  1. Pakistan human development report to be launched next month
    • After three years of delay, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is set to launch the Pakistan National Human Development Report (PKNHDR) next month, sources confirmed to Dawn on March 19, 2018.
    • The Human Development Report gives the overview of human development in the country which is also coherent to the true economic development that cannot be measured by GDP.
    • According to the UNDP, `This approach is more about expanding the standard of human life, as compared to old approaches to development that concentrated on improving the standard of economy only.
    • The project started in November 2014 and was initially announced to be launched in 2015, however, it had faced a long delay due to incompetency and management crisis in UNDP.
  2. 5bn people may face water shortage by 2050: UN
    • Governments should focus on `greener` policies to improve the supply and quality of water as climate change and a growing global population threaten the water security of billions, the United Nations said on March 19, 2018.
    • In its 2018 World Water Development Report, the UN calculated that an estimated 3.6 billion people nearly half the global population live in areas where water can be scarce at least one month per year.
    • And this number could rise to 5.7 billion by 2050, the report warned

    • China on March 19, 2018 elevated the status of its current foreign minister and selected a new defence minister as the country deals with rocky relations with the United States and expands its military.
    • The rubber-stamp National People’s Congress endorsed the appointment of Foreign Minister Wang Yi, 64, as state councillor, making him a ranking member of the country’s “cabinet”.
    • He replaces Yang Jiechi, China’s former top diplomat, who was tipped for a leading role in managing Beijing’s increasingly uncertain relations with the US under President Donald Trump.

    • President Vladimir Putin said on March 19, 2018 that Russia would cut its military spending, a day after he won a presidential election with a landslide.

    • Juan Martin Del Potro, once one of tennis’ hottest young talents before his career was derailed by injuries, won the Indian Wells Masters on Sunday two years after almost quitting in frustration.
    • Del Potro upset world No 1 Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 7-6 (7/2) in championship match on March 19, 2018.
    • World number eight Del Potro is back in the top ten rankings this season for the first time since 2014. He dropped to No. 1,045 before beginning his comeback from the left wrist surgeries in 2016.
