  1. Spat aside, US-Pakistan dialogue channels remain open
    • Pakistan and the United States are keeping channels of communication open in a bid to cool the row over terror sanctuaries that worsened with President Trump`s baffling New Year Day Twitter tirade
    • `The two sides continue to communicate with each other on various issues of mutual interest at different levels,` Foreign Office spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisalsaid
    • The US State Department had after President Trump`s tweet about getting nothing from Pakistan except `lies and deceit` despite paying $33 billion over the past 15 years suspended all military assistance for Pakistan. The freeze is likely to affect up to $900 million that Pakistan was to get this year from US in security aid
    • But, soon after the announcement of the aid suspension, US Defence Secretary James Mattis disclosed that the Centcom Commander, who oversees the war effort in Afghanistan, was talking to Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa.
  2. 30 percent surge in crimes against children in 2017
    • The data on the crimes committed against children in Punjab puts a big question mark on the performance of police in the largest province of the country
    • Over 750 cases were registered against suspects in 2017 for committing crimes against children, including girls and boys, mostly aged between 3 and 15 years
    • Most of such crimes were reported in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala,Kasur and Rawalpindi
    • However, during initial analysis, they found out that the crimes against children across the provinceregistered 30 percent surge in 2017 as compare to 2016
    • According to the report, total 6,793 children were kidnapped from various cities of the province during the last six years.The police high-ups claimed that the most of the cases of children`s abduction had been resolved
  3. China issues sweeping guidelines to push yuan for Belt and Road business
    • The People`s Bank of China (PBC) has announced a raft of new measures to push a greater cross-border role for the yuan that aim to `contribute to opening up on all fronts`
    • The measures go far beyond yuan settlement of cross-border trade. In a notice posted on its website, the PBC lists five seperate measures to be pursued. The list is reproduced below

    • Ecuador has granted citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after more than five years of living in asylum at the nation`s embassy in London
    • Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa said officials accepted Assange`s request for naturalisation in December, and they continue to look for a long-term resolution to a situation that has vexed officials since 2012
    • Ecuador gave Assange asylum after he sought refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden for investigation of sex-related claims
    • Sweden dropped the case, but Assange has remained in the embassy because he is still subject to arrest in Britain for jumping bail. He also fears a possible US extradition request based on his leaking of classified State Department documents
  5. European powers urge Trump to preserve Iran nuclear deal
    • Britain, France and Germany called on Donald Trump on January 11, 2018 to uphold a pact curbing Iran`s nuclear ambitions on the eve of a sanctions ruling by the US president they fear could torpedo an accord he has relentlessly criticised
    • Hailed by its admirers as key to stopping Iran from building a nuclear bomb, the deal lifted economic sanctions in exchange for Tehran limiting its nuclear programme. It was also signed by China, France, Russia, Britain, Germany and the European Union
    • The US Congress requires the president to periodically certify Iran`s compliance and issue a waiver to allow US sanctions to remain suspended.

    • Veterans Asim Qureshi and Shabnam Bilal recaptured men`s and women`s singles titles, both for an overall sixth time, in the 54th Jubilee Insurance National Table Tennis Championship which concluded at the Islamia Club`s Majeed Khan gymnasium on January 11, 2018
    • Experienced prevailed as top seed Asim prevailed over second seed and much younger Mohammad Rameez 11-9, 6-11, 5-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-7 in the best of seven final that fell short of expectations
    • The men`s singles title had fallen vacant after last year`s champion Saleem Abbas called it a day
  7. US House passes crucial spying law
    • The US House of Representatives passed a crucial surveillance law January 11, 2018 that reinforced the ability of the country’s spy agencies to intercept and make use of Americans’ private communications
    • The national security establishment saw the reauthorization of the expiring Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act as essential, warning that they would not be able to detect terror plots without it
  8. Israel approves over 1,100 new West Bank settlement homes
    • Israel has approved more than 1,100 new settlement homes in the occupied West Bank, the Peace Now NGO said January 11, 2018, the latest in a raft of such moves by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government
    • The approvals were given by a defence ministry committee with authority over settlement construction
  9. Pakistan’s GDP to remain at 5.5pc in current fiscal year: WB
    • While lowering down GDP growth projections, the World Bank (WB) has estimated that Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would touch 5.5 percent for the current fiscal year 2017-18 against officially envisaged target of 6 percent
    • According to WB’s report titled “Global Economic Prospects” for 2018 released stated that Pakistan’s GDP growth was projected to go up to 6 percent medium term by touching 5.8 percent by FY2019 and 6 percent by FY 2020
  10. PML-Q’s Bizenjo nominated as Balochistan chief minister
    • Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) members of provincial assembly jointly nominated former Balochistan Assembly’s deputy speaker Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo as the chief minister of the province.
    • Abdul Quddus would submit his nomination papers for the post of chief minister to the provincial assembly
