  1. First time in Punjab, Brain tumour removed with patient awake
    • For the first time in Punjab, the brain tumour of a patient was removed while he was conscious, at the Lahore General Hospital on March 28, 2018.
    • Punjab Institute of Neuro Sciences Unit II surgeon Prof Khalid Mahmood along with Dr Aneela Darbar, Dr Tariq Imtiaz, Dr Nabeel Chaudhry and Dr Muhammad Akmal performed the surgical procedure that was screened live to participants of a workshop held at the institute in connection with the ongoing seventh Saarc Neurosurgical Conference.
    • A tailor by profession, 28-year-old Mohammad Hassan had started complaining of severe headache and a pain in his body around two years ago. He was shifted to the General Hospital on March 22 where Prof Mahmood decided to perform this new surgical procedure on him.
  2. Supreme Court confirms validity of IRA 2012
    • The Supreme Court on March 28, 2018 decided that the Industrial Relations Act (IRA), which was enacted by parliament in 2012 after the 18th amendment, was a valid piece of legislation.
    • A three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also announced that the National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC) formed under Section 35 of the IRA 2012 had the legal jurisdiction to decide labour disputes relating to the employees (and other workers) of all companies, corporations and organizations operating in more than one province.
    • With this judgement, the Supreme court disposed of separate appeals lodged against judgements issued by the high courts of Sindh, Islamabad, Peshawar and Lahore. All the appeals filed against the high courts` decisions concerned common questions of law, which have been addressed in the Supreme Court judgement.
  3. SoftBank, S. Arabia announce $200bn the world`s biggest solar power project
    • SoftBank Group Corp Chief Executive Masayoshi Son announced on March 28, 2018 a $200 billion solar power project in Saudi Arabia, which he described as `the world`s biggest solar power generation.
    • The project is in cooperation with the kingdom`s young and powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a partner in the SoftBank Vision Fund, set up in 2016. The fund has already invested in companies in the US, India and Europe.
    • The deal is the first major investment by the fund in Saudi Arabia. It was announced in New York after a Saudi-US CE O forum held on the sidelines of the crown prince`s multi-day tour across the US.
  4. Poland to buy US missile system worth $4.8bn
    • Poland signed the largest arms procurement deal in its history on March 28, 2018, agreeing with the United States to buy Raytheon Co`s Patriot missile defence system for $4.75 billion in a major step to modernise its forces against a bolder Russia.
    • `It is an extraordinary, historic moment; it is Poland`s introduction into a whole new world of state-of-the-art technology, modern weaponry, and defensive means,` President Andrzej Duda said during the signing ceremony.
    • Nato member Poland has accelerated efforts to overhaul its ageing weaponry following Moscow`s annexation of Ukraine`s Crimea peninsula in 2014 and the resurgence of Russian military and political assertiveness towards its neighbours.
  5. China confirms N. Korean leader`s visit after two days of speculation
    • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged his commitment to denuclearisation and to meet US officials, China said on March 28, 2018 after his meeting with President Xi Jinping, who promised China would uphold friendship with its isolated neighbour.
    • After two days of speculation, China and North Korea both confirmed that Kim had travelled to Beijing and met Xi during what China called an unofficial visit.
    • The visit was Kim`s first known trip outside North Korea since he assumed power in 2011 and is believed by analysts to serve as preparation for upcoming summits with South Korea and the United States.
  6. Govt to put NDMA under control of PM’s Office
    • The government has decided to put the National Disaster Management Authority under the direct control of the Prime Minister’s Office with the main aim to remove bureaucratic hiccups coming in the way of efficiency and effectiveness of the authority.
    • Decision to this effect was made at the 5th meeting of National Disaster Management Commission held under the chair of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at the Prime Minister’s Office on March 28, 2018.
  7. Suu Kyi loyalist elected Myanmar president
    • Myanmar`s parliament on March 28, 2018 elected as the country`s new president a longtime loyalist of Aung San Suu Kyi who is expected to carry on his predecessor`s practice of deferring to her as her nation`s de facto leader.
    • The election of Win Myint comes as Suu Kyi`s civilian government has struggled to implement peace and national reconciliation, with the powerful military still embroiled in combat with ethnic rebels and under heavyinternationalcriticism for its brutal counterinsurgency campaign against the Muslim Rohingya minority.
  8. France to auction first Van Gogh painting in 20 years
    • The first Van Gogh painting to go under the hammer in France in more than two decades was unveiled on March 28, 2018.
    • `Women Mending Nets in the Dunes` which the Dutch artist painted early in his career at Scheveningen near The Hague, is expected to go for around five million euros ($6m) when it is auctioned in June.
    • But with the art market booming, and prices for artists like Vincent Van Gogh rocketing, experts said it was hard to predict exactly when the bidding would stop.
  9. Australian borad bans captain Smith, Warner for 12 months in ball-tampering plot
    • Australia cricket captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner have been banned from playing for their country for 12 months, with Warner identified on March 28, 2018 as the instigator of the ball tampering plot in the Test series in South Africa.
    • Cricket Australia (CA) also imposed a nine-month ban on Cameron Bancroft, who carried out the on-field tampering on the instructions of Warner and with the knowledge of skipper Smith.
    • Smith had earlier confirmed his punishment to a small group of Australian reporters beforeleaving the tour of South Africa in disgrace.
    • CA said Smith and Warner cannot play any first-class cricket at international or provincial level in Australia for a year. They would be permitted to play for their clubs in city-level leagues.
  10. Lanka president cuts PM’s duties in power struggle
    • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena March 28, 2018 reduced the responsibilities of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as a power struggle worsened within their uneasy coalition.
    • Sirisena took away the central bank, the policy-making National Operations Room and several other institutions from the control of Wickremesinghe, who had held them since coming to power in January 2015.
