  1. Pakistan, Afghanistan pledge to make fresh start in relations
  • With their new bilateral engagement framework Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS) -in place, senior officials of Pakistan and Afghanistan pledged to make a fresh start in their relations that have mostly remained tense.
  • Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai and Pakistan`s National Security Adviser retired Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua during their meeting agreed to intensify efforts for success of APAPPS and take a fresh start, bridge existing gaps, build formal mechanism of cooperation in all areas of mutual interests and take collective actions to strengthen trust between the two countries APAPPS became operational with the meeting of Afghan deputy FM Karzai and Pakistan`s Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua in Islamabad on May 14, 2018.
  • APAPPS would have six working groups including those on security and intelligence the two issues at the core of the troubles in Pak Afghan ties.
  1. Senate passes bill to combat human trafficking
  • The Senate on May 15, 2018 passed a bill to prevent and combat human trafficking especially trading of women and children, in an unusual manner, what the government said the law was being passed to fulfil some “international obligations”.
  • An ordinance regarding the bill promulgated by the president last month was laid in the House following a request made by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry that the same may be taken up as a bill and passed without being referred to the standing committee concerned.

  • Lawmakers in the devolved Edinburgh assembly voted by 93 to 30 to refuse legislative consent for the highly-contested European Union (Withdrawal) Bill currently being debated by the British parliament.
  • British Prime Minister Theresa May is under no obligation to amend her Brexit plan in response to Holyrood`s objection.
  • However, experts warn that confrontation between London and Edinburgh could push Scotland towards independence. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the secessionist Scottish National Party (SNP), said Britain was heading into uncharted constitutional territory.
  1. US Iran sanctions to target auto, aircraft sectors first
  • The United States will re-establish sanctions against Iran progressively, kicking off with the automobile and civil aviation sectors.
  • Energy and finance will follow, with companies facing punishment if they continue to do business with Iran, after US President Donald Trump withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal with Tehran.
  • Aug 6 will see the re-introduction of auto and civil aviation sanctions, according to the source. Sanctions in the energy sector, covering oil, gas and petro-chemicals, will follow on Nov 4.
  1. UNDP to help BOI form Impact Investment Fund
  • In efforts to augment the impact investment ecosystem in Pakistan and introduce Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-aligned financing, United Nations Development Programme in Pakistan (UNDP) will support Board of Investment (BOI) in exploring the establishment of Pakistan’s first Impact Investment Fund.
  • The fund will be aligned with the Government’s Vision 2025 Roadmap and is an essential step in helping Pakistan achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • The partnership hopes to leverage the private sector and capital markets to support SDG-aligned financing and investment models focusing on venture capital – capital that is prepared to take on additional risk to ‘kick-start’ underserved sectors and districts within Pakistan.

  • Additional Secretary Babar Amin has been posted to Australia, Director General Mansoor Ahmad Khan to Austria, Director General Saqlain Syedah to Bangladesh, Director General Kazi Imtiaz to Kazakhstan, Additional Secretary Zaheer Janjua to New Zealand and Additional Secretary/Chief of Protocol Sahibzada Ahmad Khan to the United Kingdom.
  1. Sex bias kills 240,000 infant girls in India yearly
  • Almost a quarter-of-a-million girls younger than five die in India every year due to neglect resulting from society’s preference for sons, a gender discrimination study found on May 15, 2018.
  • This was over and above those aborted simply for being female, researchers wrote in The Lancet medical journal.
  • Guilmoto and a team used population data from 46 countries to calculate how many infant girls would have died in a society where there was no discrimination impact, and how many died in reality. The difference, about 19 deaths out of every 1,000 girls born between 2000 and 2005, was ascribed to the effects of gender bias.
  • This amounted to about 239,000 deaths per year, or 2.4 million over a decade. “Around 22 percent of the overall mortality burden of females under five (in India) is therefore due to gender bias,” the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) a research institute based in Austria, said in a statement. The problem was most pronounced in northern India, the researchers found, with states Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, accounting for two-thirds of the excess deaths.

  • Retired Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar was reelected unopposed as the Pakistan Hockey Federation president while Shahbaz Ahmed Sr retained his position as the federation`s secretary on May 15, 2018.
  • The final phase of the PHF elections was conducted here under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner Chaudhry Mohammad Riaz. Khokhar and Shahbaz were re-elected for the next four years.
  • Khawar Anwar Khawaja (Punjab), Mohamad Saeed Khan (KP), Chaudhry Ismail Gujjar (Balochistan), Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah (Sindh) were elected as vice presidents Ikhlag Usmani was elected as the federation`s treasurer.
  1. Shashank Manohar re-elected as ICC chairman
  • India`s Shashank Manohar has been re-elected chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for another two years, the sport`s world governing body said on May 15, 2018.
  • Manohar, who became the ICC`s first independent chairman in 2016, was elected unopposed for a second term after a tenure marked by broad reforms. He was the sole nominee for the position.
  • The 60-year-old former head of the Indian board successfully revised the ICC`s governance and pushed for the appointment of its first independent female director.
