  1. Pakistan condemns `unilateral` US drone strike
    • Pakistan on January 24m 2018 condemned a US drone strike deep inside its territory targeting an Afghan refugee camp and warned Washington that such `unilateral` steps would be detrimental to cooperation between the two countries in fight against terrorism
    • This was the first US drone strike inside Pakistani territory over the past 19 months
    • `Pakistan condemns a drone strike in Kurram Agency carried out by the Resolute Support Mission (RSM), which targeted an Afghan refugee camp,` the FO statement said

    • Balochistan`s new cabinet has decided to de-notify the status of Lehri as district and declare it a part of Sibi district
    • However, it was decided that Sohbatpur would retain its status as a separate district of Nasirabad division
    • The meeting also decided to induct 180 candidates into the education department, who had passed the NTS exam in 2015 but had been denied appointments by the previous government
    • `The cabinet has decided to accommodate all 180 successful candidates in the education department and will withdraw the petition pending in the apex court in this regard

    • Golen Gol Hydropower Project 108 Megawatt has started electricity generation January 24, 2018 as the first unit has started providing 36 MW power to Chitral
    • After two years of remaining in dark, due to destruction caused by flood and land sliding, Chital has finally got the much needed electricity.
    • The total requirement of Chitral is 11 MW and the project even in winter season, when water flows are its low, will be able to provide electricity to the area

    • It was achieved through a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which involves transferring the nucleus of a cell, which includes its DNA, into an egg which has had its nucleus removed
  8. US military has failed to tackle child abuse in Afghanistan
    • The US military has failed to tackle widespread sexual abuse of children by Afghan security forces it still funds and trains, says an official US report declassified on January 24, 2018
    • The report by a US government watchdog — Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) — also says that since 2002, the United States has appropriated more than $71.2 billion in assistance for the Afghan security forces
    • But the report pointed out that the US Secretary of Defence uses a not with standing clause to continue funding some implicated units in Afghanistan

  10. Pakistan, Indonesia set to sign amended PTA
    • Pakistan and Indonesia will sign amended preferential trade agreement (PTA) January 26, 2018 in Islamabad, which incorporated unilateral trade concessions granted by Indonesia on 20 items
    • The Indonesian government recently unilaterally agreed to provide Pakistani products with deeper market access under the PTA.
    • Both the countries would sign the unilateral concession granted by Indonesia during the visit of Indonesian President.
    • Major exports items from Pakistan would include tobacco, textile fabric, rice, ethanol, citrus (kinnow), woven fabric, and mangoes
