  1. PM, Pence review Afghan peace push amid signs of thaw
    • Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had an unscheduled meeting with US Vice President Michael Pence here on March 16, 2018 and their talks focused on finding a negotiated settlement to the conflictinAfghanistan.
    • The 30-minute, one-on-one meeting took place at the vice president`s residence at the US Naval Observatory, which is close to the Pakistan Embassy in Washington.
    • The meeting was held on Pakistan`s request.
    • Michael Cutrone, special adviser to Vice President Pence for South Asian Affairs, attended the meeting as a note-taker. No US or Pakistani of ficial accompanied the two leaders at this meeting.
  2. Mujahid Anwar named PAF chief
    • Air Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan was on March 16, 2018 designated as the new chief of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and he will assume command on March 19 (Monday).
    • Air Marshal Khan will succeed Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, who is retiring from service after completing his tenure.
    • The new air chief was earlier posted as deputy chief of air staff. He also held the critical assignment of director general of Air Force Strategic Command at the Air Headquarters.
    • With his appointment as the next PAF chief, he has superseded Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Farooq Habib, who was senior to him.
  3. Janjua to hold talks in Kabul on March 17, 2018
    • National Security Adviser retired Lt Gen Nasser Janjua will arrive in Kabul on Saturday (March 17, 2018) on a daylong visit.
    • During his visit, the adviser would hold meetings with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, his counterpart Haneef Atmar and chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Masoom Stanekzai.
    • Gen Janjua has been invited by Mr Atmar
  4. Pakistan pulls out of WTO summit in India
    • Pakistan March 16, 2018 pulled out of the World Trade Organisation Summit in India as tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours touched new heights.
    • Diplomatic sources said that “nobody will attend the WTO meeting” in Delhi from Islamabad. “We have conveyed this decision to India. We cannot send our commerce minister to India when they are harassing our diplomats,” a senior government official told The Nation.
  5. Private sector gets 10 hydropower projects
    • The Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation`s board of directors was informed on March 16, 2018 that the provincial government had approved the award of 10 hydropower projects of 338 megawatts to the private sector.
    • A statement issued here said the hydropower projects would bring several million dollars worth of investment to the province.
  6. Seven US personnel killed in Iraq helicopter crash
    • All seven service members aboard a US helicopter that crashed in Iraq were killed on March 16, 2018. The aircraft crashed in western Iraq
    • The officials said seven service members were on board.
    • The crash did not appear to be the result of enemy activity and is under investigation, the Pentagon said.
  7. African, EU states focus anti-trafficking efforts at source
    • Thirteen African and European countries and the EU agreed on March 16, 2018 that efforts to crack down on migrant trafficking to Europe should also focus on economic woes that prompt poor Africans to seek a better life in Europe.
    • In ministerial-level talks, they agreed to `attack underlying causes of irregular migration,` according to a joint statement.
    • The economic problem… is also the basis for the migration phenomenon
  8. Iraqi teenager found guilty of carrying out London train bombing
    • An Iraqi teenager, who had come to Britain as an asylum seeker, was found guilty on Friday of attempted murder after detonating a homemade bomb on a packed rush-hour London commuter train, injuring 30 people, prosecutors and police said.
    • Ahmed Hassan, 18, was found guilty of trying to murder the passengers on board anunderground train heading to central London on Sept15 last year, prosecutors said.
    • The bomb went off at Parsons Green station and flames engulfed the carriage, but it did not fully explode, limiting the scale of injuries in what authorities said was Britain`s fifth major attack of 2017.
  9. Belgium takes back control of Brussels Grand Mosque from Saudi govt
    • Belgium is taking back control of the Grand Mosque of Brussels by terminating Saudi Arabia`s lease of the building with immediate effect over concerns it promotes radicalism, the government said on March 16, 2018.
    • The announcement is Belgium`s first official confirmation of the move which comes after months of behind the scenes diplomacy to prevent any fall-out with Saudi Arabia, as reported in February.
    • Concerns over Brussels` biggest mosque, located nearthe European Union`s headquarters, surfaced after Islamist militants who plotted their assault in Brussels killed 130 people in Paris in 2015, and 32 in the Belgian capital in 2016.
  10. Indian singer Daleer Mehndi convicted of human smuggling
    • A court in Patiala convicted on March 16, 2018 pop singer Daler Mehndi and sentenced him to two years in prison for his involvement in a human trafficking case dating back to 2003.
    • The Punjabi singer was however granted bail.
    • DalerMehndi, his brother Shamsher and others had been accused of illegally sending people abroad by disguising them as members of his troupe.
