  1. US moots enhanced intelligence sharing with Pakistan
    • The United States on January 15, 2018 proposed enhanced intelligence cooperadon to Pakistan as their diplomats sat down in an effort to fix their frayed relationship
    • The two sides looked to be having a consensus on the need to work together for stabilising Afghanistan as US Acting Assistant Secretary of State Alice Wells opened her visit to Islamabad
    • The assistant secretary`s visit follows military-level contacts between the two countries for cooling the row. Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa was earlier contacted by Centcom Commander Gen Joseph Votel and a US senator
  2. 17m children are infected with worms: survey
    • An estimated 17 million children between the ages of five and 15 have Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH), according to the first STH survey, which was held in 40 districts across the country
    • The survey was conducted by the World Health Organisation, the Ministry of National Health Services, Indus Health Network and other organizations
    • The report, which was launched on January 15, 2018, suggests widespread de-worming in the country
    • The survey was conducted in five districts of Punjab, six of Sindh, 16 of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, one of Balochistan, five of Gilgit Baltistan, four in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and three agencies in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas
  3. Russian central bank, SBP sign MoU
    • The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral central banking cooperation with the Central Bank of the Russian Federation (CBRF)
    • SBP Governor Tariq Bajwa visited the CBRF headquarters in Moscow on Jan 15
    • This was the first-ever visit of an SBP governor to the CBRF. Mr Bajwa and CBRF Governor Elvira Nabiullina signed the document
  4. Sindh Assembly allows govt to delegate colonial-era powers to its officers
    • The Sindh Assembly on January 15, 2018 amended a colonial-era law to empower the provincial government, or its authorised officers, to exercise executive magistracy powers with regard to application of Section 144 of the criminal procedure code
    • The same powers were earlier exercised by district nazims under the now repealed Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001
  5. India and Israel sign nine agreements
    • Israel and India on January 15, 2018 signed nine agreements covering cooperation in cyber security, space and oil and gas exploration
    • Israel has given initial approval for Indian energy companies to explore oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean, in the first such move by Indian firms in that region.
    • Bilateral trade has jumped from $200 million in 1992, when the two countries opened diplomatic relations, to $4.16 billion in 2016, largely in favour of Israel
  6. UNSC team visits Kabul in solidarity move
    • Representatives of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), including US ambassador Nikki Haley, held talks with Afghanistan`s top leaders during a three-day visit to the war-torn country that ended on January 15, 2018
    • The 15-member council talks focused on political, security, socio-economic and human rights issues in Afghanistan. It was the first visit by the full council since 2010
  7. China deplores Indian army chief`s remarks
    • China has hit out at Indian Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat for calling Doklam a disputed territory
    • Gen Rawat suggested on January 13, 2018 that India needed to shift focus from its border with Pakistan to that of China and spoke of pressure being exerted by Beijing along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)
    • `Donglang is China`s territory. China will continue to exercise its sovereignty rights in accordance with the historical convention and steadfastly uphold its territorial sovereignty,` Mr Lu Kang said
  8. Turkey will destroy US-backed Syria ‘terror army’
    • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to destroy a planned US-backed 30,000-strong border security force in northern Syria, describing it as an “army of terror”
    • Turkey fears that the mooted new force will be comprised of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia, whom Ankara accuses of being terrorists and have been a constant bone of contention in Turkey-US ties
    • The new upsurge of tensions between Ankara and Washington also comes as Erdogan has repeatedly threatened that Turkey could launch a cross-border operation to oust the YPG from the Kurdish-held town of Afrin in northern Syria
  9. Sexual assaults in 2017 as compared with 2016
    • A total of 12,661 cases of raping girls, boys and women were reported during the period 2014-17 in Sindh, Punjab and KP
    • Sindh also recorded 38 per cent rise in sexual assault cases during 2015 when compared with 2014, while both Punjab and Sindh experienced 1 per cent increase during the same year. Punjab has the best system to compile record of crimes in the country
    • 237 rape cases were reported in Sindh during 2014 and 326 in 2015, meaning a 38 per cent increase. The figures in Punjab for the two years were 2,711 and 2,737 respectively, which means there was a 1 per cent increase in sexual assaults in 2015 against the previous year
    • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the other hand, recorded 136 cases in 2014 and 138 in 2015, again representing a 1 per cent increase. Similarly, Sindh witnessed 271 cases in 2016 against 326 in 2015, representing a 17 per cent decrease
  10. Army keep national basketball title
    • Army outclassed Wapda 71-45 in the National Basketball Championship final to retain the title on January 15, 2018
