  1. Pakistan bans groups on UNSC terror list
    • The federal government has amended the Anti-Terrorism Act and the president of Pakistan has issued an ordinance for this amendment.
    • The amendment has been brought to declare as terrorist the organisations that have been declared as such by the United Nations Security Council. Now the government will be able to take action against these organisations with this amendment.
    • After approval by the president, the Law Ministry has issued the ordinance which has added an article in the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. The ordinance was to be issued because the National Assembly and the Senate were not in session.
  2. Drone strike kills six Al Qaeda suspects in Yemen
    • A drone strike killed six suspected Al Qaeda militants in central Yemen on February 11, 2018.
    • The US military is the only force known to operate armed drones over Yemen.
    • `An unmanned drone likely American bombed the group`s vehicle in the area of Qayfa, where Al Qaeda is active.
  3. IMF chief warns of deeper poverty if jobs not created
    • IMF chief Christine Lagarde gave a clarion call for countries to create the required environment for job creation, warning that unemployment can trigger dangers of youth radicalisation and deeper poverty.
    • Asserting that memories of the 2008 financial crisis are “still alive and not gone away”, Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), underlined the need to learn lessons from the recent global shift towards protectionism.
  4. Pakistan-Canada talks to promote trade begin Feb 12, 2018 (today)
    • Trade talks between Pakistan and Canada will open in Ottawa on February 12, 2018 to promote bilateral trade to its true potential.
    • Commerce Minister Pervaiz Malik has arrived in Ottawa on the invitation of his Canadian counterpart Francois-Phillipe Champagne.
    • The current volume of bilateral trade increased by 133 per cent from Canadian $732 million in 2013 to $1.8 billion during the last year.
    • Both sides recognise that there exists a huge potential for enhanc-ing the bilateral trade.
  5. Veteran actor Qazi Wajid passed away on Feb 11, 2018
    • Born in 1944 in Gwalior, India, Qazi migrated to Pakistan with his family and settled in Karachi, where his father was allotted a quarter on Martin Road.
    • Qazi was one of the most senior actors of Pakistan who started his career from Radio Pakistan. He worked for radio for 25 years.
    • He started off his career in 1965 from a children’s programme in radio and had acted in more than 100 television plays.
    • The Government of Pakistan had honoured him with a Pride of Performance Award in 1988.
    • The actor gave stellar performance in many hit drama serials including Tanhaiyan, Dhop Kinare, Mehndi, Khuda ki Basti, Ankahi and many more.
  6. Asma Jahangir passes away
    • Asma Jahangir, an lawyer, human rights activist, passed away Lahore at the age of 66 on February 11, 2018
    • Born in 1952 and raised in Lahore, Ms Jahangir studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary before receiving her Bachelors` degree from Kinnaird College and doing L LB from the Punjab University in 1978. Ms Jahangir was called to the Lahore High Court in 1980 and to the Supreme Court in 1982
  7. Dubai opens world`s tallest hotel
    • Gulf metropolis Dubai, on its never-ending quest to break records, announced the opening of the `world`s new tallest hotel` on February 11, 2018, pipping another towering landmark in the city for the title.
    • The gleaming gold 75-storey Gevora Hotel stands 356 metres, or nearly a quader of a mile, tall. The new record-holder is within view of its predecessor, Dubai`s JW Mariott Marquis just one metre shoher.
    • Dubai is also home to the world`s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which pierces the city skyline at 828 metres (half a mile) high.
    • The city-state, one of seven sheikhdoms that make up the energy-rich United Arab Emirates, aims to attract 20 million visitors annually by 2020 when it hosts the global trade fair Expo 2020.

    • Pakistani IT Industry has repeatedly won international awards and recognition at international forums and become world’s largest and most reputable entities among its regular clients.
    • Pakistan has won GSMA Awards, Spectrum for Mobile Broadband (2015) and Government Leadership Award (2017).
    • Minister of State for IT, Anusha Rehman won the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union’s Gender Equality and mainstreaming (GEM-TECH) Award in December, 2015.
    • Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT) has also secured a seat in the Governing Council of Asia Pacific Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development under the UNESCAP.

    • Lahore Lions retained their 2nd Women Hockey Super League title after beating Peshawar Deers 1-0 in final here at the National Hockey Stadium on February 11, 2018.
    • The match became fully alive in the second quarter, where good up and down stuff ensued with fine moves from both the sides. Areeba Sarwar brilliantly dived to flick the ball into the net to score the only goal of the match.
