  1. Commanders show readiness for cooperation with US
    • Military`s top brass on February 7, 2018 signalled cooperation with the United States and at the same time reassured the nation that there would be no compromise on national interest while doing so.
    • `National interest shall be kept at premium while cooperating with all other stakeholders for regional peace and stability,` the corps commanders resolved at their monthly meeting chaired by Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa at the General Headquarters.
    • The meeting reviewed the `geo-strategic and security environment` in the context of US policy towards the region.Tensions between Islamabad and Washington intensified after the announcement of the Trump administration`s strategy for South Asia and Afghanistan, which was very critical of Pakistan for its alleged inaction against terrorist sanctuaries used for sustaining the insur-gency in Afghanistan.
  2. Prime accused awarded death in Mashal case
    • An anti-terrorism court (ATC) convicted 31 of the 57 accused in the Mashal Khan lynching case on February 7, 2018, awarding death sentence to the prime accused, life imprisonment to five other convicts and three-year jail terms to 25 others.
    • However, the court acquitted 26 other accused as the prosecution failed to prove charges against them.
    • The court declared four absconding accused, including three prime suspects, as proclaimed offenders and issued perpetual arrest warrants against them.
    • Mashal Khan 23, a student of Mass Communication department at the Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan, was lynched on April 13 last year by a mob of students after word spread that he had displayed blasphemous content online.
  3. Justice Yawar Ali takes oath as CJ
    • Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali on Wednesday took oath as 46th chief justice of the Lahore High Court at a ceremony held at Governor House.
    • Governor Rafiq Rajwana administered oath to the new chief justice.
    • Later on arrival at the LHC, a guard of honour was presented to the chief justice by a smartly dressed police contingent.
    • Chief Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali was elevated to the bench as additional judge of the high court on Feb 19, 2010. He will retire on Oct 22, 2018. Before elevation to the bench, he had served as deputy attorney general for Pakistan and the additional advocate general for Punjab.
  4. Army to be compensated in F-12 for its pre-partition land
    • A longstanding land dispute between the army, Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation (FGEHF) was resolved during a meeting on February 7, 2018.
    • A high level meeting was held at the Ministry of Defence and was chaired by Defence Secretary Lt Gen Zamirul Hassan Shah.
    • It was decided that the CDA will allot 33 acres of land to the army in F-12 in lieu of the army`s land in G-13, which is being operated by the housing ministry. The CDA will be giving the army land in F-12/3 in place of its land in G-13.
  5. US names three Pakistanis as `terrorist facilitators`
    • The United States on February 7, 2018 named three Pakistanis as key `terrorist facilitators`, saying they worked closely with a well-known backer of Al Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Taliban known as Shaykh Aminullah
    • The US Treasury placed Rahman Zeb Faqir Muhammad, Hizb Ullah Astam Khan and Dilawar Khan Nadir Khan on its blacklist of `Specially Designated Global Terrorists,` in an effort to disrupt the group`s ability to obtain and distribute financing
  6. Pak-China industrial mobility initiative launched
    • Pak China joint chamber of commerce and industry successfully initiated “Pak China Inter Industrial Mobility Programme” with the collaboration of Ecommerce Gateway Pakistan, with a prime objective to mobilize the potential industries of both China and Pakistan through a series of trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, and symposiums.
    • A ceremony was held on February 7, 2018 at PCJCCI secretariat for the official commencement of this Programme.
  7. Jordan King visits Pakistan today (February 8, 2018)
    • Jordan King Abdullah II will visit Pakistan on the invitation of President Mamnoon Hussain today (February 8)
    • He will be leading a high-level delegation, including senior officials, said a foreign ministry statement.
    • During his stay in Islamabad, the King would hold talks with President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

    • The world’s most powerful rocket, SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, blasted off February 6, 2018 on its highly anticipated maiden test flight, carrying CEO Elon Musk’s cherry red Tesla Roadster toward an orbit near Mars.
    • Screams and cheers erupted at mission control in Cape Canaveral, Florida as the massive rocket fired its 27 engines and rumbled into the blue sky over the same Nasa launchpad that served as a base for the US missions to the Moon four decades ago.
    • Loaded with Musk’s red Tesla and a mannequin in a spacesuit, the monster rocket’s historic test voyage captured the world’s imagination.
  9. Abdul Hamid re-elected as president of Bangladesh
    • Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid has been re-elected for a second term.
    • “As no one else was running for the presidential position, the election commission is announcing M Abdul Hamid as the country’s next president,”
    • Earlier, the ruling Awami League (AL) nominated Abdul Hamid for his re-election as the country’s president. Subsequently, Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finalised the nomination in a meeting
  10. Air India allowed to use KSA airspace to fly to Israel
    • Saudi Arabia has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. However, a recent development from the middle eastern nation has come as a surprise
    • In what can be called Saudi Arabia’s growing proximity with Israel, the nation has granted Air India’s new flight line to Israel to traverse its airspace.
    • This is the first time Saudi Arabia is allowing flight line to use its airspace to travel to Israel.
