  1. The first-ever Sadiq Sanjrani, Senate chairman from Balochistan elected
    • In a historic election, the first-ever Senate chairman from Balochistan was elected with the support of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), independent candidates from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and some other opposition parties as the candidate backed by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) faced an extraordinary defeat on March 12, 2018.
    • Sadiq Sanjrani, an independent senator from Balochistan secured 57 votes, defeating the PML-Nbacked candidate Raja Zafarul Haq who could bag only 46 votes in the election for the office ofSenate chairman.
    • The post of deputy chairman of the upper house of parliament was won by Saleem Mandviwalla of the PPP who received 54 votes beating his opponent Usman Kakar of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, a PML-N ally, who secured only 44 votes.
    • All 103 members of the house, except Mr Dar, exercised their right to vote for the election of Senate chairman; the five members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, however, did not vote for the election of deputy chairman.
  2. Iran invites Pakistan to participate in Chahbahar project
    • Iranian Foreign Minister Dr Javad Zarif on March 13, 2018 invited Pakistan to participate in Chahbahar seaport project and development of its link with Gwadar Port as he sought to allay concerns here over Indian involvement in the Iranian port.
    • `We offered to participate in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). We have also of fered Pakistan and China to participate in Chahbahar,` Dr Zarif, who is on a three-day visit to Pakistan, said.
  3. Punjab bans dance at schools
    • The Punjab School Education Department (PSED) has placed a ban on dance performances by students in all government and private schools in the province, on March 12, 2018.
    • The ban extends to performances on occasions of prize distribution, parents’ day, teachers’ day and other events.
  4. Cell phones, jeans banned for Punjab teachers
    • Authorities have imposed a ban on teachers wearing jeans and using mobile phones in classrooms across Punjab.
    • The District Education Authority has issued new rules and regulations for school heads and staff.
    • It has been made mandatory for Grade IV employees to wear black dress on duty. Every classroom must have a dust bin.
    • Moreover, schoolteachers won’t be allowed to write a letter to any authority. Teachers will be allowed to go to pilgrimage only during holidays. School heads not complying with these rules and regulations will face strict action.
    • Also, the education authority has said no child will sit on the ground. The school head cannot suspend a grade four employee
  5. Ishrat Husain`s book launched
    • The Consortium for Development Policy Research (CDPR) launched Dr Ishrat Husain`s new book Governing the Ungovernable, inviting the economists and professionals to share their views here on March 12, 2018.
    • The book is a response to the long-standing national confusion as to why Pakistan did not graduate to join the ranks of countries such as China and Vietnam, given that it was economically ahead of them till 1990.
    • It examines the reasons behind this slowdown, the volatile and inequitable growth of the last 25 years and through a process of theoretical and empirical evidence argues that the most powerful explanatory hypothesis lies in the decay of institutions of governance.
    • Dr Ishrat Husain is former governorof the State Bank of Pakistan
  6. PAF chief awarded US Legion of Merit
    • Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman has been awarded with the United States Legion of Merit, the highest military award of the US armed forces awarded to any foreign military official.
    • The award was presented by Commander of the US Air Forces Central Command Lt Gen Jeffrey L. Harrigian on behalf of US Air Force Chief of the Staff Gen David L. Goldfein at a ceremony held at the Pakistan Air Force headquarters on March 12, 2018.
    • The award has been conferred on the air chief in recognition of his brave leadership, sagacity, vision, demonstration of superb resolve and unwavering dedication to the global war on terrorism and above all extraordinary efforts to ensure regional as well as global peace and stability.
    • The award is also an acknowledgment of his personal efforts, which enhanced mutual cooperation and relations between the two air forces.
  7. US renews GSP scheme for Pakistan
    • The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to renew the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) scheme allowing duty free access for goods from 120 countries including Pakistan for the next three years.
    • The scheme expired on December 31, 2017. The Bill now provides an extension up to December 2020.
    • This was the first hurdle in the renewal of the package. Now, the bill will be presented in the US Senatefor a passage. After the passage of the bill, US president Donald Trump will sign it into a law.
  8. Taliban take key Afghan district
    • The Taliban captured a district in western Afghanistan as security continued to deteriorate in the war-ravaged state, on March 12, 2018.
    • The fall of the district, Anardarah district in Farah province, came days after Afghan security forces suffered heavy casualties in another district in the same province.
    • Farah is a strategically important province, as it borders Iran and is linked to the country`s lucrative drug routes.
  9. China’s Xi calls for military loyalty to new constitution
    • A day after he won the mandate to rule for life, President Xi Jinping called on China’s military to follow the country’s newly-amended constitution in which his political thought is now enshrined.
    • “The whole army must strengthen its constitutional awareness, promote the constitutional spirit and be a loyal admirer, conscientious follower and staunch defender of the constitution,” Xi told military officials on March 12, 2018.
  10. Indian forces kill three youth in IHK
    • Indian troops killed three Kashmiri youths, including at least two engineering students, in held Kashmir’s Islamabad district on March 12, 2018, triggering widespread protests in the region, according to local and international media reports.
    • Indian forces conducted a pre-dawn raid on a cluster of homes in a village in Anantnag on a tip that militants were hiding there and came under fire from them, police said.
