  1. Mahmud Sipra passes away
    • Film-maker and businessman Mahmud Sipra passed away in Dubai on March 1, 2018. He was 75.
    • Sipra was born in Ranchi, India, into a family of distinguished professionals.
    • Sipra started his career in Karachi with Sasa Advertising and won an award for a cigarette campaign. He produced some other exceptional works and also worked as a TV English newscaster in Karachi.

    • White House communications director Hope Hicks, one of President Donald Trump`s most trusted and longestserving aides, abruptly announced her resignation, leaving a void around a president who values loyalty and affirmation.
    • The departure of Hicks, who worked as a one-woman communications shop during his campaign, came as a surprise to most in the White House and cast a pall over the West Wing at a trying time for the president.
  4. Saudi Arabia begins issuing cinema licences
    • Saudi Arabia began issuing licences on March 1, 2018 to operate cinemas in the kingdom ahead of their reopening after a decades-long ban was lifted as part of a far-reaching liberalisation drive.
    • The move is another step towards opening the Saudi market to regional and international theatre chains, which have long eyed the kingdom as the Middle East’s last untapped mass market.
  5. China offers help in Afghan peace process
    • Welcoming Afghan President Ashraf Ghani`s offer of talks with the Taliban, a Chinese foreign ministry`s spokesperson said on March 1, 2018 that China was willing to assist the Afghan reconciliation process.
    • President Ghani of fered recognition of the Taliban as a legitimate political group as part of a proposed political process that he said could lead to talks aimed at ending more than 16 years of war.
  6. US Olympic chief resigns
    • S Olympic Committee chief executive Scott Blackmun is resigning for medical reasons, following months of sustained criticism stemming from the sex abuse scandal involving former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
    • The USOC cited in a statement Blackmun`s `ongoing health issues` related to prostate cancer, for which he has been receiving treatment. It also outlined in the same media release new reforms aimed at protecting its athletes from abuse.
  7. Putin unveils ‘invincible’ nuclear weapons
    • President Putin launched what appeared to be the start of a new arms race with Washington, as he boasted of a new generation of “invincible” Russian weapons developed in response to the threat posed by the US. Putin praised Russia’s new hypersonic missiles and cutting-edge submarines during a state of the nation address that also touched on economic and social policies.
  8. Poland, Israel in talks to resolve Holocaust row
    • Senior Polish and Israeli diplomats met in Occupied Al-Quds on March 1, 2018 in a bid to resolve differences over a controversial Holocaust law passed in Poland that has raised concerns in the Jewish state.
    • Deputy foreign minister Bartosz Cichocki led the Polish delegation, while Israeli foreign ministry director general Yuval Rotem headed his country’s team. “We must make sure that historical truths are preserved and that there is no restriction on freedom of research and speech,” Rotem told journalists before the start of the meeting.
  9. PML-N’s Dr Asad elected as senator from Punjab with 298 votes
    • Dr Asad Ashraf, supported by the ruling PML-N, won the by-election for a Senate seat vacated from Punjab after disqualification of Nehal Hashmi by a sweeping margin of 260 votes.
    • According to unofficial results, a total of 350 votes were casted out of which Dr Asad got 298 votes against 38 of his rival PTI candidate Dr Zarqa Taimur. The ECP declared 12 votes invalid while two votes were cancelled. Out of the cancelled votes one was cancelled when Malik Muhammad Waheed MPA from PP-146 was found guilty of exploiting secrecy of ballot when he showed his marked ballot to Punjab Minister Food Bilal Yasin. The second vote was cancelled because it had been torn/ damaged
  10. All TL 2017 issued
    • The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on March issued the first Active Taxpayers List (ATL) for the tax year 2017, showing an increase of 25 percent in the number of income tax return filers to around 1.26 million as compared to 1.01 million in the first ATL issued a year ago.
    • The revenue board issues new ATL every year on March 1 and updates it on a weekly basis by including the names of the taxpayers, who filed their returns during the week.
    • In the last weekly ATL-2016, issued on February 26, the total number of return filers reached 1.42 million, which means around 410,000 returns were filed after the issuance of the ATL, making it 40 percent of the total return filers.
