  1. US drone strike in Afghanistan kills four T TP men
    • Khalid Mehsud alias Khan Said Sajna, a US-designated global terrorist and deputy `commander` of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), was killed in a drone attack inside Afghanistan on February 9, 2018.
    • Sajna`s three accomplices also died in the attack.
    • It is worth mentioning that several local and foreign media outlets had reported that Sajna was killed in a US drone strike in Khost province of Afghanistan in November 2015.
  2. Senate body approves changes to transgender rights bill
    • A Senate committee on Friday approved proposed amendments to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2017, giving them the right to be recognised as they perceive themselves.
    • `This means under the proposed law they would not need to appear before a medical board to decide their gender,`
    • The bill provides protection to the members of transgender community and prohibits attack on their self-esteem and mistreatment,`
  3. Pakistan, Jordan agree to boost cooperation
    • Pakistan and Jordan agreed on February 9, 2018 to enhance cooperation in diverse areas, including education, culture, defence, and through people-to-people contacts and further discussions in this regard would take place during a meeting of the Pakistan-Jordan Joint Ministerial Commission in March
    • This was agreed during a two-day (Feb 8 to 9) visit of King Abdullah II of Jordan.
    • During the visit, the king met President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi.
  4. PAF chief awarded Saudi Medal of Excellence
    • Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force was awarded King Abdul Aziz Medal of Excellence in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
    • General Abdul Rahman Bin Saleh Al-Bunyan, Chief of General Staff Royal Saudi Armed Forces conferred the coveted award on the Air Chief in a grand investiture ceremony.
  5. IAF officer in `ISI honeytrap` arrested in Delhi
    • An Indian Air Force (IAF) officer has been arrested in Delhi on charges of espionage and passing on classified information to Pakistani intelligence.
    • Group Captain Arun Marwaha, 51, leaked information and documents to two Pakistani agents who chatted with him on social media pretending to be women.
    • The officer posted at the IAF headquarters in Delhi, is a para-jumping instructor and was in charge of training elite Garud commandos.
    • He has been charged under the Official Secrets Act and faces up to 14 years in jail.
  6. PIA gets capability to overhaul Boeing 777 APUs
    • PIA has achieved yet another milestone by achieving the capability to overhaul Boeing 777 APUs (Auxiliary Power Unit)
    • Addressing the inaugural ceremony in PIA Engineering, Sardar Mehtab said this achievement will save PIA millions of dollars which used to be spent earlier while getting it overhauled from abroad
  7. Communist alliance to form govt in Nepal
    • Nepal`s Communist parties will form the next government, the election commission confirmed on February 9, 2018 after releasing long-delayed election results months after polls billed as a turning point for the Himalayan nation roiled by decades of political instability.
    • The alliance of the largest Communist party and former Maoist rebels has secured a strong majority in both the directly elected lower house of parliament and the indirectly elected upper house, according to official results from the commission.
  8. N Korea confirms dismissal of top military general
    • North Korea state media on February 9, 2018 confirmed the sacking of the country’s military chief Hwang Pyong So, after Southern reports said he had been fired for corruption
    • The North’s KCNA news agency, reporting on a military parade in Pyongyang, introduced armed forces minister Kim Jong Gak as vice marshal and director of the military’s General Political Bureau – a post previously held by Hwang.
    • The General Political Bureau is the North’s most powerful military body, in charge of assigning officers to posts and keeping ideological control over its estimated 1.3 million troops.
  9. Human eggs grown to maturity in lab
    • Scientists have grown human egg cells to full maturity in the lab in a potential breakthrough for fertility treatment, they announced in a study published.
    • Researchers in New York and Edinburgh developed a new method to grow eggs from very early-stage cells obtained from ovary tissue,
    • The eggs were grown to the point at which they could be fertilised.
    • This had previously been achieved with mouse egg cells, while human eggs had been successfully cultivated starting from a much later stage of development.
  10. Pakistan`s first cycling academy inaugurated
    • The first cycling academy of Pakistan was launched at the historical Qayyum Sports Complex, Peshawar on February 9, 2018.
    • The academy was launched with the collaboration of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cycling Association and the Directorateof Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
    • KP director general sports Junaid Khan, formally inaugurated the academy which is the first of its kind in Pakistan
