  1. Federal cabinet declares April 6 as Kashmir Solidarity Day
    • The federal cabinet in its special meeting Monday declared that Kashmir Solidarity Day would be observed on Wednesday (April 6) in support of Kashmiri people and against Indian brutalities.
    • The federal cabinet met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi wherein Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif gave a presentation on the situation in Indian occupied Kashmir (IOK).

    • Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua visited Kabul on April 2, 2018 for continuing negotiations on a bilateral engagement plan Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity and held meetings with President Ashraf Ghani and other senior Afghan of ficials.
    • She was accompanied by Director General of Military Operations Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza and other security of ficials.
    • The second round of PakAfghan talks on the engagement plan focusing on peace and security issues held in February had ended without making any headway on its key elements because the Afghan delegation felt that their priorities were notbeing addressed.
  3. Pakistan moves to address deficiencies in AML, CFT regime
    • Pakistan is preparing to develop a consolidated database of known terrorists and terrorist organisations which will be accessible for financial institutions and law enforcement agencies of the country as the country has moved to address deficiencies in the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing Terrorism regime.
    • The move comes on the heels of the plenary meeting of Financial Action Task Force (FATF) held on February 18-23 in Paris in which the Force approved nomination proposal tabled jointly by the US, UK, France and Germany to place Pakistan in the Grey List of FATF.
    • Realising the consequences, Pakistan is fast moving to address the deficiencies in the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing Terrorism regime identified in the nomination proposal approved by the Financial Action Task Force in February and has prepared a draft action plan in this regard. The draft action plan also includes development of a consolidated database of known terrorists and terrorist organisations and access of this database to financial institutions and LEAs and concrete steps to prevent illicit cross-border transportation of currency. Several meetings have so far been held to discuss the draft action plan, according to the officials involved in the process. The action plan would be implemented at a fast pace, according to the officials who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity.
  4. President confers Nishan-i-Imtiaz on Turkish naval chief
    • President Mamnoon Hussain Monday conferred Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) on Vice Admiral Adnan Ozbal, Commander of Turkish Naval Forces.
    • The president said that it was difficult to express the depth of the relations between Pakistan and Turkey in words. He underlined that Pakistan respects the role of Turkey in resolving the challenges faced by the Muslim Ummah.
    • The president said that Pakistan and Turkey will continue to support each other at the international forums. He underscored that there was a strong cooperation between the democratic institutions of both countries.
  5. Minister from Balochistan quits federal cabinet
    • Minister of State for Petroleum Jam Kamal Khan has resigned from the federal cabinet in an apparent move to join the newly formed Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).
    • Mr Kamal had handed over his resignation to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi last week and it was accepted by President Mamnoon Hussain on April 2, 2018.
    • In exercise of powers conferred by Clause 3 of Article 92 of the Constitution, the president on the advice of the prime minister has been pleased to accept the resignation tendered by Jam Kamal Khan from the office of the minister of state for petroleum with effect from March 29.

    • Iran, Russia and Turkey have teamed up to forge a strong if brittle tripartite alliance aimed at holding ascendancy in Syria, taking advantage of the West`s reluctance to engage militarily in the country.
    • The presidents of the three countries, long seen as regional rivals rather than strategic allies, will meet on April 4, 2018 in Ankara for their second three way summit on Syria in a striking demonstration of unity.
    • This meeting, which follows the first tripartite summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Iran`s Hassan Rouhani in Sochi last November, comes with Turkey seeking a louder voice after launching an of fensive against Kurdish militia inside Syria.

    • Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has secured a second term with 97 percent of valid votes, according to official results announced April 2, 2018, at an election last week that saw him face no serious rivals.
    • The head of the election authority Lasheen Ibrahim said at a press conference that turnout was 41.05 percent of the almost 60 million registered voters.

  9. COAS confirms death to 10 terrorists
    • Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on April 2, 2018 confirmed death sentences awarded to 10 hardcore terrorists, who were involved in heinous offences related to terrorism, including those who killed renowned QawwalAmjad Farid Sabri.
    • The convicts were also involved in the killing of innocent civilians and attacking Pearl Continental Hotel Peshawar as well as law enforcement agencies/armed forces of Pakistan. On the whole, they were involved in killing 62 persons including five civilians, 11 police officials and 46 Frontier Constabulary/armed forces personnel. Arms and explosives were also recovered from their possession. These convicts were tried by special military courts.
  10. Israel cancels plan to deport African migrants
    • Israel announced on April 2, 2018 it had reached a deal with the UN refugee agency to cancel a controversial plan to deport African migrants and replace it with a new one that will see thousands sent to Western countries.
    • The deal means thousands more of the primarily Sudanese and Eritrean migrants will remain in Israel at least temporarily. It also ends the possibility that many would be forcibly deported to an unnamed African country, widely believed to be Uganda or Rwanda.
    • A minimum of 16,250 migrants will be resettled in Western nations including Canada, Germany and Italy under the agreement announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
