  1. Faith declaration must for govt jobs, rules IHC
    • The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on March 9, 2018 issued a short order on a peddon against an attempt to change the declaradon regarding knahty of Prophethood in the Elections Act 2017 and made declaration of faith mandatory before joining the judiciary, armed forces, civil services and other government jobs.

    • In the latest round of highlevel talks between the United States and Pakistan, both sides stressed the need for restarting the process for reconciliation in Afghanistan, Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua told.
    • Pakistan`s top diplomat, who completed her two-day visit to Washington on March 9, 2018, held two high-level meetings on March 8, 2018 afternoon at the White House and the State Department.
  3. India`s top court upholds passive euthanasia
    • Individuals have a right to die with dignity, India`s Supreme Court upheld on March 9, 2018 in a landmark verdict that permits the removal of life-support systems for the terminally ill or those in incurable comas.
    • Passive euthanasia, as it is called, will apply only to a terminally ill person with no hope of recovery, a panel of five judges said. Active euthanasia, by administering a lethal injection, continues to be illegal in India.
    • In active euthanasia, a specific overt act is performed to end the patient`s life whereas in passive euthanasia, something is not done that would be necessary to preserve a patient`s life, the panel noted.
  4. Mauritius president to resign over financial scandal claims
    • Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib Fakim is to resign after becoming embroiled in a financial scandal, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth announced on March 9, 2018.
    • Gurib-Fakim, who is the only female head of state in Africa, has been accused of using a bank card provided by an NGO to make personal purchases and will step down after ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of independence on March 12.

    • North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump plan to meet in May for nuclear disarmament talks, a whiplash development that would put two leaders who`ve repeatedly insulted, threatened and dismissed each other in the same room, possibly in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
    • It would have been an unthinkable suggestion just a few months ago, when the insults were at their peak Trump was a `senile dotard` and Kim was `Little Rocket Man` and the North was snapping off regular weapons tests in a dogged march toward its goal of a viable nuclear arsenal that can threaten the US mainland.
    • Liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who some believe has manoeuvred the two leaders to this position, reflected the hope and relief many here feel about the planned summit when he declared on Friday that it will be a `historical milestone` that will put the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula `really on track.
  6. Saudi prince ends UK visit with push for fighter deal
    • Britain has signed a multi-billion-pound preliminary order from Saudi Arabia for 48 Euro fighter Typhoon fighter jets, military equipment maker BAE Systems said on March 9, 2018.
    • The lucrative deal was unveiled on the third and final day of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman`s visit to Britain.
    • The order would help Riyadh modernise its armed forces under the kingdom`s `Vision 2030` economic plan, while no financial details were given.
    • Eurofighter was developed by a European consortium that also comprises Italy`s Finmeccanica and Franco-German civilian planemaker Airbus.

  8. US places head-money on top three Pak militant commanders
    • The expected improvement in relations between the United States and Pakistan could increase hardships of the Afghanistan-based Pakistani Taliban as the US Department of Justice placed head-money on top three Pakistani militant commanders.
    • The US placed head-money of $5 million on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) head Mullah Fazlullah and $30 million each on Abdul Wali aka Omar Khalid Khurasani and Mangal Bagh.
    • Also, the Pakistani Taliban on March 9, 2018 confirmed the loss of their 21 members in a rare US drone strike on their alleged training facility in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province near the border with Pakistan’s Mohmand Agency. Those killed in the missile strike included 16-year old Abdullah, the elder son of Mullah Fazlullah Khurasani.
  9. China rejects Sweden’s accusations over detained publisher
    • China on March 9, 2018 rejected “groundless” accusations by Sweden over detained book publisher Gui Minhai after Stockholm demanded medical access to the Swedish citizen.
    • Chinese-born Gui was arrested on a train to Beijing in January while travelling with two Swedish diplomats — the second time he has vanished into Chinese custody in murky circumstances.
  10. Britain First leaders jailed over anti-Muslim hate crimes
    • The leaders of the far-right group Britain First have been jailed for a series of hate crimes against Muslims.
    • The group’s leader, Paul Golding, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, while deputy, Jayda Fransen, was sentenced to 36 weeks. They had each been found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment at Folkestone magistrate’s court earlier the same day.
