  1. Direct talks with Taliban not possible, says US
    • A senior US diplomat has said that the United States cannot hold direct talks with the Taliban as it`s doing with North Korea because there`s no comparison between the two situations.
    • Instead, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice Wells urged the insurgents to talk to the Kabul government first if they want to join the reconcihad on process.
    • Sharing the details of her recent visit to Kabul at a Washington think-tank, Ms Wells also rejected another key Taliban demand, pulling out US troops from Afghanistan. The troops willstay for as long as it takes to stabilise the country, she added.
  2. Pak Navy flotilla arrives in Doha
    • A Pakistani flotilla comprising Pakistan Navy Ship HIMMAT and Pakistan Maritime Security Ship BASOL has arrived in Doha to participate in Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition (Dimdex-18).
    • The Pakistani flotilla was headed by Commodore Muhammad Faisal Abbasi who was the mission commander and was currently commanding the 25th destroyer squadron of the Pakistan Navy.
    • Both the ships are undertaking their maiden overseas deployments after induction in the Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA).
  3. 110,000 farmers to get smart phones
    • The Punjab government will give 110,000 smart phones to the farmers with an objective to keep them updated about agriculture department recommendations about their crops.
    • The farmers would get information regarding ecosystem, latest production techniques, subsidies on agriculture inputs, market prices of different commodities, and the latest researches.
    • The farmers will pay Rs500 to 1000 for acquiring one smart mobile phone.
  4. IAEA director general arrives in Pakistan on March 12, 2018
    • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General (DG) Yukiya Amano would arrive on a three-day official visit to Pakistan on March 12, 2018 (today).
    • During his stay, Yukiya Amano would visit various centres of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in Islamabad, Faisalabad and Karachi, besides calling on Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
    • As a founding member of IAEA, Pakistan has deep cooperation with IAEA in areas of nuclear power, industrial application of nuclear techniques, non-destructive testing, food and agriculture, soil improvement, radiation induced mutation, radiation oncology and nuclear medicines, environmental protection and isotope hydrology, etc.
  5. Russia test-fires `ideal hypersonic missile
    • Russia successfully launched a hypersonic missile which President Vladimir Putin called `an ideal weapon` as he unveiled a new array of next-generation arms earlier this month.
    • The high-precision Kinzhal (Dagger) missile was launched from a MiG-31 supersonic interceptor jet that took off from an airfield in the South Military District in Russia`s southwest, the defence ministry said.
    • `The launch went according to plan, the hypersonic missile hit its target,` the ministry added.The ministry released video footage showing two pilots gearing up for a flight and then running towards a jet with a large missile slung beneath its underbelly. Set to rousing, patriotic music, the video then shows a missile detaching from the airborne plane and gliding across the dark sky, leaving a fiery trail behind.
  6. Saudi king establishes anti-graft prosecution units
    • Saudi King Salman has ordered specialised anti-corruption units to be established in the public prosecutor`s office, several weeks after a sweeping anti-graft purge of the kingdom`s elite.
    • The move was intended to `increase effectiveness` and accelerate the process of combating corruption, Attorney General Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb was quoted
    • The statement did not offer any specific details on the operation of the units except that they will investigate and prosecute corruption cases.
  7. Chinese parliament allows Xi to remain president indefinitely
    • China removed presidential term limits from its constitution on March 11, 2018, giving President Xi Jinping the right to remain in office indefinitely, and confirming his status as the country`s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong died more than 40 years ago.
    • China`s ruling Communist Party announced the proposed amendment only last month and there was never any doubt it would pass as parliament is full of loyal party members.
    • The amendments include inserting Xi`s political theory into the constitution, something that was already added to the party charter in October at the end of a party congress, a feat no other leader since Mao had managed while in office.
  8. Iranian foreign minister to hold talks with civilian, military leaders
    • Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif arrived on March 11, 2018 on an official visit.
    • He is leading a high-level delegation that includes a large group of businessmen.
    • During his stay in Islamabad, the foreign minister is scheduled to meet Pakistan`s civilian and military leadership.
    • He will also deliver a lecture on 70 years of Pak-Iran ties at the Institute of Strategic Studies.
    • The Iranian minister would review issues of mutual interest with a special focus on expansion of economic and trade relations betweenthe two neighbours.
  9. Bezos displaces Gates to become nchest person on earth
    • Jeff Bezosis officially the richest person on the planet thanks to the success of Amazon but his bold vision extends to space and even time itself.
    • With Amazon`s share price up nearly 60 per cent during the past year, the personal wealth of the company`s 54-year-old founder has doubled to more than $110 billion.
    • Bezos leapt past Bill Gates this week to the top spot on an annual Forbes magazine list of billionaires, relegating the Microsoft co-founder to second place with a net worth of about $90 billion.
    • He has gone on record with a formula for success that includes taking bold bets, riding change and rebounding from setbacks.
  10. `WI to play three T20s in Karachi next month`
    • The cricket-starved people of Karachi will shortly relish watching international stars at the National Stadium after Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi announced on March 11, 2018 the West Indies have agreed to play three T20s at the start of April.
    • Sethi delivered the good news for Karachiites during the handover ceremony of the HBL Pakistan Super League trophy at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, while saying it took hectic efforts to convince the top brass of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
