  1. NSC for granting more autonomy to AJK, GB
  • The civil and military leadership has agreed to grant more administrative and financial autonomy to Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan while keeping AJK and GB councils as advisory bodies.
  • A decision to this effect was taken on May 19, 2018 at a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC), the apex civil-military forum, after a detailed reflection on the reform proposals about AJK and GB in the light of the recommendations of a Sartaj Aziz-led committee.
  • In the NSC marathon session, which continued for over four hours, the civil and military leadership also put its weight behind the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) into the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
  • The NSC also recommended granting a five-year tax levy to GB so as to create adequate incentives for the development of the region and bring it at par with other developed areas of the country.
  1. KP far behind Punjab, reports UNDP
  • The policy of mega projects have been proved very effective in Punjab for public welfare and development and it has become the centre of the public debate ahead of the general elections, says a UNDP report.
  • “Punjab is known as a province building large infrastructure, roads, underpasses, overpasses, bypasses, power stations, metro bus systems, orange train and other means of mass transit. On the other hand, there are companies for clean drinking water and waste management,” it adds.
  • As opposed to this, the image of KP painted by its government and the ruling party is limited to the imaginations of development. They have laid emphasis on delivering services, changing the way education is imparted and health is accessed and delivered.
  1. Aftab Akbar appointed Railways CEO
  • The Ministry of Pakistan Railways has appointed Muhammad Aftab Akbar of Commercial Transportation Group (grade-22) as chief executive officer/senior general manager of Pakistan Railways after approval from the prime minister on May 19, 2018
  • Aftab had been working as managing director Pakistan Railways Advisory & Consultancy Services (PRACS), a sub-institute of the railways, before his appointment as the CEO. The newly-posted CEO joined the department in 1984.
  1. Modi opens controversial power station in held Kashmir
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on May 19, 2018 a hydroelectric power plant in India-held Jammu and Kashmir, amid protests from Pakistan.
  • The 330-megawatt Kishanganga hydropower station is one of the projects that India has fast tracked in the disputed Himalayan region amid frosty ties between the two countries.
  • `This region cannot only become self-sufficient in power but also produce for other regions of the country,` Modi said in Srinagar.
  • Pakistan has opposed some of these projects, saying they violate a World Bank-mediated treaty on the sharing of waters from the Indus and its tributaries upon which 80 per cent of its irrigated agriculture depends.
  1. OIC calls for international force to protect Palestinians
  • A summit in Istanbul of Muslim heads of state called for the creation of an international peacekeeping force to protect the Palestinians.
  • The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) – seeking to bridge severe differences within the Muslim world – said in a final communique that Israel had carried out the “wilful murder” of some 60 Palestinians on the Gaza border.
  • It called “for the international protection of the Palestinian population, including through dispatching of international protection force”.
  • The summit had been called at a few days notice by Erdogan, who had earlier addressed thousands at an open air rally in Istanbul to express solidarity with the Palestinians.

  1. US slaps new sanctions on Venezuela
  • The US Treasury announced that it has imposed sanctions on an influential Venezuelan political figure, three persons related to him and his alleged “corruption network.”
  • The Treasury said in a statement that it has designated Diosdado Cabello, the first-vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, the party of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and Cabello’s wife and brother.
  • A businessman, Rafael Alfredo Sarria Diaz, who has been accused of acting on behalf of Cabello, was also on the blacklist. The statement referred to Cabello as “the second most powerful man in Venezuela” after Maduro, accusing him of money laundering and involvement in trafficking drugs from Venezuela to Europe.
  1. Chinese bombers land on South Sea runway
  • China has for the first time landed several bombers on an island in the disputed South China Sea, a move that could provoke renewed tensions between countries bordering the strategically vital maritime region.
  • Several bombers of various types – including the long-range, nuclear strike capable H-6K – carried out landing and take off drills at an unidentified island airfield after carrying out simulated strike training on targets at sea.
  • Wang Mingliang, a defense expert cited in the statement, said the takeoff and landing exercises on islands in the South China Sea will help the air force “strengthen its combat capability to deal with maritime security threats”.
  1. Cleric Moqtada al-Sadr`s bloc wins Iraq election
  • A political bloc led by populist cleric Moqtada alSadr, a long-time adversary of the United States who also opposes Iranian influence in Iraq, has won the country`s parliamentary election on May 19, 2018.
  • Sadr himself cannot become prime minister as he did not run in the election, though his bloc`s victory puts him in a position to have a strong say in negotiations. His Sairoon electoral list captured 54 parliamentary seats.
  • The Victory Alliance, headed by incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, trailed in third place with 42 seats, several seats behind the Al-Fatih bloc, which won 47 seats.
  • Al-Fatih is led by Hadi al-Amiri, who has close ties with Iran and heads an umbrella group of paramilitaries that played a key role in defeating the militant Islamic State group.
  1. Hitler definitely died in 1945: New study
  • Adolf Hitler definitely died in 1945 in Berlin, from taking cyanide and a bullet, according to French researchers who were given rare access to fragments of the dictator’s teeth held in Moscow.
  • “The teeth are authentic, there is no possible doubt. Our study proves that Hitler died in 1945,” professor Philippe Charlier told AFP.
  • “We can stop all the conspiracy theories about Hitler. He did not flee to Argentina in a submarine, he is not in a hidden base in Antarctica or on the dark side of the moon,” Charlier said.
  • The study, which Charlier co-authored with four other researchers, was published Friday in the scientific magazine European Journal of Internal Medicine
  1. Pakistan’s Maaz takes silver in Wushu championship
  • Pakistan’s Maaz Khan finished as runner-up in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization International Wushu Sanda Tournament, held in Chongqing (China).
  • Khan who was up against a Chinese competitor had to pull out with a foot injury during the second round, settling for a silver medal.
  • On May 18, 2018, Khan had defeated India’s Pawan Gupta in the semi-final of 75-kilogramme category of the event. Moreover, Zahoor Ahmed knocked out his Indian opponent in the semi-final of the 52- kilogramme.
  • The event, which started on May 16, come to an end on May 20.
