  1. Dr Suleman Khan made new IB chief
  • Dr Mohammad Suleman Khan, additional director general of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), has been made chief of the civilian spy agency of the country.
  • A notification issued by the Establishment Division on May 7, 2018 stated that Dr Suleman, an officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, had been promoted from BPS-21 to 22.
  • Dr Suleman is the 40th chief of the IB which is operationally under the prime minister and mainly responsible for countering insecurity within the country, which includes gathering information relating to cross-provincial crime and terrorism.
  • Dr Suleman`s predecessor Aftab Sultan, also from the police service, retired on April 3 after serving as IB head since June 7, 2013.
  1. Govt, allies fail to agree on Fata reforms timeline
  • Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Ababsi on May 8, 2018 failed to persuade the government allies on the timeline fixed by the civil and military leadership last week for mainstreaming the country`s tribal areas by taking various actions, including merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  • Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) president Mehmood Khan Achakzai stuck to their positions, forcefully opposing the move while asking the government `not to show haste in the matter which is sensitive in nature`.
  • While the JUI-F chief reiterated the call for holding a referendum in Fata on the issue of merger, PM Abbasi decided to go for another round of consultations with the parties on Thursday, the sources said.
  • The sources said that the prime minister informed the parliamentary leaders attending the meeting that the merger of Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would take place in May 2019. He said that timely implementation of the proposed reforms was needed for the mainstreaming of Fata, according to the sources.
  • The prime minister had called the meeting of parliamentary heads, which was also attended by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, to take them into confidence on the decisions taken by the National Implementation Committee on Fata Reforms (NICFR) on May 2.
  1. Chairpersons of four Senate committees elected
  • Senators retired Lt Gen Abdul Qayyum, Faisal Javed, Shibli Faraz and Sassui Palijo were unanimously elected on May 7, 2018 as chairpersons of four Senate standing committees.
  • For the Standing Committee on Defence Production, Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf proposed Mr Qayyum`s name as its chairman and the move was seconded by members.
  • For the Standing Committee on Information Broadcasting and National Heritage, Senator Maula Bux Chandio proposed the name of Senator Faisal Javed and he was unanimously elected as its chairman.
  • The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce and Textile in its inaugural meeting unanimously elected Senator Shibli Faraz as its chairman
  • The Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs elected Senator Sassui Palijo as its chairperson
  1. Putin sworn in as Russian president for fourth term, keeps Medvedev as PM
  • President Vladimir Putin stuck with his long-serving prime minister in his first act after being sworn in for a new term on May 7, 2018, signalling that he would keep faith with a policy direction that has brought Russia into conflict with the West.
  • Standing in the ornately-decorated Andreyevsky Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace, with his hand on a gold-embossed copy of the constitution, Putin, 65, swore to serve the Russian people, to safeguard rights and freedoms, and protect Russian sovereignty.
  • Putin secured a new six-year term after more than 70 per cent of voters backed him in a March 18 presidential election. His most dangerous challenger, Alexei Navalny, was not allowed to take part.
  • After the inauguration ceremony, Putin had nominated Dmitry Medvedev again to be prime minister in his new term.
  • Medvedev, a loyal Putin lieutenant, has held the job since 2012.

  1. Foreign donors fuelling corruption in Afghanistan: US watchdog
  • Foreign donors have flooded Afghanistan with more money than it can absorb, exacerbating corruption and fuelling the drawn-out conflict, US independent auditor John Sopko.
  • The comments by the US government’s special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction (SIGAR) followed the recent stinging assessment of the World Bank’s handling of the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF).
  • SIGAR found there was little oversight of how and where more than $10 billion contributed by 34 donor nations and agencies since 2002 had been spent. The World Bank also was unable to accurately evaluate the impact of the money.
  • Such corruption is helping to fuel the protracted conflict, now in its 17th year, by eroding support for the Afghan government and morale among its security forces “who are fighting and dying”, Sopko said.
  1. Punjab govt launches crop insurance scheme
  • Punjab government has started crop insurance scheme (Takaful) to protect the income of farmers against unfavorable circumstances.
  • The scheme will launch from Kharif 2018 and in first it will cover Sheikupura, Sahiwal, Loadhran and Rahim Yar Khan districts.
  • Under this scheme,100 per cent subsidy on Insurance Premium for land owners of up to five acres while 50 per cent subsidy on Insurance Premium for land owners from five acre to 25 acres. This scheme will be applicable during its first phase on cotton and rice fields.
  • In the second phase, insurance will be applicable on more crops including sugarcane, maize, wheat, orchards and vegetables. Under this scheme, compensation will be done in case of natural calamity or low yield.
  1. India decline day-night test vs Australia
  • India have declined to play their maiden day-night test against Australia, leaving the series-opener in Adelaide a day match, Cricket Australia confirmed on May 7, 2018.
  • The Australian board had hoped India would agree to a floodlit match for the Dec. 6-10 test at Adelaide Oval, where the home side have beaten England, South Africa and New Zealand in pink-ball matches over the past three home summers.
  • “We can confirm that we have received advice from the Board of Control for Cricket in India that it is not prepared to participate in a proposed Day-Night test in Adelaide this summer,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
