- Ziaratwal made opposition leader in Balochistan PA
- Balochistan Assembly Speaker Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani has appointed Abdul Rahim Ziaratwal of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) as new leader of the opposition in the assembly with immediate effect.
- Mr Ziaratwal will replace Maulana Abdul Wasey of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) who had been holding the office since 2013.
- However, Engineer Zamarak Khan Piralizai will continue to work as the deputy opposition leader.
- Rauf Ata appointed Balochistan Accountant General
- Senior lawyer Rauf Ata has been appointed Advocate General for Balochistan on March 15, 2018.
- Mr Ata will replace Amanullah Kanrani who tendered his resignation to the Balochistan governor two days ago.
- Mr Ata has taken over as the new advocate general and started his work.
- US hits Russians with sanctions for election meddling, cyber attacks
- The United States slapped sanctions on 19 Russian individuals and five groups, including Moscow`s intelligence services, for meddling in the 2016 US election and malicious cyber attacks.
- Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said there would be additional sanctions against Russian government officials and oligarchs `for their destabilising activities.
- Mnuchin did not give a time frame for those sanctions, which he said would sever the individuals` access to the US financial system.
- Indonesia makes criticising politicians a crime
- Indonesians could be jailed for criticising national politicians under a new law which came into force on Thursday, in what critics slammed as a major step back for the world’s third-biggest democracy.
- The vaguely worded bill passed the 560-member house last month but has just become official, over the objections of President Joko Widodo who refused to sign off on the controversial legislation.
- Widodo does not have veto power over the bill, although it can be challenged at the Constitutional Court.
- Pakistan’s first immunology lab opened at SIUT
- Country’s first clinical transplant immunology laboratory aimed at bringing advancement in the field of transplant sciences was inaugurated at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on March 15, 2018.
- Prof Medhat Askar who is an internationally acclaimed transplant immunologist inaugurated the newly established laboratory. Which will focus on the subject of tissue typing, detection of antibodies, transplant of highly sensitized incompatible transplants thereby helping those patients whose transplant is often not possible?
- KP, Swiss govts sign MoU: Buddha statue to be displayed in Switzerland
- The biggest Buddha statue in the Peshawar Museum would be displayed at the Rietberg Museum Zurich in Switzerland at an exhibition to promote religious tourism.
- Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the officials of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism and Museums Department and the Switzerland government, the Buddha would be transported to Switzerland where it will be showcased at the Rietberg Museum Zurich to promote religious tourism.
- Chinese firms ink 41 CPEC-linked accords in 2018
- Chinese companies have signed 41 different understandings for major undertakings related to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) during 2018.
- “Under these accords, Chinese firms will invest in energy, Gwadar port, road infrastructure, industrial development, etc,” Lee Xia Oxian, chairman Association of Chinese Enterprises in Pakistan, said at Pakistan China Construction Conference, organised by Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD).
- “The CPEC is not only important for Pakistan and China but it also holds equal importance for other regional countries.”
- Car costs make Singapore world’s priciest city
- The eye-watering cost of owning a car in space-starved Singapore means the city state is the world´s most expensive place to live, for the fifth year in a row, a survey said March 15, 2018.
- The Asian financial hub — where owning a no-frills sedan can set you back US$76,000 — beat global capitals to the dubious title, despite stiff competition from resurgent European cities.
- Pricey perennials Tokyo and New York did not even make the top 10 in the annual list by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), beaten out by Paris, Zurich (joint second) Hong Kong (fourth) and Oslo (fifth).
- Seoul and Geneva shared sixth place, while Copenhagen, Tel Aviv and Sydney rounded out the rankings
- Sindh Games rescheduled, now from April 18
- The 17th Sindh Games have been rescheduled due to the Pakistan Super League final and the Pakistan-West Indies Twenty20 Series in the city.
- The Games would now be held from April 18 to 21 at Karachi. The Games had been originally scheduled from March 28-31.The source said that school examinations were another reason behind the rescheduling of the competitions
- Mahira bags award at UK Asian Film Fest
