  1. Punjab cabinet approves major projects, draft laws
    • The Punjab cabinet which met after many months on Feb 6, 2018 approved the first mineral policy, allotment of Cholistan land and extending safe city project to three more districts -Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib
    • Chaired by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, it also gave its nod for a number of draft laws.
    • Under the Chief Minister`s Cholistan Package, it approved allotment of state land to landless people of Cholistan for agriculture purposes.
    • The cabinet also okayed launch of Safe City Project in Kasur in the first phase and in Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib in the second phase.
  2. Bill to end US aid to Pakistan moved in House of Representatives too
    • The US House of Representatives joined the Senate on February 6, 2018 in seeking to end US economic aid to Pakistan while the Trump administration has already suspended military aid.
    • A bill introduced in the House said that non-defence aid to Pakistan should also end and the money set aside for this purpose should be invested in infrastructure projects in the United States.
    • The movers say they are seeking the ban because Pakistan `provides military aid and intel-ligence` to terrorists, a charge Islamabad strongly denies.
    • Pakistani officials say that the US administration blames their country to hide their failure in Afghanistan where they have failed to subdue an ever-increasing insurgency.
  3. Journalist Siddique Baloch Passes Away
    • Veteran journalist Siddique Baloch, the editor of Quetta-based English daily Balochistan Express, and Azadi, an Urdu newspaper, passed away on February 6, 2018. He was 78.
    • Until the end of his life, Siddique Baloch was keen to write editorials for his newspa-pers. During a medical check-up on Monday night he asked his physician if a laptop could be arranged for him to keep himself engaged and kill boredom while lying on the bed.
  4. ADB climate change report paints apocalyptic scenario for Pakistan
    • It is anticipated that Pakistan`s greenhouse emissions will double in two years and surge 14 times by 2050 much higher than the world average. This will pose serious threats to the country`s population, as well as lower agricultural and energy outputs.
    • These dire warnings were a part of the Climate Change Profile of Pakistan, prepared by Dr Qamar Uz Zaman Chaudhry, an international climate technology expert and former director general of the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The report has been launched by the Asian Development Bank.
  5. Pakistan, China sign cultural agreement
    • Pakistan and China have signed Executive Programme of Cultural Agreement for further consolidating cultural relations and promoting people-to-people contacts between the two States.
    • Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting, National History and Literary Heritage, Marriyum Aurangzeb and Chinese Minister of Culture Luo Shugang signed the agreement on behalf of their respective countries.
  6. UN calls for Syria ceasefire as government air strikes kill 47
    • The United Nations called on February 6, 2018 for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Syria of at least a month, as heavy air strilkes were reported to have killed dozens of people in the last major rebel stronghold near Damascus.
    • Separately, UN war crimes experts said they were investigating several reports of bombs allegedly containing chlorine gas being used against civilians in the rebel-held towns of Sarageb in the north-western province of Idlib and Douma in the Eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus. The

  7. AJK Parliament declares Ahmadis as non-Muslims
    • The AJK Parliament February 6, 2018 unanimously passed Azad Jammu and Kashmir Interim Constitution (Twelfth Amendment) Bill, 2018, declaring Ahmadis as non-Muslims.
    • The joint session of both the houses of the AJK Parliament –Legislative Assembly (lower house) and AJK Council (upper house) – met with Speaker AJK LA Shah Gulam Qadir in the chair

  8. Maldives’ top judge arrested
    • The Maldives’ top judge was arrested as forces stormed the Supreme Court at dawn, after President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency in the islands.

    • Finally, the first Khyber Pakhtunkhwa deoxyribonucleic acid laboratory was formally inaugurated on Tuesday to provide services to the people.

  10. Erdogan warns US to quit Syria’s Manbij
  • President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on February 6, 2018 warned the United States to withdraw any American forces from the Syrian town of Manbij, vowing Turkish troops would expand a cross-border military operation to the key strategic hub.
  • Erdogan blamed Washington for the presence in Manbij of fighters from the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) and its Democratic Union Party (PYD) political wing, which Ankara sees as terror groups.
