  1. Heads of three Senate committees elected
  • Senators Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Muzaffar Hussain Shah and Sardar Yaqoob Nasar were on May 4, 2018 unanimously elected chairmen of three standing committees of the upper house of parliament.
  • Senator Javed Abbasi proposed Mr Sayed`s name for the Senate foreign affairs committee and it was seconded by Senator Nuzhat Sadiq.
  • The standing committee on national food security and research in its inaugural meeting elected Senator Muzaffar Shah as its chairman. His name was proposed by Senator Maula Bakhsh Chandio and seconded by Senator Sajid Mir.
  • Senator Nasar was elected chairman of the standing committee on inter-provincial coordination.
  1. British Pakistani becomes first directly elected female Mayor of London borough
  • A British Pakistani woman has made history by becoming the first directly elected mayor in a London borough.
  • Rokhsana Fiaz, who has been a councilor for Custom House in East London since 2014, won with 53,214 votes – 73.4 percent. As many as 35.84 percent of Newham turned out to vote for the council elections on May 3. Elections in 150 English councils were held on the same day.
  • Rokhsana Fiaz will replace Sir Robin Wales, who was deselected after 16 years in the post. At his last election, Sir Wales had received 61 percent of the votes. Rokhsana Fiaz will be in charge of nearly £250 million annual budget for Newham, which is known as one of the most diverse boroughs in the Western Europe and also one of the most deprived not only in Britain but in Western Europe.
  • Most of the residents of this borough trace their roots back to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and African countries.
  1. Quran education up to matric is compulsory now in Punjab
  • The Punjab Assembly on May 4, 2018 unanimously passed two bills including the one relating to compulsory education of Holy Quran up to matriculation.
  • The House unanimously passed private bill presented by JI’s Dr Waseem Akhtar- The Punjab Compulsory Teaching of the Holy Quran Bill 2017.
  • The legislation has made teaching of the Holy Quran part of curriculum from Class 1 to matriculation.
  • The House also passed The Punjab Sound Systems (Regulation) (Amendment) Bill 2018 that allow use of four loudspeakers at mosques only for call for prayers, sermon in Arabic during Juma and Eid prayers. These speakers can also be used for reciting Darood Sharif and announcement for missing children or deaths. Hate speeches will not be allowed.
  1. Neelum Jhelum project’s unit 1 completes reliability test
  • The first unit of the AJK-based 969MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project successfully completed the reliability test on May 4, 2018, paving the way for its commercial operation.
  • “Under the protocols, the unit will now be checked completely and adjustments if any will be carried out by the manufacturer/contractor,”.
  • The unit, was expected to start commercial operation thereafter. The first generating unit of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project was synchronised with the system on April 9. The second unit was scheduled in May, however, Wapda succeeded in commissioning this unit for trial generation ahead of schedule and synchronised it with the national grid on April 22. Both generating units have provided around 20 million units of electricity for the national grid during their test run.
  • The 969MW Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, located in Muzaffarabad district, has four generating units, each of them having generation capacity of 242.25MW. The remaining units are likely to commence by end June 2018 operation at one month interval each.
  1. No literature Nobel this year after sex scandal
  • Forr the first time in almost 70 years there will be no Nobel Literature Prize this year, after the Swedish Academy that selects the laureate failed to contain a deep crisis stemming from the anti-sexual harassment #MeToo campaign.
  • The body has been in turmoil since November when Swedish daily Dagens Nyheterin the wake of the global #MeToo campaign published the testimonies of 18 women claiming to have been raped, sexually assaulted or harassed by an influential culture figure with longstanding ties to the Academy.

  1. India’s massive military spending upsets Pakistan
  • India’s massive military spending has upset Pakistan as Islamabad contacted the United Nations to stop India’s arms buying spree.
  • Pakistan had apprised the UN chief, António Guterres, about the arms build-up by India – threatening regional peace.
  • India is threatening peace. The military spending is definitely targeting Pakistan or China. There should not be an imbalance in the region. India’s attitude is upsetting.
  • The Stockholm International Peace Research organisation said in its latest report that India stood fifth on the world’s biggest military spenders list, behind the United States, China, Saudi Arabia and Russia.
  1. Arabia launches $34.7bn drive to develop showbiz industry
  • After repealing a decades-long ban on cinemas only last year, Saudi Arabia has now launched an ambitious drive to become a culture and entertainment hub as part of sweeping modernisation plans.
  • American film star Katie Holmes and British actor-cum-director Idris Elba rubbed shoulders with Saudi officials, as the conservative kingdom kicked off an initiative to invest 130 billion riyals ($34.7 billion, 29 billion euros) in culture and leisure by 2020.
  • The goal is to create a true cultural industry, with theatres, cinemas and training centres.
  1. Israel pulls out of race for UN Council seat
  • Israel on May 4, 2018 dropped out of a race for a Security Council seat in 2019 and 2020 following a campaign by Arab states at the United Nations to block the bid.
  • The decision leaves the path clear for Germany and Belgium to take the two seats available for countries of the Western Europe and Others group when the General Assembly votes next month.
  • It was Israel`s first attempt to win a seat at the 15-member council.
  1. US Military Bans Huawei, ZTE Phones
  • Personnel on US military bases can no longer buy phones and other gear manufactured by Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE, after the Pentagon said the devices pose an “unacceptable” security risk
  • Concerns have heightened at the Pentagon about consumer electronics being used to snoop on or track service members.
  1. Breach-Valdez journalism prize awarded to Rea
  • Daniela Rea, a Mexican journalist known for her searing chronicles of the violence gripping her country, was awarded the first edition of the Breach-Valdez Prize in journalism and human rights.
  • Launched in March, the prize honors journalists who risk their lives to cover human rights abuses in Mexico, following in the footsteps of two Mexican colleagues murdered last year: Miroslava Breach and Javier Valdez.
  • Its sponsors – the United Nations, Agence France-Presse, the French embassy in Mexico and the Ibero-American University – praised Rea for her heartrending body of work in articles, books and documentary film telling the stories of missing and murdered Mexicans and the toll the violence takes on the country.
