  1. New law to register Sikh marriages on the anvil
    • A new draft of law regulating the marriages of Sikh community in Punjab is being made to replace the one already introduced in the Punjab Assembly by Sikh MPA Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora.
    • The new law will actually replace the Anand Mangi Act, 1909 which had become almost irrelevant after the migration of Sikhs to India in 1947.
    • According to the draft bill, all marriages between Sikh persons, whether solemnised before or after this act, shall be registered with a union council. A duly completed and signed Sikh Marriage form shall be submitted to the marriage registrar and notified to the union council within 30 days of the date of marriage.
    • Each union council shall grant licence to one or more persons for the purposes of entering and registering Sikh marriages in the marriage registry.
  2. 65pc of measles cases in eastern Mediterranean region reported from Pakistan: WHO
    • Over 65pc of the total measles cases reported in the eastern Mediterranean region, consisting of 22 countries, were reported from Pakistan in 2017.
    • According to a World Health Organisation report, a total of 6,494 measles cases were reported in 2017, which is more than double those reportedin2016.
    • Health experts say the actual number of cases may be higher as many cases in Pakistan are not reported, mostly due to the weak surveillance system.
    • Measles are a contagious respiratory infection caused by a virus.
  3. Iraqi court sentences 16 women to death
    • An Iraqi court has sentenced 16 Turkish women to death by hanging for joining the militant Islamic State (IS) group, a judiciary spokesman said on February 25, 2018.
    • Iraq is conducting the trials of hundreds of foreign women who have been detained, with hundreds of their children, since August by Iraqi forces as the IS strongholds crumbled.
    • Thousands of foreigners have fought on behalf of IS in Iraq and Syria since at least 2014. Many foreign women came or were brought from overseas to join the militants.
  4. UN calls for 30-day immediate ceasefire across Syria
    • The UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution demanding a 30-day ceasefire across Syria `without delay` to deliver humanitarian aid to millions and evacuate the critically ill and wounded.
    • UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock welcomed the vote saying: `Words must now quickly become action any cessation of hostilities must be real.
    • Attacks must stop.` The vote was postponed for several days of lengthy and intense negotiations to try to get support from Russia, a key Syrian ally that said repeatedly an immediate ceasefire was unrealistic.
  5. Chabahar port not fully handed over to India: Iran
    • Iran has not fully handed over the Chabahar port to India and its doors are open for Pakistan, an Iranian official said.
    • Abbas Badrifar, press attaché at the Iranian embassy in Islamabad, told that Iran preferred Pakistan as a Muslim-majority nation in the region to the countries where the Muslims were in minority.
  6. First US Front-Line adviser troops arrive in Afghanistan
    • A new US Army unit created specifically to advise and assist conventional foreign military forces has begun deploying to Afghanistan.
    • The leadership of 1st Security Forces Assistance Brigade has arrived in Kabul and their troops will be dispersed at outposts throughout the country in order to be closer to the front lines of the war.
    • This is the first time in years that US troops will be on the frontline. Until now US troops have been advising high-ranking Afghan commanders but under US President Donald Trump’s new strategy, these troops will advise battalion-level personnel
  7. China’s Xi follows Putin in laying ground to rule for decades
    • China’s Communist Party is set to repeal presidential term limits in a move that would allow Xi Jinping to rule beyond 2023, completing the country’s move away from a political system based on collective leadership, reports Bloomberg.
    • The party’s Central Committee announced on Sunday that it was seeking to strike a constitutional provision barring the head of state from serving more than two consecutive terms. That would remove the only formal barrier to Xi, who is also party leader and commander-in-chief of the military, staying in power indefinitely
  8. North Korea says it is ready for talks with US
    • A North Korean envoy making a rare visit to South Korea said on February 25, 2018 that his country was willing to open talks with the United States, a rare step towards diplomacy between enemies after a year of North Korean missile and nuclear tests and direct threats of war from both Pyongyang and Washington.
    • Kim Yong Chol, who Seoul believes masterminded two attacks in 2010 that killed 50 South Koreans, was in South Korea for the end of the Olympics.
  9. Saudis get a taste of opera, jazz
    • Opera made its debut in Riyadh at the weekend with a classic Arabian love story, as bands from Beirut to New Orleans performed at the kingdom’s first-ever jazz festival. Long known for its ultra-conservative mores, the kingdom has embarked on a wide-ranging programme of social reforms that includes boosting sports and entertainment and allowing women to drive from June.
    • Music lovers had their first taste of jazz when a three-day festival opened on February 22, 2018 at the Riyadh Intercontinental hotel, showcasing performers such as regional darling Chady Nashef of Lebanon.

    • Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is going to be elected as an ‘interim/ acting’ president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the meeting of party’s Central Working Committee
