  1. Shaukat Hussain appointed SECP chairman
  • The federal government has appointed Shaukat Hussain as chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) with immediate effect.
  • “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan Act, 1997 (XLII of 1997), the federal government is pleased to appoint Shaukat Hussain, commissioner Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, as the SECP chairman with immediate effect,” stated a notification issued by the ministry of finance on May 12, 2018.
  • On July 24 last year, the federal government had suspended Zafar Hijazi from the post of chairman SECP in an official record tampering case. The government had appointed Zafar Abdullah as acting chairman of the SECP
  1. Agri Warehouse-Recovery Programme launched
  • Punjab government has launched “Agricultural Warehouse-Recovery Programme” on the basis of public-private partnership to protect agricultural commodities and facilitate farmers.

  • A special US plane that arrived at Nur Khan Airbase Rawalpindi on May 12, 2018 to fly out Military Attaché at US Embassy Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall returned after the Interior Ministry refused to issue no objection certificate to the American diplomat.
  • The US special plane (C-130) had landed at the airport on May 12, 2018 morning but the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prevented Col Hall to leave the country as he was not having clearance from the relevant quarters.
  • Col Hall, the defence and air attaché at the US embassy, had hit and killed a motorcyclist at a traffic signal in Islamabad on April 7 and injured another. The deceased was identified as Ateeq Baig.
  1. Hockey hero Mansoor Ahmed passes away
  • Pakistan’s World Cup-winning hockey goalkeeper Mansoor Ahmed passed away at a hospital in Karachi on May 12, 2018.
  • The 49-year-old had been suffering from complications stemming from a pacemaker and stents implanted in his heart.
  • Ahmed had been a sporting icon in Pakistan since helping the country win the 1994 World Cup in Sydney with his penalty stroke save against the Netherlands in the final.
  • He played 338 international matches and also participated in three Olympics and various other high-profile events in a career spanning from 1986 to 2000.
  1. North Korea to destroy nuclear site ahead of US summit
  • North Korea will destroy its nuclear test site later this month, ahead of a summit with the United States, pledging to blow up its tunnels in front of invited foreign media.
  • The display at Punggye-ri, in the northeast of the country, will be another step in leader Kim Jong Un’s charm offensive, with a ceremony scheduled between May 23-25.

  • He will visit Beijing, Moscow and Brussels, a spokesman said, holding meetings with all of the remaining parties to the 2015 agreement.
  1. Govt shuts offices of 11 INGOs
  • Authorities have closed offices of 11 international non-governmental organisations after the Ministry of Interior rejected their registration request.
  • Following ministry’s refusal, police took action and locked the offices of UK, US and other foreign countries-based NGOs. The foreign organisations have been barred from carrying out any operation in Pakistan.
  • The NGOs include Ziaul Ummat Foundation (UK), Al-Khair Foundation (UK), Central Asia Education Trust Pakistan, Centre for International Enterprise (US), International Alert (UK), Danish Refugee Council (Denmark), Foundation Open Society Institute Pakistan (Switzerland), Oxfam Novib (Holland), Acumen Fund International (US) and AVDRC World Vegetable Centre (Taiwan).
  1. SpaceX launches most powerful Falcon 9 yet
  • SpaceX on May 11, 2018 blasted off its newest and most powerful Falcon 9 rocket, known as the Block 5, carrying the first high-orbit communications satellite for Bangladesh and marking a leap forward in re-usability for the California-based aerospace company.
  • The rocket is designed to require far less maintenance and refurbishment between flights, and is certified to carry humans to space later this year when SpaceX launches its Dragon crew capsule to the International Space Station.
  • “Three, two one, zero, ignition, liftoff,” a SpaceX commentator said as the rocket launched at 4:14 pm (2014 GMT) from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
  • The Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket’s main goal for its maiden mission was to propel a communications satellite for Bangladesh, called Bangabandhu Satellite-1, to a geostationary transfer orbit roughly 22,000 miles (35,000 kilometers) above Earth.
