  1. Islamabad, Kabul to reframe terms of engagement
    • Pakistan and Afghanistan on April 6, 2018 agreed to finalise their bilateral dialogue framework as the former reaffirmed support for the Afghan government`s offer of peace dialogue to the Taliban and urged the militant group to join the reconciliation process without any delay.
    • The agreement on the bilateral dialogue framework Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS) was reached during Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi`s daylong trip to Kabul.
    • Mr Abbasi held talks with President Ashraf Ghani and met other Afghan leaders, including Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and High Peace Council chief Karim Khalili.
  2. PIA has introduced a new livery with its logo and design
    • Adviser to Prime Minister on Aviation Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan has inaugurated a new livery of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on April 6, 2018.
    • The national flag carrier has introduced a new livery with its logo and design to include a painting of markhor, a national animal which inhabits the mountainous regions of Pakistan. Markhor will be visible on the aircraft tail, while the cockpit of PIA planes integrates Pakistan’s flag and the word PIA written in English and Urdu.

    • Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi conferred military awards on Pakistan Navy officers, CPOs/POs and sailors during an impressive investiture ceremony held at Bahria Auditorium.
    • The recipients of Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) were Commodore Dr Muhammad Junaid, Cdre S Ahmad Ovais Hyder Zaidi, Cdre Habib-Ur-Rehman, Cdre M Faisal Abbasi, Cdre Saqib Jamil Khattak, Cdre Jawad Ahmed Awan, Cdre Shahid Ahmed, Cdre Mohammad Tahir, Cdre Muhammad Ahsan Dar, Cdre Syed Ahmed Salman and Cdre Dr M Saeed Khalid.
    • Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military) was awarded to Captain Nasir Mahmood PN, Captain M Mehtab Khan, Commander Agha Murtaza Mirza, Cdr Muhammad Tahir, Cdr M Nauman Akmal Khan, Cdr Yasir Ikram, M Hasan Adil, Cdr Ali Hyder, Cdr Ghulam Murtaza, Cdr Atif Perwaiz, Cdr Zohaib Najam Baig, Cdr Abdul Mateen, Lt Cdr Muhammad Zia Ullah PN, Lt Cdr Kashif Ahmed Khan, and Lt Cdr Shahab Aziz
  4. Islamabad airport to become operational from April 20
    • The newly-built Islamabad International Airport is set to kick-start operations for regular domestic and international flights from April 20.
    • According to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will operate a first mock flight from the New Islamabad International Airport. The mock flight will carry PIA staff members and their families.
    • Operations of Benazir Bhutto International Airport will be shifted to the new airport by 19 April.
    • Spreading 19 square kilometres, the “Y” shaped new airport will be the biggest international airport of the country in terms of landing and passenger handling facilities. It has two runways each 3.5 km long.
  5. Virgin Galactic tests rocket for carrying tourists to space
    • Virgin Galactic`s new spaceship climbed at supersonic speed over California`s Mojave Desert on April 6, 2018 in the company`s first powered flight since the fatal crash of its original rocketship in 2014.
    • The flight of VSS Unity was a major step forward, said the company, which plans to carry tourists on suborbital hops into the lower reaches of space where they can see the Earth far below and the stars beyond.
    • Virgin Galactic said the milestone marked the start of the final portion of Unity`s flight test programme, which began after a 2014 test-flight crash of its predecessor, VSS Enterprise, that killed one of its two pilots and set back the project.

  6. Malaysia`s PM dissolves parliament, paves way for toughest election yet
    • Malaysia`s Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the dissolution of parliament on April 6, 2018, paving the way for a general election showdown with his old mentor and the country`s most seasoned campaigner, Mahathir Mohamad.
    • Najib is under pressure to deliver an emphatic win for the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, as he struggles to appease Malaysians unhappy with rising costs and a multi-billion dollar scandal at a state fund he founded.
    • The 64-year-old leader is expected to retain power due to a rift in opposition ranks between Mahathir`s bloc and the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party.
  7. US takes aim at Putin`s allies in Russia with new sanctions
    • The United States punished dozens of Russian oligarchs and government officials on April 6, 2018 with sanctions that took direct aim at President Vladimir Putin`s inner circle, as President Donald Trump`s administration tried to show he`s not afraid to take tough action against Moscow.
    • Seven Russian tycoons, including aluminium magnate Oleg Deripaska, were targeted, along with 17 officials and a dozen Russian companies, the Treasury Department said. Senior Trump administration officials cast it as part of a concerted, ongoing effort to push back on Putin, emphasisingthat since Trump took office last year, the US has punished 189 Russian-related people and entities with sanctions.
    • Rather than punishing Russia for one specific action, the new sanctions hit back at the Kremlin for its `ongoing and increasingly brazen pattern` of bad behaviour, said the officials. The officials ticked through a list of complaints about Russian actions overseas, including its annexation of Crimea, backing of separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, and cyberhacking.

  8. UK general lauds Pak fencing of Afghan border
    • Chief of General Staff (CGS) UK Army General Sir Nicholas Patrick Carter arrived on two-day official visit to Pakistan on April 6, 2018 and called on Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
    • Bilateral issues and regional security situation was discussed during the meeting, said a statement issued here by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
    • The UK CGS acknowledged positive results of Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism and recent measures taken along Pak-Afghan Border, including the fencing for improvement in border control.
  9. BD launches billion dollar `model` mosques to counter radicals
    • Bangladesh has launched a billion-dollar campaign to build hundreds of `model mosques`, partly with Saudi funding, to try to counter radical Islam in the Muslim-majority country.
    • Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who inaugurated work on nine mosques through a video conference on April 5, 2018, is also trying to bolster links with Muslim groups in an election year, according to analysts.
    • 560 `model mosques cum cultural centres` would be built in the next 30 months as part of a government attempt to fight extremism.
  10. Korea`s ex-president jailed for 24 years
    • South Korea`s disgraced former president Park Geun-hye was jailed for 24 years on Friday for corruption, completing a dramatic fall from grace for the country`s first woman leader who became a figure of public fury and ridicule.
    • A trial which lasted more than 10 months and highlighted shady links between big business and politics in South Korea ended with Park being found guilty on multiple criminal charges, including bribery andabuse of power.
    • Park`s successor described the sentencing as a `heartbreaking event` for both the nation and the ex-leader herself.
