  • The United States has sought Islamabad`s help in tracing threats to US President Donald Trump originating from Pakistan, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) informed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Government Assurances on April 23, 2018.
  • FIA Cyber Crimes director retired Capt Muhammad Shoaib told the lawmakers that it was hard to identify the culprits behind the posts depicting Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan as Lord Shiva, and the alleged threats made to President Trump.
  • The US authorities had last week contacted the FIA with a complaint that someone had threatened Mr Trump and sought help to identify the person who had sent the message

  1. Pakistan, China pledge to work for regional stability through SCO
  • Foreign Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif has said that Pakistan and China have resolved to enhance bilateral cooperation with the pledge to play a key role for regional stability through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

    • Naval Chief Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi has reached Iran to attend the 6th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium which started in Tehran on April 23, 2018.
    • Naval Chief Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi will also hold meetings with Iranian high officials and services chiefs.
    • The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium is a series of biennial meetings among member countries to discuss matters pertaining to maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.
  2. Pakistan, Russia agree to promote multifaceted cooperation
  • A high-level inter-ministerial delegation led by National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd) Nasser Khan Janjua concluded its visit to Russia on April 23, 2018.
  • The visit took place on the invitation of Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev. This was the first ever inter-ministerial level delegation’s visit to Moscow in which the National Security Advisers of the two countries met each other.
  • Pakistan delegation included senior representatives comprising secretaries, additional secretaries and Maj. Generals from National Security Division, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence Production, Strategic Plans Division, Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and Intelligence.

  • Paraguay’s Mario Abdo Benitez, who represents the country’s long-dominant Colorado conservatives, was elected as president on April 22, 2018, landing the top job in one of Latin America’s poorest countries.
  • The US-educated son of a senior aide to the country’s late dictator, Abdo Benitez won slightly more than 46 percent of the vote, with his centrist opponent Efrain Alegre taking almost 43 percent in a race that was far closer than expected.
  • Opinion polls had consistently given Abdo Benitez, 46, a clear lead of up to 20 points over Alegre in a two-man contest to succeed outgoing conservative President Horacio Cartes.
  1. Iran bans use of cryptocurrencies
  • Iran`s central bank has officially banned the use of cryptocurrencies in financial transactions in order to prevent money laundering and terrorism.
  • The move is seen as part of Tehran`s efforts to control the currency market af ter the rial hit an all-time low earlier this month.
  • The ban applies to `all monetary and financial centres of the country,` including banks, financial institutions and currency exchange of fices.
  • Though cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin, have never been authorised in Iran, they were available in parallel markets.
  • Cryptocurrencies are created and exchanged independent of banks or governments. Transactions are typically anonymous, but the currency can be converted into cash when deposited into accounts at prices set in online trading.
  1. Pakistan finish second in Asian judo event
  • Pakistan claimed second place in the 8th South Asian Senior Judo Championships in Kathmandu by bagging two gold, three silver and as many bronze medals in the individual events.
  • On day one, Pakistan secured two gold and as many silver medals. Olympian Shah Hussain and emerging judoka Qaiser Khan secured one gold medal each, whereas Maryam and Humaira Ashig won a silver medal each.
