and read out by Justice Umar Ata Bandial – stated that the disqualification of any member of parliament or a public servant under this constitutional clause in the future will be “permanent”.
    • Article 62(1)(f) sets the precondition for a member of parliament to be “sadiq and ameen” (honest and righteous). And according to Friday’s court decision, those disqualified under this clause cannot contest elections or become a member of parliament.
  3. Senate adopts bill extending superior courts` jurisdiction to Fata
    • A bill seeking to extend jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and the Peshawar High Court to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) sailed through the Senate on April 13, 2018 amid opposition from senators of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F (JUI-F) and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP).
    • The bill that has already been passed by the National Assembly will become an act of parliament after its formal assent by the president.
    • Senators belonging to the JUI-F clashed verbally with those from the PPP when Senator Atta-ur-Rehman of the former accused the latter of supporting the bill after getting `dictation from some forces`.
  4. China air force chief visits PAF academy
    • Commander of People’s Liberation Air Force of China Ding Laihang has said that Pakistan and China enjoy friendly and brotherly relations and cooperated in various fields.
    • “Pakistan and China are enjoying extremely good and friendly relations,” Commander of People’s Liberation Air Force of China Dang Laihang said, while addressing the passing out parade of GD Pilots at the PAF Asghar Khan Academy, Risalpur as chief guest on Friday.
    • Chinese air chief congratulated the passing out cadets. He said that Pakistan and China had established an all weather friendship.
  5. ADB offers $375m for irrigation services in Punjab
    • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the government signed on April 13, 2018 two loans totalling $375 million to improve irrigation services and promote public-private partnerships (PPP) in Punjab.
    • The irrigation project will become part of the Indus Basin Irrigation System and directly benefit the farming families of the target area, while the PPP project will strengthen the capacity of the provincial government to improve key infrastructure and service deliveryin the province.

  6. China-gifted statue erected at Marx`s German birthplace
    • A massive statue of the founding father of communism was erected in his birthplace on April 13, 2018, after the southern German city of Trier decided to accept the bronze sculpture from China despite concerns over the country`s human rights record.
    • The three-tonne Karl Marx statue was erected ahead of the 200th birthday of the influential thinker and philosopher on May 5, when it will be unveiled.
    • The 19th century thinker spent the first 17 years of his life in Trier near the Luxembourg border.
  7. Pakistan beat Canada 3-1 to finish seventh in Commonwealth Games hockey
    • Pakistan team came from behind to beat Canada 3-1 and clinch the seventh position in the XXI Commonwealth Games hockey competition here on April 13, 2018.
    • Canada went ahead in the first quarter through James Kirkpatrick goal in open play.
    • The North Americans kept the lead intact till the end of the second quarter although Pakistan were far better side in the second half.
  8. Syria crisis: UN chief says Cold War is back
    • The UN’s secretary general has said the Cold War is “back with a vengeance”, BBC reported on April 13, 2018
    • Antonio Guterres also warned about the dangers of escalation over Syria.
    • The US and its allies are considering launching missile strikes against Syria after a suspected chemical attack, an action which Russia – whose forces are there supporting the government- has said would risk starting a war.
    • Russia has accused the UK of faking an attack, an allegation Britain dismissed as a “grotesque, blatant lie”.

  9. SA passes universities bill amid protest
    • The ruling Pakistan People Party once again used its numeric power in the provincial assembly to pass a controversial bill pertaining to handing over powers of the 24 public sector universities to the chief minister despite protest and walk out from the opposition parties who termed the bill a bid to destroy education system.
    • The discussion and consideration of the bill titled Sindh Universities and Institutes Amendment Bill 2018 which was deferred from last proceedings continued on April 13, 2018 and the bill was later approved from the house with a majority vote as the opposition parties tore the copies of the bill and staged protest and walkout from the proceedings.
    • The bill was earlier passed on March 9 of this year with a majority vote from the assembly but was later sent back by the Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair Umar to the house for reconsideration, using his one-time power to reject the bill.
  10. Russian court rules to block Telegram messaging app
    • A Moscow court on April 13, 2018 ruled to block the popular messaging app Telegram in Russia, after it refused to give state security services access to private conversations.
    • The ruling follows a long-running battle between authorities and Telegram, which has a reputation for secure communications, as Moscow pushes to increase surveillance of internet activities.
