  1. Zainab’s killer handed four death sentences
    • An Anti-Terrorism Court Saturday announced four death sentences to a man for raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl, in a case that shook Pakistan and drew attention of the whole world
    • According to details of the punishment, the trial court awarded Imran death sentence along with fine of Rs1 million under Section 364-A and 376 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
    • He was given death sentence under Section 302-B PPC and Rs1 million under Section 544-A of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), as compensation to the legal heirs of the victim girl.
    • He was further awarded death sentence under Section 7 (a) Anti Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997, with fine of Rs1 million, life imprisonment with fine of Rs1 million under Section 377, and further 2-year imprisonment if he fails to pay fine.
  2. Pakistan key to Afghan peace: US
    • US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells has said that in order to ensure security in Afghanistan a negotiated political solution that includes Pakistan needs to be found.
    • In an interview with Afghanistan’s TOLO news, Wells said continued pressure on the Taliban and Pakistan was needed. “Ultimately the solution to Afghanistan’s security and stability will lie in a political resolution not only on the military battlefield.
  3. Pak, Saudi Naval exercise concludes
    • Exercise Naseem Al Bahr XI (NAB) between Pakistan Navy and Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) concluded in Saudi Arabian waters off Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
    • The exercise NAB comprised of practical demonstrations of Fast Boat Attacks, various formations, maneuvering drills, defence against asymmetric attacks using fast boats, helicopter landings, boarding operations, anti piracy and joint response to conventional threats at sea. Live Weapon Firing was also conducted in which PN and RSNF ships successfully engaged their respective targets. PN P3C & helicopters conducted joint operations with Saudi Air Force & RSNF Air Arm elements
  4. India, Iran to step up cooperation on Afghanistan
    • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani agreed to step up efforts to bring stability to war-ravaged Afghanistan.
    • Modi reiterated India’s commitment to help Afghanistan become “a peaceful, secure, permanent, prosperous and pluralistic country” after holding talks with Rouhani in New Delhi on the last day of his three-day visit.
  5. Indonesia inks $1.1b deal with Russia to buy 11 jets
    • Indonesia has inked a billion-dollar deal to buy 11 Sukhoi Su-35 jets from Russia
    • The contract, signed by both countries’ representatives in Jakarta, is worth a total $1.14 billion
    • Two units of Sukhoi jets will be delivered in August 2018. Another six jets would be delivered 18 months after the contract comes into effect, and the final three a further five months later
  6. Actor Munna Lahori passes away
    • Famous stage and television actor Munna Lahori, who became popular for his character Zakoota Jin in children comedy drama Ainak Wala Jin, died in Lahore on February 17, 2018. He was 68.
    • Munna Lahori’s real name was Matloob-ur-Rehman. He became popular after playing the role of Zakoota Jin in state run drama series for children ‘Ainak Wala Jin.’
    • One of Munna Lahori’s favourite dialogues in the ‘Ainak Wala Jin’ was ‘Mujhe Kaam Btao, Mein Kya Karoon, Mein Kisko Khaon’ made him very popular among children as well as elderly people
  7. Russians, Americans exchange barbs over interference in elections
    • Top Russian and American officials exchanged barbs on February 17, 2018 in Germany over the US indictment of 13 Russians accused of an elaborate plot to disrupt the 2016 presidential election.
    • R. McMaster, US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, said at the Munich Security Conference that the federal indictments showed the US was becoming “more and more adept at tracing the origins of this espionage and subversion.”
  8. India to get operational control of Iran`s Chabahar port
    • India and Iran on Saturday signed agreements, including Tehran leasing to New Delhi operational control of part of the Iranian east coast port of Chabahar for 18 months.
    • The $85 million project, just 90km from Gwadar port, creates a transit route between India, Iran and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
  9. Tushna wins ladies title in Cholistan Desert Rally
    • Pakistan`s top racing lady driver Tushna Patel won the ladies title in the 13th Cholistan Desert Jeep Rally on February 17, 2018.
    • Karachi-based Tushna, wife of leading driver Ronnie Patel, displayed her brilliant skills and control over the vehicle to lead the field.
    • She covered 90 kilometers distance in one hour and 44 minutes while Islamabad`s Asma Siddiqui secured second spot in ihr 52 minutes while Momal Khan was third.
  10. Federer, 36, becomes oldest number one
    • Roger Federer became the oldest world number one when the 20-time Grand Slam title winner reached the semi-finals of the Rotterdam Open.
    • The 36-year-old Swiss overcame an early setback to beat Robin Haase of the Netherlands 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and will replace old rival Rafael Nadal at the top of the rankings.
