  1. Afghan security team visits Pakistan for talks
    • Afghanistan`s top security officials on January 31, 2018 made an unannounced trip to Islamabad for talks with the Pakistani leadership on security cooperation amid the highly volatile security situation in their country
    • Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua will, meanwhile, lead a delegation to Kabul on Saturday (Feb 3) for bilateral talks
    • The visit by Afghan Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak and head of spy agency NationalDirectorate of Security Masoom Stanekzai was announced by the Foreign Office after the arrival of the high-level delegation.
    • They met Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi and other civilian and military leaders.
    • `Afghan government had requested that a high-level delegation comprising Interior Minister and NDS chief would like to visit Pakistan.
  2. Commanders authorised to deal with `safe havens` in Afghanistan, Pakistan: US
    • The Trump administration`s South Asia strategy gives US commanders in the region the authority and resources they need to deal with `terrorist safe havens in both Afghanistan and Pakistan
    • The strategy that PresidentDonald Trump announced in August last year underlines the US determination to defeat the Taliban in the battlefield in order to force them to accept the current administrative set-up in Kabul
    • As part of this strategy, the Trump administration recently increased drone strikes at alleged terrorist safe havens in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and reports from the region suggest that several `commanders`of the dreaded Haqqani network were also killed in those attacks.
  3. Super blue blood moon awes and wows
    • The moon put on a rare cosmic show on January 31, 2018: a red blue moon, super big and super bright.
    • It`s the first time in 35 years a blue moon has synced up with a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse, or blood moon because of its red hue
    • Hawaii and Alaska had the best seats, along with the Canadian Yukon, Australia and Asia. The western US also had good viewing, along with Russia.
  4. Cabinet extends stay of Afghan refugees for two months
    • Despite complaining that terrorists can easily mix in Afghan refugees camps, the government on January 31, 2018 decided to extend the stay of over 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan for another two months
    • The decision to give the sixth extension to Afghan refugees was made in the federal cabinet meeting, which was chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi
    • It was also agreed to extend the period for the proof of registration (PoR) cards for Afghan refugees living in Pakistan which automatically lost their legal status on Dec 31, 2017
  5. Taliban now active in ‘70pc of Afghanistan’
    • Taliban fighters, whom US-led forces spent billions of dollars trying to defeat, are now openly active in 70 percent of Afghanistan, a BBC study has found
    • Months of research across the country shows that the Taliban now control or threaten much more territory than when foreign combat troops left in 2014
    • The Afghan government though played down the report, saying it controls most areas.
    • Recent attacks claimed by Taliban and Islamic State group militants have killed scores in Kabul and elsewhere.
    • Afghan officials and US President Donald Trump have responded by ruling out any talks with the Taliban. Last year Mr Trump announced the US military would stay in the country indefinitely.
    • The BBC research also suggests that IS is more active in Afghanistan than ever before, although it remains far less powerful than the Taliban
  6. Australian govt`s `secret papers` found in junk shop
    • Hundreds of `top secret` and classified Australian government papers have been found in locked cabinets sold at a secondhand shop, national broadcaster ABC reported on January 31, 2018 as Canberra ordered anurgentprobe
    • The two filing cabinets were bought for `small change` from a store in the capital that sells off ex-government furniture,
    • They were unopened for several months until someone used a drill to get into thedrawers, finding a trove of documents detailing almost a decade of government workings
  7. US puts Hamas chief on terror blacklist
    • The United States on January 31, 2018 put the head of Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, Ismail Haniya, on its terror blacklist and slapped sanctions on him a move sure to raise tensions, after Washington recognized Jerusalem as Israel`s capital
    • The 55-year-old Haniya, who was named head of Hamas in May 2017, represents the more pragmatic wing of the movement, which said the US move would not deter the group`s `resistance
  8. Theresa May eyes `golden era` with China
    • Prime Minister Theresa May on January 31, 2018 forecast a `golden era` in Sino-British relations with deeper trade ties after Britain leaves the European Union, but her visit to China was dogged by Brexit rows at home
    • As she embarked on the three-day visit, May batted away critics of her leadership on Brexit and domestic issues, including within her Conservative party
  9. Separatists pin down Yemen govt
    • Yemeni ministers were holed up in Aden’s presidential palace after separatist forces seized effective control of the southern port city, dealing another blow to the country’s embattled government
    • The United Nations agency for humanitarian affairs reported a “cautious calm” in the city, but damage to aid distribution channels and donor nation confidence had already been inflicted
  10. Fakhar Ali Shah elected director of West Asia Baseball
    • The Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA) has elected president of its Pakistan chapter, Fakhar Ali Shah, as director of West Asia Baseball during its meeting held in Yilan, Taiwan on January 31, 2018
    • The seat fell vacant as a result of the sudden death of Khawar Shah, who was PFB president
