  1. COAS asks Kabul to reciprocate anti-terror moves
    • Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has reassured Kabul and Washington that Pakistan`s counter terrorism operations are targeting the elements that could be carrying out attacks in Afghanistan and called for a reciprocal action against the sanctuaries from where attacks against Pakistan are being directed.
    • Gen Bajwa was speaking at the `Chiefs of Defence Conference`, which was attended by US Central Command Commander Gen Joseph Votel, commander of Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan Gen John Nicholson, and the military chiefs of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
    • The conference was held in Kabul ahead of NATO defence ministers` meeting scheduled to be held on Feb 14 and 15
  2. Cabinet approves new rules to tighten noose around banned outfits
    • The federal cabinet on February 13, 2018 approved new rules to tighten the noose around banned outfits in the country and block their financial assistances.
    • `The cabinet accorded approval, in principle, to Anti-Terrorism (Freezing and Seizure) Rules, 2018,` said a cabinet decision shared with the media.
    • The decision was taken three days after President Mamnoon Hussain promulgated an ordinance that amended the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, with regard to proscription of terrorist individuals and organisations to include entities listed by the United Nations Security Council.
  3. US moves to put Pakistan on terror-financing watchlist
    • While the United States has put forward a motion to place Pakistan on a global terrorist-financing watchlist with Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the Pakistan government has started working with several member states in a bid to get the nomination withdrawn
    • Pakistan has been scrambling in recent months to avert being added to a list of countries deemed non-compliant with ter-rorist financing regulations by the FATF, a measure officials fear can hurt its economy.
    • A meeting of FATF member states is due to take place next week in Paris, where the organisation could adopt the motion on Pakistan.
  4. Senate body suggests pre-CSS exam screening
    • A Senate special committee on February 13, 2018 suggested a screening test for candidates wishing to appear in the competitive CSS examination.
    • The committee formed to examine the curriculum of different groups and the possibility of bringing about a qualitative change in the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) met with Senator Muzafar Hussain Shah in the chair.
    • The members discussed various issues and observed that there was a dire need for starting a screening test as the number of candidates appearing in the CSS exam had increased four to five times during the last a couple of decades.On the other hand, the size and capacity ofthe FPSC has not increased
  5. Cabinet okays signing of LNG import deals with Oman, Italy
    • The federal cabinet on February 13, 2018 gave approval for signing of intergovernmental agreements with Oman and Italy for import of liquefied natural gas to meet the future needs.
    • Held under the chair of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at the Prime Minister’s Office, the federal cabinet took a number of other decisions as well, with special direction to all concerned departments for making the New Islamabad International Airport operational at the earliest.
    • The federal cabinet gave approval for signing of intergovernmental agreement between the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division), Pakistan and the Ministry of Oil and Gas, Sultanate of Oman for supply of LNG and POL products on government-to-government basis.
  6. KP CM orders gas royalty restoration to Karak
    • Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has directed the relevant officials to restore of gas royalty of Karak district.
    • He directed for the smooth implementation of ongoing schemes in communication, irrigation, higher secondary education and other sectors.
  7. Military aid to Pakistan will help defeat IS, Al Qaeda: US
    • The Trump administration has asked Congress to approve $336 million of civil and military aid to Pakistan for the next fiscal year, arguing that the proposed military assistance will help defeat Al Qaeda and the militant Islamic State (IS) group.
    • The total request is $10 million less than the previous year and links the defence assistance to Islamabad`s action against alleged terror safe havens on its soil.
    • The budget not used in a given year, such as those for 2017 and 2018, can be carried forward to the next fiscal year, 2019, which begins on Oct 1.
  8. Moscow seeks $20m from Delhi to repair N-sub
    • Russian authorities have demanded over $20 million for rectifying the damage suffered by India`s nuclear submarine INS Chakra, which was drydocked last week, even as the government is seeking to fix responsibility for the accident
    • It quoted defence sources as saying that Russia has quoted $20 million for fixing the nuclear submarine`s front portion, which was damaged while the submarine was entering the harbour in Visakhapatnam.
    • The details of the accident emerged in public in early October last year
  9. Dutch FM resigns after lying about Putin meeting
    • New Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra resigned on February 13, 2018, after admitting he had lied about his presence at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
    • `I see no other option today than to hand in my resignation to his majesty the King,` a tearful Zijlstra told MPs in a hastily-called session of parliament.

    • The World Radio Day was observed on February 13 to acknowledge the role of Radio in awareness and ameliorating life of the masses.
    • The day was proclaimed by the United Nations Assembly in 2011.
