1. Top security body unveils plan for fight against virus

• Fortnight closure of borders with Iran, Afghanistan from 16th, International flight operations restricted to three airports, All educational institutions shut till April 5, Ministry of food security asked for contingency plan, Not a national emergency, says aide
• The National Security Committee (NSC) on March 13, 2020 unveiled a national strategy for curbing the spread of novel coronavirus in Pakistan by restricting points of entry into the country and banning public gatherings.
• A national coordination committee was set up to liaise between the stakeholders over the efforts aimed at halting the spread of COVID-19.
• Pakistan, which reported its first confirmed case on Feb 26, currently has 28 patients of the disease. International experience shows that the disease spreads fast and a herculean effort is needed for containing it.
• The NSC, which is the highest forum for coordination on security issues, at its first-ever meeting on a health crisis decided to seal borders with Iran and Afghanistan, restrict international operations of airlines to three airports, shut down educational institutions, cinemas, theaters, and marriage halls, and advised adjournment of civil cases in courts and change in hearing procedures for criminal cases. There were indications that March 23 Pakistan Day parade too was being cancelled. However, a formal announcement in that regard would be made by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media affairs wing of the military.

2. 36 brigadiers promoted to major general

• The Pakistan Army Promotion Board on March 14, 2020 promoted 36 brigadiers to the rank of major general.
• A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the board held at the General Headquarters. The meeting was presided by Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, says a press release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
• Around 25 brigadiers promoted to higher rank belonged to various corps whereas 11 brigadiers were from the Army Medical Corps.

3. Europe is now epicentre of coronavirus, says WHO

• Countries across the globe went on heightened virus alert on March 13, 2020, sealing borders and cancelling cultural and sporting events in a frenzied bid to slow the ballooning pandemic.
• Financial markets endured a rollercoaster ride after a week of spectacular losses triggered by fears the out-break will lead to a worldwide economic recession.
• The death toll jumped over 5,000 on Friday as the total number of cases topped 135,000, according to a tally based on official sources.
• World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared that Europe was now the epicentre of COVID-19, describing the death toll as a `tragic milestone

4. Religious services curbed across ME over virus fears

• Religious authorities cancelled or limited weekly prayer gatherings across the Middle East on March 13, 2020 to help prevent the spread of the new coronavirus as they encouraged the faithful to pray for those afflicted by the global pandemic.
• Iran, which is mired in the worst outbreak in the region, meanwhile announced another 85 deaths, pushing its total number of fatalities to 514 amid 11,364 confirmed cases. The real number of cases might be even higher, as questions have been raised about authorities` transparency. Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders in Jerusalem said services would continue to be held in the Holy Land but moved to limit indoor gatherings after the Israeli Health Ministry said they should not exceed 100 people

5. Trump declares emergency to cope with coronavirus pandemic

• US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on March 13, 2020 to combine America`s public and private resources to fight coronavirus and also launched a new Google site to screen millions of Americans.
• `To unleash full potential of the federal government, I am officially declaring a national emergency two very big words,` he said. `The action I am taking will open up access to up to $50 billion of very important…and a large amount of money for states, territories and localities.
• Mr Trump brought CEOs of America`s largest companies and pharmaceuticals to this live news conference at the White House Rose Garden and made them pledge to work together to defeat this deadly disease

6. Turkey, Russia agree on joint patrols in Syria

• Turkey and Russia have agreed on the details of a ceasefire in Syria`s Idlib region after four days of talks in Ankara, Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on March 13, 2020, adding that joint patrols along a key highway will begin on Sunday as planned.
• Turkey and Russia, which back opposing sides in Syria`s war, agreed on March 5 to halt hostilities in the country`s northwest after a recent escalation of violence displaced nearly a million people and brought the two sides close to confrontation.
• Under the agreement, Turkish and Russian forces will carry out joint patrols along the M4 highway linking Syria`s east and west, and establish a security corridor on either side of it. A Russian delegation arrived in Ankara on Tuesday to work out details

7. US judge orders WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning released from prison

• Former US Army soldier and WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning was released from prison on March 13, 2020 on a judge’s order after being held since May for refusing to testify in an ongoing US investigation of WikiLeaks.
• US District Court Judge Anthony Trenga in Alexandria, Virginia, ordered Manning released because the grand jury hearing the case had concluded.
• Alexandria City Sheriff Dana Lawhorne told reporters late that Manning had been released from the Alexandria Detention Centre.

8. India sets free veteran Kashmiri politician Abdullah

• Indian authorities on March 13, 2020 released an influential Kashmiri lawmaker who had been held for seven months after New Delhi stripped India-held Jammu and Kashmir of its semi-autonomy and detained thousands of politicians and activists.
• Farooq Abdullah, 82, had been confined to his residence in Srinagar since August 5 when the Indian government split the state and put it under direct New Delhi rule.
• An official order said the government was revoking Abdullah`s detention `with immediate effect`, without giving a reason

9. Sultans shatter Zalmis` hopes with nail-biting win

• While Karachi`s National Stadium wore a deserted look during the HBL Pakistan Super League match on March 13, 2020, Peshawar Zalmi`s hopes of making through to the semi-finals hung in the balance after suffering a heartbreaking loss by three runs against leaders Multan Sultans.
• Match No 27 was played behind closed doors in front of empty stands at the 34,000-capacity venue _ hardly an inspiration for players to showcase their prowess. The lack of buzz that the spectators would have provided was tragically missing and the 8pm start added to the gloomy settings.
• But there was nothing pessimistic for Multan Sultans, who successfully defended a modest total of 154-5 before securing their sixth victory in nine games, while also guaranteeing themselves a top-spot finish

10. Premier League, CL matches suspended

• England`s Premier League became the latest high profile competition to announce a suspension as the chaos stemming from the coronavirus outbreak continues to impact football.
• On another frenetic day of sporting turmoil the announcement that England`s top flight league would be halted came shortly after the sport`s European governing body UEFA announced that all next week`s Champions League and Europa League games had been postponed.
• England`s Premier League, the richest football league in the world, had stood almost alone in not suspending the season, but at an emergency meeting it was decided that the fixtures would stop until April 4 at the earliest. The Football League and Women`s Super League are also suspended until April 3 while England`s friendly internationals against Italy and Denmark have been postponed
