  1. Spy row aggravates as US, EU expel over 100 Russian diplomats
    • The United States, Canada and 16 European countries announced the expulsion of over 100 Russian diplomats on March 26, 2018 in an expression of solidarity with Britain over a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in England earlier this month.
    • The coordinated announcements meant that the expulsion would be the biggest such move by the West against Moscow since the height of the Cold War.
    • In Washington, the White House said it would expel 60 Russians, joining governments across Europe in punishing the Kremlin for the Salisbury attack that they have blamed on Moscow.
    • It was the strongest action that US President Donald Trump had taken against Russia since comingto office. He has been criticised by Democrats and members of his own Republican Party for failing to be tough enough on Russia over allegations that it had meddled in the US electoral system, including the 2016 presidential campaign.
  2. Arshad Malik named vice chief of air staff
    • Air Marshal Arshad Malik was named as the vice chief of air staff (VCAS) on March 26, 2018.
    • The new VCAS was earlier posted as deputy chief of air staff (personnel). His predecessor in VCAS`office Air Marshal Farooq Habib was superseded during the appointment of the air chief.
    • Air Marshal Malik, 56, was commissioned in the PAF as a fighter pilot in 1983. He has flown various trainer and fighter aircraft, including Mirage, F-6, F-7P, and F-7PG
    • The new VCAS has commanded a fighter squadron, a flying wing, an operational air base and a regional air command.
  3. Founder of Russia`s notorious MMM Ponzi scheme dies
    • Sergei Mavrodi, an eccentric Russian mathematician who founded the notorious MMM pyramid or Ponzi scheme in the early 1990s that swindled millions out of their savings, has died on March 26, 2018.
    • Mavrodi, whose bespectacled face once featured on vouchers issued by the grandiose scheme, died at age 62, his assistant Alexander Vlasov told Moskva news agency.
    • The fraudster was found unconscious at a public transport stop, Interfax news agency reported, citing a source.
  4. Yemeni rebels launch missile attack on Riyadh as war enters fourth year
    • The Houthi movement that controls northern Yemen vowed on March 26, 2018 to fire more missiles into Saudi Arabia unless it stops bombing the country, after missiles crashed into Riyadh overnight causing casualties in the Saudi capital for the first time.
    • The incident threatens to sharply escalate the war, which entered its fourth year on March 26, 2018 and has already unleashed what the United Nations considers the world`s most urgent humanitarian crisis. Millions of people live under threat of mass starvation and disease, at the mercy of combatants who have shut food and medical supplies in the past.
    • Saudi forces said they shot down three missiles over Riyadh shortly before midnight. Debris fell on a home in the capital, killing an Egyptian resident and wounding two other Egyptians.
  5. Gen Bajwa meets Sultan of Brunei
    • The army chief met Sultan of Brunei, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. He also met Deputy Defence Minister Maj-Gen Dato Paduka, during an official visit.
    • Brunei’s leadership acknowledged Pakistan’s achievements in the fight against terrorism and its efforts for regional peace.
  6. 147 dual national babus dug out
    • The Supreme Court March 26, 2018 issued notices to 147 government servants in Grade-17 and above for concealing their dual nationality.
    • The notices were issued by a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar that heard the suo motu case regarding the dual nationality of officers working in federal and provincial governments, after Federal Investigation Agency Director General Bashir Memon submitted a report on the nationality of bureaucrats.
    • The apex court, in its previous order, had ruled that legal action would be taken against the officers who were concealing their dual nationality despite the court orders to disclose their status.
  7. Erdogan insists Turkey wants EU membership
    • President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on March 26, 2018 insisted Turkey still wanted to become a member of the European Union ahead of a potentially stormy summit with EU chiefs seeking to repair an increasingly fractured relationship.
    • European Union President Donald Tusk and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker will talk with Erdogan at the Bulgarian Black Sea resort of Varna with a litany of problems clouding their discussions.
    • Topic expected to be high on the agenda include the crackdown in Turkey after July 2016’s failed coup, Ankara’s demands for visa liberalisation and the near-endless saga of the country’s own EU membership bid.
  8. UAE completes first nuclear power plant of Arab world
    • The United Arab Emirates said March 26, 2018 that one of four nuclear reactors at its debut plant has been completed as it moves closer to becoming the first Arab nation to produce atomic power.
    • The announcement came after visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed toured the $20-billion Barakah plant, the state-run WAM news agency reported. The plant west of Abu Dhabi is being constructed by a consortium led by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
    • Sheikh Mohammed described the achievement as “historical” for the energy sector of UAE, which is rich in oil and gas but is looking to increase other sources of power
  9. ECP removes Sattar as chief of MQM-P
    • The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on March 26, 2018 removed Dr Farooq Sattar from the position of Muttahida Qaumi MovementPakistan (MQM-P) convener by accepting the challenge to his election and rejected his plea that the ECP had no jurisdiction to adjudicate upon internal matters of the party.
    • A five-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza, annulled the intra-party elections of the MQM-P held under Dr Sattar`s leadership that he claimed to have won with a huge margin.
  10. 64 dead in Russian shopping mall inferno
    • A total of 64 people, many of them children, perished in a fire that ravaged a busy shopping mall in an industrial city in Siberia, officials said Monday as rescuers searched through piles of charred rubble to recover bodies.
    • Russian television showed images of thick black smoke pouring out of the roof of the Winter Cherry shopping centre in the city of Kemerovo, which also houses a sauna, a bowling alley and a multiplex cinema and was packed with people on Sunday afternoon.
    • Emergency services minister Vladimir Puchkov said on Russian television: “We have recorded that unfortunately as a result of the accident 64 people died.” He said this was the “final figure”, and included six people still buried under the rubble.
