  1. Little change in Pakistan`s ranking in corruption index
    • The Corruption Perceptions Index 2017, released by the Transparency International, has placed Pakistan at the rank of 117 0ut of 180 countries, with no major change from 2016 when the country was ranked 116 out of 176 countries.
    • Pakistan`s score is 32 in 2017, showing no change from the previous year when the score was 32. The index ranks countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people and uses a scale of zero to 100, where zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.
    • The index released on February 21, 2018 by the Transparency International reveals some disturbing information despite attempts to combat corruption around the world, most countries are moving too slowlyin their efforts.
  2. Saudi Arabia to spend $64bn on entertainment industry in 10 years
    • Saudi Arabia announced plans on February 22, 2018 to spend billions on building new venues and flying in Western acts, in a total overhaul of its entertainment sector that would have been unthinkable not long ago.
    • Long known for its ultra-conservative mores, the kingdom has embarked on a wide-ranging programme of social and economic reforms driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

  1. Dutch parliament recognises 1915 Armenian massacre as genocide
    • The Dutch parliament on February 22, 2018 passed a motion recognising as genocide the massacre of as many as 1.5 million Armenians in 1915.
    • “The motion is accepted,” parliamentary speaker Khadija Arib announced after the lower house voted 142 to 3 in favour of the proposal “that parliament in no uncertain terms speak about the Armenian genocide”.
    • It also agreed to send a cabinet representative to Yerevan in April for the commemorations of the killings.

  3. Saudi Arabia stymies US at FATF
    • Saudi Arabia joined Turkey and China in a move to block a US-led attempt this week to place Pakistan on an international terror-financing watch list, according to officials involved in the process, in a rare disagreement between Riyadh and the Trump administration, reported Wall Street Journal on February 22, 2018.
    • Saudi Arabia’s move on behalf of Pakistan came just days after Islamabad said it would send more than 1,000 troops to the Gulf kingdom, which has expanded its military posture in the region since its 2015 intervention in Yemen’s civil war.
  4. NFC Award: Centre transfers Rs1094b to provinces
    • The federal government has transferred Rs1093.8 billion to four provinces under the National Finance Commission Award that enabled the federating units to present a surplus budget during the first half (July- December) of the current fiscal year.
    • The centre has so far transferred 45 percent of the total estimated amount of Rs2, 384.2 billion under the federal divisible pool.
    • In the first quarter, provinces were supposed to receive 50 percent (around Rs1192.1 billion) of the total estimated amount of Rs2, 384.2 billion, however, the government has transferred almost Rs100 billion less than the expected sum to the provinces despite healthy growth in tax collection.
  5. Russia tested ‘over 200 new weapons’ in Syria
    • Russia has tested over 200 new types of arms in Syria during its campaign in support of President Bashar al-Assad, as Moscow was accused of taking part in air strikes against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta.
    • “As we helped the brotherly Syrian people, we tested over 200 new types of weapons,” said Vladimir Shamanov, a former commander of Russia’s airborne troops who now serves as head of the Russian Duma’s defence committee.
  6. US president’s first year sparks surge in hate groups
    • The number of hate groups across the United States surged during the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, echoing his often incendiary stances on race, according to a new report.
    • The Southern Poverty Law Center’s annual survey of extremist groups said the number of hate groups and their chapters rose by four percent last year to 954, with Trump-inspired alt-right and white supremacist groups provoking a backlash from hardline African-American groups.
    • “President Trump’s first year in office proved to be just as racially divisive as his campaign – but even more consequential,” the SPLC said in it “The Year in Hate and Extremism” report.
  7. India plans six new 6,322MW projects on Chenab River
    • India has stepped up its water war against Pakistan and to this effect, New Dehli has strategised a plan to maximise the usage of Indus waters under which six new projects will not only to be built to generate 6,322MW electricity on the Chenab River but also have huge capacity to store water that is destined to reach low riparian country-Pakistan.
    • The six projects that are being planned to be constructed include Sawalkot (1,856MW), Kirthai-1 (390MW, Kirthai II (930MW), Pakal Dal (1,000MW), Kwar(540MW), Kiru (624MW) and Bursar (800MW) in the Chenab basin and Ujh project (212MW) in the Ravi basin.
  8. Greek parliament decides to probe politicians in ‘bribery case’
    • Greece’s parliament voted early on February 22, 2018 to set up a committee that will investigate politicians, including former prime ministers, over allegations of bribery by the Swiss drugmaker Novartis.
    • Court officials say staff at the firm are alleged to have bribed Greek doctors and politicians. Novartis has said that, if an investigation finds its managers acted unethically, it will take “fast and decisive action”.
