  1. 700 women handed over bike keys under WoW
  • Around 700 women were handed over keys of motorcycles under a project of the Chief Minister`s Strategic Reforms Unit (SRU) at an event held at Alhamra Lahore on May 13, 2018.
  • The keys were handed over by Punjab Excise Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman under the Women on Wheels (WoW) initiative. The minster announced that while the programme had been initiated in five districts of Punjab, they intended to expand it to all 36 districts of the province and make the sight of women riding motorbikes common for society.
  1. Cambodia makes first arrest using new royal insult law
  • A 50-year-old teacher has been arrested in Cambodia for allegedly insulting the monarchy in a comment posted on Facebook, police said on May 13, 2018, the first such arrest since the country adopted a royal insult law earlier this year.
  • Cambodia`s parliament unanimously adopted a law in February, that forbids insulting the monarchy.
  • Rights groups expressed concern that such legislation, already in effect in neighboruing Thailand, could be used against critics of the government.
  1. Israel`s Netta wins Eurovision Song contest
  • Israel won the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon May 13, 2018 after singer Netta Barzilai beat 25 other contestants with her upbeat song `Toy` whose lyrics have been embraced by the #MeToo movement.
  • The winning track, which contained refrains such as `I am not your toy, you stupid boy`, summed up the concerns of many women who have adopted the growing global movement against sexual harassment.
  • The 25-year-old former singer in the Israeli Navy band accompanied her winning performance with trills, clucking sounds and chicken-like dance moves in an eye-catching and bizarre performance that is often typical of the Eurovision contest.
  • Eurovision was first held in 1956 with the aim of uniting Europe after World War II. Today it has an esti-mated global audience of around 200 million people more than the Super Bowl in the United States and has served as a global launching pad for the likes of ABBA and Celine Dion.
  1. China`s first home-built aircraft carrier begins sea trials
  • China`s first entirely home-built aircraft carrier began sea trials on May 13, 2018 in a sign of the growing sophistication of the country`s domestic arms industry.
  • The still-unnamed ship left dock in the nohhern port of Dalian at 7am to `test the reliability and stability of its propulsion and other system.
  • China is also planning to build a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier capable of remaining at sea for long durations. China has the world`s largest navy in terms of numbers of ships, although it lags behind the US in technology and combat capabilities
  1. First climbers of 2018 reach Everest summit
  • Eight Nepali climbers reached the top of Mount Everest on May 13, 2018, the first of hundreds of climbers expected to summit the world’s highest mountain in coming weeks.
  • The team reached the summit on May 13, 2018 afternoon while fixing ropes for foreign climbers, who will begin this week to ascend the mountain.
  • Iswari Paudel of Himalayan Guides Nepal, the company assigned to fix the ropes, confirmed that the team has scaled the mountain. “This has paved the way for other climbers to reach the summit as well. If weather permits, we will see many summits this week,” he said.

  1. Lahore Literary Festival’s 3rd edition held in New York
  • The third edition of Lahore Literary Festival (LLF) concluded in New York on May 12, 2018 after a series of lively discussions on Pakistan’s arts and literature as well as other key facets of its national life, with Pakistani Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi stating that the event has become “a prominent voice of our country’s intellectual journey.”
  • The festival drew a large number of New Yorkers to the spacious hall of Asia Society, which co-hosts the event.
  • An array of distinguished speakers underlined Lahore’s standing as Pakistan’s cultural hub, and said that LFF had brought ideas and showcased Pakistan’s talent before American audiences.
  1. First freight train from China arrives in Belgium
  • After travelling 16 days and covering a distance of 11,000 km, the first China-Belgium freight train from China’s Tangshan port has arrived in the Belgian port of Antwerp.
  • The train with 41 containers which left Tangshan on April 26, was officially welcomed on May 12, 2018 in Antwerp. The direct railway link between China and Belgium is part of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.
  • By opening up a new and quick route into China, the initiative offers plenty of new opportunities for the development of the Sino-Belgian trade relations.
  • This direct train link puts our port on the BRI (the Belt and Road Initiative) map and will further strengthen our ties with China.
  1. First female Bishop of London installed
  • Sarah Mullally was installed as the first female Bishop of London on May 12, 2018, becoming the third most senior cleric in the Church of England. Mullally was installed as the 133rd Bishop of London at St. Paul’s Cathedral on International Nurses Day — Florence Nightingale’s birthday — echoing the new bishop’s former career as a nurse.
  • She followed the tradition of knocking three times on the cathedral’s Great West Door with her pastoral staff. She is now the state church’s third most senior cleric, after the archbishops of Canterbury and York.
  • The Church of England’s general synod gave final approval to a historic reform allowing female bishops in 2014 after years of bitter wrangling between factions who opposed and supported the move.
  1. Chinese scientists develop fire-resistant wallpaper
  • Chinese scientists have developed a fire-resistant wallpaper that not only can withstand flames, but also detect fires and trigger an alarm if a fire occurs.
  • The wallpaper was designed by scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
  • Most of the wallpaper on the market today is made of highly flammable materials such as plant cellulose fibers or synthetic polymers, which can spread the fire rather than preventing it. The new wallpaper can withstand a high temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius. It is made of an inorganic fire-resistant hydroxyapatite nanowire paper and a graphene oxide temperature sensor. The sensor is attached to the back of the wallpaper through a simple drop-casting process using an ink containing graphene oxide. It is then connected to the metal wire as an electrode.
  • Graphene oxide is not electrically conductive at room temperature, but can become conductive at high temperatures, triggering the fire alarm device.
  • The wallpaper is highly flexible and can be made into various shapes, dyed different colors, and printed with commercial printers.
  1. Erdogan in UK for talks with ‘valuable’ ally
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Britain was a “valuable and reliable” strategic ally after he arrived in the UK on May 13, 2018 ahead of talks with Prime Minister Theresa May.
  • Erdogan said he wanted to boost trade and security ties between London and Ankara, with Britain preparing to leave the European Union in March next year.
