  1. Cabinet delays approval of anti-money laundering powers
  • Pakistan`s efforts to avoid inclusion in the grey list of Financial Action Task Force (FATF) may have suffered a setback as the federal cabinet has refused to approve a summary sent by the finance division to notify an investigation and prosecuting agency under the Anti Money Laundering Act (AMLA)2010.
  • A statutory regulatory order, SRO611, was issued on June 9, 2016 to empower the Directorate General Intelligence & Investigation (DG I&I) of Inland Revenue to initiate proceedings against the people who had possibly laundered taxevaded money. But the notification was struck down by the Lahore High Court (LHC) in January 2018 on the plea that it was issued by a federal ministry without the express approval of the federal cabinet.
  1. Pakistani military seeks better relations with India, says report
  • The Pakistani military leadership is reaching out to India because it believes that the way to peace and prosperity is through military cooperation with India, says a new think-tank report.
  • `Attempts to open a dialogue come against a background of almost weekly exchanges of fire along the Line of Control in Kashmir,` notes the UK-based Royal Unites Services Institute (RUSI), in a report on renewed efforts to reduce tensions between the two neighbours. `Will New Delhi reciprocate?` asks the report, which was released in London this week.he report notes that `in a historic first last month,` chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa invited Sanjay Vishwasrao, the Indian military attaché, and his team to the Pakistan Day military parade in Islamabad. The move indicates that `ties between the two foes are warming up,` it adds,noting that Gen Bajwa followed this two weeks later by saying that the Pakistan military wanted peace and dialogue with India.
  • The two countries will also take part in joint military drills in Russia in September, with Chinese participation. Such developments mark a change in attitudes that started when Gen Bajwa became the army chief in November 2016, the report adds.
  1. MoU signed to produce Mercedes-Benz trucks in Pakistan
  • The National Logistics Cell (NLC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Daimler AG for local production of Mercedes-Benz trucks in Pakistan.
  • The MoU was signed on behalf of NLC by its Director General Major General Mushtaq Faisal and Pak NLC Motors CE O Zia Ahmed while Merce desBenz Special Trucks was represented by Klaus Fischinger, Head of Executive Committee and Dr Ralf Forcher, Head of Sales at Woerth, Germany.
  • It is considered that local assembly of these trucks will mark a major shift in the domestic logistics and transportation industry towards the European manufacturers who offer technologically advanced products that combine superior performance, environment friendliness, reliability and road safety.
  1. Pak Army, Air Force hold joint exercise
  • The Pakistan Army and Air Force tested their joint conventional firepower capability in Central Command exercise at Jhelum firing ranges on May 5, 2018.
  • Commander Central Command Lt General Azhar Saleh Abbasi briefed the audience about aims, objectives, and conduct of the exercise.
  • The exercise marked the culmination of a process aimed at integrating all available fire power assets/sensors held with both Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force through an optimised near real time Sensor – Shooter Grid in a Network Assisted Environment. Various concepts related to integration of firepower assets like PAF, Artillery, Air Defence, SSG, Army Aviation, Infantry and Armour in support of offensive and defensive manoeuvres in a conventional war were practised, perfected and validated during the exercise.
  • Pakistan Army CGS Lieutenant General Bilal Akbar witnessed the concluding event as chief guest.
  1. Gen Bajwa confirms death to 11 terrorists
  • The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa, on May 5, 2018 confirmed death sentence to 11 terrorists handed down by the military courts for various attacks on security forces and civilians leaving dozens dead.
  • A statement issued by the military said in total the attacks left 60 dead, including 36 civilians and 24 armed forces, Frontier Constabulary and police officials, while 142 people were injured.
  • The offenses included attacks on the armed forces and other law enforcement agencies, destruction of various educational institutions and a deadly rampage at the Bacha Khan University in the northwest in early 2016 that left 21 dead. “The army chief also confirmed life imprisonment to three convicts,” the statement added.

  • California`s economy has surpassed that of the United Kingdom to become the world`s fifth largest, according to new federal data made public.
  • California`s gross domestic product rose by $127 billion from 2016 to 2017, surpassing $2.7 trillion, the data said. Meanwhile, the UK`s economic output slightly shrunk over that time when measured in US dollars, due in part to exchange rate fluctuations.

  • Cambodia’s English-language daily The Phnom Penh Post was bought by a Malaysian investor, its chairman said on May 5, 2018, amid concerns that the sale could signal the end of independent media in the country ahead of elections in July.
  • The news comes amid an ongoing crackdown by Prime Minister Hun Sen and his allies against perceived critics, including opposition politicians, independent media and human rights groups ahead of the vote.
  1. US Navy reactivates its Atlantic 2nd Fleet
  • A top US navy admiral announces the re-establishment of the US 2nd Fleet – a Cold War command disbanded in 2011 – to patrol the North Atlantic and face a resurgent threat from Russia.
  • The chief of US Naval Operations, Admiral John Richardson, made the announcement during a change of command ceremony in the Atlantic naval port of Norfolk, Virginia.
  • The 2nd Fleet command was disbanded as a cost-savings measure in 2011, and its assets and personnel dispersed within the navy.
  1. Nasa blasts off Mars-bound spaceship, InSight, to study quakes
  • Nasa on May 5, 2018 launched its latest Mars lander, called InSight, designed to perch on the surface and listen for “Marsquakes” ahead of eventual human missions to explore the Red Planet.
  • “Three, two, one, liftoff!” said a Nasa commentator as the spacecraft blasted off on a dark, foggy morning atop an Atlas V rocket at 4:05 am Pacific time (1105 GMT) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, marking Nasa’s first interplanetary launch from the US west coast.
  • The $993 million project aims to expand our knowledge of interior conditions on Mars, inform efforts to send human explorers there, and reveal how rocky planets like the Earth formed billions of years ago.
  1. Sardar Naveed elected PFA president
  • Sardar Naveed Haider Khan was on May 5, 2018 elected president of the Punjab Football Association (PFA) after a sweeping 23-13 vote in his favour in the polls held by Supreme Court`s appointed election commissioner Ali Raza.
  • It marks a step towards resolving a three year dispute over the genuine body of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). The election came after the Supreme Court last month ordered fresh elections of the PFA and the PFF to resolve the matter once and for all.
  • Sardar Naveed was the candidate fielded by Faisal Saleh Hayat, the PFF president who is recognised by FIFA.
