  1. Navy’s operational exercise Ribat-2018 starts
    • The Pakistan Navy’s operational exercise, Ribat-2018, kicked off in Karachi on February 24, 2018. Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Kaleem Shaukat was the chief guest of the opening ceremony.
    • RIBAT series of exercises are focused on validating PN war-fighting concepts under evolving multi-faceted threats ranging from conventional to sub-conventional warfare.
    • The exercise would also encompass joint operations of the PN with the Pakistan Air Force at extended ranges into the Arabian Sea.
  2. EU opens door for Balkan states, but hurdles remain
    • The European Union has offered some of the six Balkan states who hope to join the bloc the prospect of becoming new members by 2025, but warned them they still have many obstacles to overcome.
    • The European Commission`s road map for the region unveiled earlier this month said the countries must root out problems with corruption and the rule of law, and, especially, settle a series of simmering territorial disputes.
    • `The EU door is open to further accessions when, and only when, the individual countries have met the criteria,` the plan said
  3. Trump announces `heaviest ever` sanctions on North Korea
    • US President Donald Trump has rolled out fresh sanctions against North Korea linked shipping assets, hailing the package as the `heaviest sanctions ever` levied on the Pyongyang regime.
    • Trump used a speech to conservatives just outside Washington to step up his campaign of `maximum pressure` designed to force North Korea to roll back its weapons programs.
    • `We imposed today the heaviest sanctions ever imposed on a country before,` Trump claimed at the end of a lengthy campaign-style address.
  4. Ancient necropolis discovered in Egypt
    • Egypt`s Antiquities Ministry announced on February 24, 2018 the discovery of an ancient necropolis near the Nile Valley city of Minya, south of Cairo, the latest discovery in an area known to house ancient catacombs from the Pharaonic Late Period and the Ptolemaic dynasty.
    • The large cemetery is located north of Tuna al-Gabal area, a vast archaeological site on the edge of the western desert. It hosts a range of family tombs and graves.
  5. Riyadh hosts first international half-marathon
    • Rain-soaked Riyadh hosted its first international half-marathon on February 24, 2018 with a top prize of one million riyals ($267,000), as the conservative kingdom seeks to boost sports and entertainment in a far-reaching liberalisation drive.
    • Hundreds of male runners raced in three categories 21, eight and four kilometres in a contest that started and ended at the city`s King Saud University and was called the `Riyadh Marathon`.
  6. UAE passport holders to get visa free entry to 138 countries
    • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) passport holders get a visa free entry into 138 countries of the world as the UAE has moved up three places, standing at rank 22 in the list of the top 25 most powerful passports in the world.
    • UAE is the highest-ranking Arab country in the Gulf and in the Middle East and North African regions, in the Global Passport Power Index by Arton Capital.
    • The UAE passport holders get visa free entry into 138 countries – as compared to Singapore at 162. Singapore and South Korea are tied at the top spot.
  7. Bollywood’s first female superstar Sridevi passes away
    • Legendary Bollywood actress Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018 following cardiac arrest. She was 55.
    • Sridevi Kapoor, born on 13 August 1963 was an Indian film actress and film producer who also worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada films.
    • She was regarded as the First Female Superstar of Bollywood and one of the most popular actresses of Indian cinema.
    • 4In Bollywood, she made her debut as a lead actress in Solva Sawan (1978) and gained wide public attention with the movie Himmatwala (1983).
  8. More than 1 in 10 French women raped
    • More than one in ten French women have been raped at least once, according to a study on sexual violence published on February 24, 2018 as the global abuse scandal widens.
    • Twelve percent of the 2,167 women polled by the Fondation Jean Jaures think tank said they had suffered “sexual penetration with violence, constraint or surprise”, the legal definition of rape in France
  9. Estonia celebrates 100th anniversary
    • Estonia on February 24, 2018 celebrated 100 years since declaring independence with a military parade and other festivities in the Baltic state, which is now firmly ensconced in the West, though tensions remain with neighbour Russia.
    • Flag-waving Estonians watched the parade in capital Tallin, with about 11,000 soldiers and hundreds of vehicles from both the domestic army and other Nato countries taking part in a show of strength.

    • Second Suresh Darrshan of Malaysia lifted the Syed Tajammul Abbas ITF Pakistan World Junior Ranking Tennis Championship 2018 boys singles title by beating qualifier Cheng Wei-Chen (TPE) in a thrilling three straight set final on February 24, 2018.
