  1. US general rules out military operations inside Pakistan
    • A senior US general has assured Islamabad that the United States is not planning to conduct military operations inside Pakistan
    • Another general said that despite differences Pakistan remains `absolutely critical` to America`s success in Afghanistan, while the Pentagon`s chief spokesperson urged Islamabad to join US efforts to defeat terrorists in the South Asian region
    • The assurances followed a White House statement, saying that the US military had been given authority to eliminate militant safe havens in both Pakistan and Afghanistan
  2. Pakistan, WB sign loans worth $305m
    • Pakistan and the World Bank signed agreements worth $305 million on February 2, 2018 to support projects in the agriculture sector in Punjab and to improve the nutritional status of children and women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
    • The Strengthening Markets for Agriculture and Rural Transformation (SMART) in Punjab programme will get a loan of $300m
  3. JF-17 Thunder shoots down beyond visual target
    • The Pakistan Air Force on February 2, 2018 achieved another milestone when the indigenously produced JF-17 Thunder shot down a slow speed target with BVR (Beyond Visual Range) and IR (Infrared) missile with pinpoint accuracy at Sonmiani firing range.
    • The day marked a monumental episode in the glorious history of PAF as a state-of-the-art weapon test range has been made operational to track the complete trajectory of the aircraft and launch missiles.
  4. Pakistan calls for more democracy in an expanded UNSC
    • Pakistan strongly advocated the principles of democracy and equitable representation in the efforts to restructure the UN Security Council as the deadlocked talks aimed at improving the 15-member body’s ability to respond effectively to emerging challenges resumed
    • Progress towards restructuring the Security Council remains blocked as India, Brazil, Germany and Japan — known as the Group of Four — push for permanent seats in the Council, while the Italy/Pakistan-led Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group firmly opposes any additional permanent members.

    • Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on February 2, 2018 denotified PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi from Senate, following Supreme Court’s verdict of sentencing him to one month in prison.
    • The notification further supported the clauses with SC verdict and declared the seat from Punjab as vacant

    • China has asked Pakistan to undertake massive legal reforms immediately if it wants timely completion of projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
    • The Chinese reservations were communicated to Pakistani parliamentarians during an in-camera briefing by the newly appointed Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, Yao Jing, a key official revealed

  7. Fidel Castro`s eldest son commits suicide
    • The eldest son of late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, Fidel Castro DiazBalart, committed suicide on February 1, 2018 aged 68 after being treated for months for depression

    • Worried about militants sneaking into a restive Chinese region from wartorn Afghanistan, Beijing is in talks with Kabul over the construction of a military base
    • The army camp will be built in Afghanistan`s remote and mountainous Wakhan Corridor, where witnesses have reported seeing Chinese and Afghan troops on joint patrols

  9. ICC judges consider Afghan war crimes inquiry
    • Judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) are deciding whether to authorise an official war crimes inquiry into events in Afghanistan
    • They are due to begin examining written submissions from victims in Afghanistan about whom and what any potential investigation should focus on
    • In 2017, ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said there was a “reasonable basis to believe” war crimes had been committed. Possible perpetrators included the Taliban, CIA and Afghan forces
  10. FIFA trophy is coming to Lahore today (Feb 3)
    • FIFA trophy is coming to Lahore as part of a journey that sees it travel to 51 countries and 91 cities across six different continents.
    • The trophy, which will reach Lahore in a special chartered plane along with a host of superstars including legendary batsman Younus Khan, famous singers Quratulain Baloch and Momina Mustehsan and former French World Cup winner Christian Karembeu, will remain in the city for a day where it will be put on display for the public
