  1. PM, COAS in S. Arabia to witness joint drills closing
    • Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi arrived Saudi Arabia on April 15, 2018 to join other world leaders to witness the closing ceremony of the 24-country joint military exercise.

    • In its repon, `South Asia Economic Focus Spring 2018` released on April 15, 2018, the World Bank has noted that Pakistan`s economic growth continues to accelerate but macroeconomic imbalances are widening.
    • The balance of payments position is panicularly vulnerable at the current level of reserves, claimed the repon.
  3. New visa policy for UAE transit passengers
    • The cabinet of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has approved a plan to grant entry visas to transit passengers across all the UAE airports who wish to visit the country’s tourist attractions.
    • The new policy aims to enhance transit visa procedures to enable stopover passengers to enjoy a day out in the country, thus boosting the tourism industry.
    • The working group, led by Federal Authority for Identity and Nationality, will propose a general policy for transit visas. The policy will include visa fee and mechanism to increase the number of visitors.

    • Hungary`s Prime Minister Viktor Orban retained his controlling two-thirds majority in parliament following last week`s election, a final ballot count revealed on April 15, 2018, giving him free legislative rein for the next four years.
    • But its two-thirds majority remained in doubt until ballots from abroad which could have changed the outcome in severalvoting districts-were counted.

    • Scientists say they have identified genes that cause a deadly heart condition that can only be cured by transplants of the heart or lungs.
    • Pulmonary arterial hypertension kills 50% of those affected within five years, but little was known about what caused the condition in some people.
    • Now experts say they have discovered five genes that cause the illness.
    • The findings could lead to earlier detection of the disease and ultimately new treatments.

  6. UN official asks India, Pakistan to resolve issues peacefully
    • A senior United Nations official has urged India and Pakistan to address their “outstanding issues” through peaceful means, reiterating Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ concern over the growing tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region.
    • UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca made these remarks during his talks with top Pakistani officials during a visit to Pakistan which ended on April 13, according to a statement issued by UN spokesman’s office.
  7. New push for referendum on final Brexit deal
    • A new cross-party campaign for a referendum on Britain’s EU departure deal was to launch on Sunday, insisting the British public — and not just politicians — should be given a say.
    • Calling itself the People’s Vote campaign, the push wants a referendum so that the public can decide whether they think the final Brexit agreement will leave Britain better or worse off. The campaign was to launch in London with speakers from the governing Conservative Party, as well as the opposition Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green parties, and “Star Trek” actor Patrick Stewart.
    • It is run by Open Britain, which grew out of the official Remain campaign of the 2016 referendum. It includes seven other anti-Brexit groups who operate out of the same London office, plus Wales for Europe.
  8. Israel destroys Gaza tunnel
    • Israel’s on April 15, 2018 had destroyed a Hamas tunnel crossing from the Gaza Strip into its territory after more than two weeks of tension along the border of the Palestinian enclave.
    • Israel destroyed the tunnel — which it said connected to several others within Gaza and could have been used for attacks — by filling it with material to make it inoperative. “We filled the tunnel with material that renders it useless for a very long period of time,” Conricus said. Explosives were not used.

    • Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions on April 15, 2018 as Manchester United crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion.
    • City had moved within touching distance of the title with a 3-1 win at Tottenham on April 14, 2018. They clinched the silverware 24 hours later thanks to Albion forward Jay Rodriguez’s 73rd minute header at Old Trafford.
  10. Award-winning Italian filmmaker Vittorio Taviani dies
    • Italian filmmaker and Cannes Film Festival winner Vittorio Taviani has died aged 88, on April 15, 2018.
    • Born in San Miniato, Tuscany, on September 20, 1929, Taviani died in Rome after suffering from a long-term illness
    • Taviani and his brother Paolo formed one of cinema’s greatest directorial duos and made politically engaged films together for over half a century.
    • One of their best-known was the gritty biopic “Padre Padrone”, set in Sardinia, which won the top Palme d’Or prize at Cannes in 1977.
