  1. Sherry Rehman becomes first woman opposition leader in Senate
    • Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on March 22, 2018 notified Sherry Rehman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as the leader of opposition in the upper house of parliament, making her the first woman to get the office in the 45-year history of the Senate.
    • Ms Rehman has replaced her party colleague Aitzaz Ahsan, who retired after completion of his six year term as senator on March 11.
    • Former PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto had the distinction of becoming the first woman prime minister in the Muslim world and she also served as the first woman opposition leader in the National Assembly in the 1990s.
  2. NA body approves evening courts for Islamabad
    • A proposed law to establish evening courts in the capital was approved by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice on March 22, 2018.
    • After approving the bill, the committee decided to send the bill back to the lower house. It is expected that the bill will also be passed smoothly in the Senate, as no one opposed it in the standing committee.
    • Once passed by both houses of parliament the National Assembly and Senate the law would make Islamabad the first city in Pakistan to operate evening courts.
  3. Peshawar police launch mobile app service
    • The city police on March 22, 2018 launched Android app to improve its service delivery with the help of modern technology.
    • The app is available at the Google Play Store and can be downloaded on Android phones.
    • The aim of introducing this app was to improve the public service delivery with the help of technology. The system could ensure immediate access to the police in case of any emergency.
  4. Famed Iranian philosopher Shayegan dies at 83
    • Famed Iranian philosopher Dariush Shayegan, who challenged Western domination of philosophical thought and wrote the book `Cultural Schizophrenia` on the Muslim world and modernity, died on March 22, 2018. He was 83.
    • Despite having fled Iran following its 1979 Islamic Revolution, Shayegan had returned in recent years to live out his final days at home.
  5. Trump slaps China with tariffs on up to $60b in imports
    • President Donald Trump on March 22, 2018 hit China with tariffs on up to $60 billion of imports to retaliate against the “theft” of American intellectual property, ratcheting up trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
    • Saying it would be the “first of many” trade actions, Trump signed the order that also could result in restrictions on Chinese investment in the US.
    • The move sent stocks diving amid rising market fears the United States could provoke a trade war, since China has vowed to retaliate.
  6. Pakistan gets missile tracking system from China
    • China has sold Pakistan a powerful optical tracking and measurement system that could speed up the development of multi-warhead missiles by Islamabad.
    • Chinese authorities declassified information about the deal through a statement on the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) website. The statement, evidence that Beijing is supporting Islamabad’s rapidly developing missile programme, said China is the first country to export such sensitive equipment to Pakistan.
  7. CPEC to help Pakistan boost economy: Report
    • With investments in roads, railways and ports, the $60billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) offers enormous potential for Pakistan to boost its economy, reduce poverty and ensure benefits to those likely to be affected by the new trade route, a new report says.
    • The report, entitled “The Web of Transport Corridors in South Asia”, published by the Asian Development Bank, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and the World Bank, discusses several economic corridors including CPEC.
  8. Sarkozy charged with corruption over Kadhafi financing
    • French ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy blasted what he said was a lack of evidence for corruption charges against him over claims the late Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi funded his 2007 election campaign.
    • The day after he was charged in France’s most explosive political scandals in decades, the 63-year-old right winger said in the statement published by the Figaro newspaper that he had been in “living hell” since the allegations emerged in 2011.
  9. Ex-S Korean president Lee held over corruption
    • Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak was on March 22, 2018 arrested over corruption, the last of the country’s four living ex-leaders to be embroiled in a criminal inquiry.
    • The 76-year-old, business CEO-turned president – who served from 2008 to 2013 – faces multiple charges including bribery, power abuse, embezzlement, and tax evasion.
    • He is the fourth surviving former South Korean leader to be detained over corruption. Live TV footages showed Lee, wearing a dark coat with a tie, emerge from his house, shake hands with his former aides and get into a car with darkened windows. Afterwards, the car and a convoy led by police motorbikes were seen entering the Seoul Eastern Detention Centre
  10. In first, Air India crosses Saudi airspace to Israel
    • Air India launched on March 22, 2018 the first scheduled service to Israel to be allowed to cross Saudi airspace, a sign of a behind-the-scenes improvement in ties between the Arab kingdom and the Jewish state.
    • The inaugural flight took off from New Delhi at 1230 GMT and was to land in Tel Aviv at 1945 GMT.
