  1. Pakistan, Russia concerned over growing IS threat
    • Pakistan and Russia have expressed `grave concern` over growing threat of the militant Islamic State (IS) group in the region.
    • The concern was expressed at the seventh meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism held here on March 21, 2018.
    • Noting their `grave concern`, the two sides observed that `the returning IS fighters from the conflictzones to countries of origin or third countries constitute a major security threat to various parts of the world, including this region`.
    • They emphasised the need for regional cooperation to counter the threat.
  2. KP cabinet okays timescale promotion formula
    • The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on March 21, 2018 approved the timescale formula, which will facilitate the promotion of 55,092 teachers working in BPS-14 and aboveintheErstphase.
    • The formula will be applicable to the teachers having eight years of service in the current grade, an official statement said.
    • The statement added that the cabinet also approved the school-based recruitment of teachers.
    • The cabinet, whose meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, approved the re-constitutionof the Textbook Board by amending its rules to broaden its scope.
  3. Tear gas used in Kosovo parliament to delay vote
    • Kosovo`s opposition on March 21, 2018 held up ratification of a border agreement with Montenegro, which they regard as a sell-out, releasing tear gas at a parliamentary session called to push the deal through.
    • Approving the 2015 border deal is a key condition for Kosovo to gain visa-free travel to the European Union, but the opposition party Vetevendosje is adamantly against it, claiming it will wrongly surrender some 20,000 acres of Kosovan territory to its neighbour.
    • Opposition lawmakers threw tear gas canisters into the chamber to block discussion and a vote, causing deputies to withdraw choking and spluttering.
  4. Three-way summit with N. Korea, US possible: Moon
    • South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on March 21, 2018 a three-way summit with North Korea and the United States is possible and that talks should aim for an end to the nuclear threat on the Korean peninsula.
    • Moon is planning a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next month after a flurry of diplomatic activity in Asia, Europe and the United States. US President Donald Trump has also said he would meet Kim by the end of May.
    • `A North Korea-US summit would be a historic event in itself following an inter-Korean summit,` Moon said at the presidential Blue House in Seoul after a preparatory meeting for the inter-Korean summit.
  5. Israel owns up 2007 attack on Syrian N-reactor
    • Israel admitted for the first time on March 21, 2018 it was responsible for a top-secret 2007 air raid against a suspected Syrian nuclear reactor, a strike the intelligence minister claims serves as a warning to Iran.
    • Israel has long been assumed to have carried out the raid and had been named by other countries as being behind it, but it had never formally acknowledged the strike or divulged details.
    • The admission along with the release of newly declassified material related to the raid comes as Israel intensifies its warnings over the presence of its main enemy Iran in neighbouring Syria.
  6. US to join trilateral security forum in Middle East
    • The United States, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are launching a trilateral security forum to counter Iran`s growing influence in the greater Middle Eastern region.
    • In a joint statement issued on March 21, 2018, US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also blamed Iran for assisting the Houthi militia in Yemen and the American leader vowed to back the Saudi position in this dispute
  7. France unveils on-spot fines for sexual harassment
    • France announced a series of measures against sexual violence on March 21, 2018, including on-the-spot fines for sexual harassment on the street and extended deadlines for filing rape complaints.
    • President Emmanuel Macron has said the bill is meant to ensure “women are not afraid to be outside”, after a wave of sexual assault allegations levelled against men in the public eye around the world triggered a protest movement online.
    • Under the legislation, which still needs to be approved by parliament, under-age victims of rape will have until they are aged 48 to file a complaint, taking the deadline to 30 years after they turn 18, from 20 now.
  8. Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar says only state can declare jihad
    • Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar University in Egypt Dr Shawki Ibrahim said on March 21, 2018 that only courts could declare a person infidel while the state was the only authority to declare jihad.
    • Endorsing the Paigham-i-Pakistan, a document issued by the government which offers a unanimous counter narrative to extremist ideas by collating fatwas (edicts) against terrorism, he said extremism leading to terrorism, blasphemy and declaring any Muslim a nonbeliever were prohibited in Islam.
  9. Punjab women clinch softball title in Inter-Provincial Games
    • Punjab women overpowered their counterparts from KPK in the summit clash by nine runs in the softball event of Inter-Provincial Games on March 21, 2018 to win the title at Mardan Sports Complex.
    • Punjab team played first in the final and scored 18 runs.
    • In reply, KPK team scored only nine runs.
  10. Saudis revamp school curriculum to combat Muslim Brotherhood
    • Saudi Arabia is seeking to purge its school curriculum of any influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and dismiss employees who sympathise with the banned group.
    • The government will “fight extremist ideologies by reviewing school curricula and books to ensure they are free of the banned Muslim Brotherhood’s agenda”, Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Issa said
