  1. Pak N-programme peaceful and safe
    • Pakistan on February 21, 2018 said it had run a safe and secure, and peaceful nuclear programme for more than four decades.
    • Pakistan assured the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it was voluntarily implementing the Guideline and Code of Conduct on the Import and Export of Radioactive Sources.
    • In a statement, Foreign office spokesperson Dr Mohammed Faisal said: “Over the years, experts from Pakistan have also contributed to the work of the IAEA in the fields of nuclear safety and security.”
  2. Disqualified premier dethroned as party head
    • In a major setback for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the Supreme Court on February 21, 2018 barred disqualified prime minister Nawaz Sharif from heading his political party.
    • The verdict, which sent shudders through country’s political spine, also declared null and void all the decisions taken by Nawaz as party chief since his disqualification last year as parliament member – thereby throwing next month’s Senate elections too in doubt.
    • This came only a couple of days after the PML-N decided to confront an unsympathetic judiciary at the parliament and other forums, and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi led an attack on the judges in the National Assembly the same day.
  3. PM Abbasi to embark on two-country visit
    • Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi will leave for Turkmenistan and Afghanistan on February 22, 2018 to attend the groundbreaking ceremonies of Turkmenistan Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (Tapi) gas pipeline project in the two countries.
    • The pipeline will transport natural gas from Glkynysh gas field in Turkmenistan through Afghanistanto Pakistan and then to India.
    • Mr Abbasi will first visit Turkmenistan and then proceed to Afghanistan during the two-day visit
  4. Next 10 years crucial for Pakistan`s economy: WB
    • Next 10 years are crucial for Pakistan to set a higher growth trajectory, with challenges arising on the economic front, due to lack of political consensus, said the Country Director, World Bank, Patchamuthu Illangovan
    • Addressing participants of an economic conference, Illangovan pointed out that Pakistan`s economy is facing short-term issues in the wake of rising external account deficit.
  5. Rs297bn spent on war against terror in 10 years
    • The Senate was informed on February 21, 2018 that the government had spent Rs297.25 billion on the war against terrorism over the last 10 years, while it received from the United States a small fraction of around Rs12bn out of this hef ty amount during the same period.
    • Sharing the year and head-wise details of spending for the first time, the finance ministry said special allocation made to the army over and above the normal budget during the period stood at Rs152.925bn.
    • An amount of Rs19bn was spent on fencing and lighting of the country`s border with Afghanistan over the past two years
  6. Delhi`s `lost` Mughal garden reopens as public park
    • A once-forgotten Mughal garden in the heart of New Delhi reopened on February 21, 2018 after years of painstaking conservation work, creating a new public park in India`s sprawling and smog-choked capital.
    • The 90-acre garden was formally opened by the Aga Khan, whose Trust for Culture has helped recreate the classical garden and restore its crumbling 16th-century monuments.
    • Some of the ancient tombs it contains were close to ruin before conservation efforts began around a decade ago, but have now been given Unesco World Heritage status
  7. Evangelist Billy Graham dies at 99
    • US evangelist Billy Graham, who counselled presidents and preached to millions across the world from his native Nohh Carolina to communist North Korea during his 70 years in the pulpit, died on February 21, 2018 at the age of 99
    • According to his ministry, he preached Christianity to more people than anyone else in history, reaching hundreds of millions of people either in person or via TV and satellite links.
  8. Zagitova smashes record as Bjoergen makes history
    • Fifteen-year-old Alina Zagitova stole the show in figure skating on February 21, 2018 as American skier Lindsey Vonn took bronze in her final Olympic downhill and Norway`s Marit Bjoergen became the most successful athlete in Winter Games history.
    • Zagitova was breathtaking in the Russian dominated short programme, breaking the world record set just minutes earlier by her team-mate, 18-year-old Evgenia Medvedeva.
  9. Pak students clean sweep int’l convention in Oman
    • Pakistani students beat other participants from Malaysia, Oman, the Philippines and Thailand in a brilliant show of talent and sporting prowess at the Beaconhouse International Student Convention 2018 (BISC 2018)
    • The event was held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman.

  10. Transparency International sees graft fight at global standstill
    • Governments are not doing enough in the global fight against graft, anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI) said February 21, 2018 as it presented its annual corruption perceptions index
    • Many nations have made no progress at all over the past six years, the group found.
    • “More corruption correlates with less respect for civil liberties, for rule of law, for access to justice,”
    • “The index reflects the relation between transparency and democracy.” Over the past six years, some countries such as Senegal, Ivory Coast and Britain have bolstered efforts to battle corruption, TI found
