  1. Pakistan goes to WB today to protect water rights
  • Pakistan will raise its concerns over the inauguration of the Kishanganga hydropower plant with the World Bank on May 21, 2018, arguing that the dam violates the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty.
  • A high-level Pakistani delegation arrived in Washington on May 20, 2018 for the three day talks, which would cover four key points: the height of the Kishanganga dam, its capacity to hold water, Pakistan`s demand for setting up a court of arbitration to settle the dispute, and India`s counter-demand for an international expert.
  • On May 19, 2018, India`s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the dam, ignoring Pakistan`s objections and the World Bank`s efforts to find a solution acceptable to both India and Pakistan.
  1. Omani elected head of WHO’s Mediterranean region
  • During special session of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO), Dr Ahmed Al Mandhari of Oman was elected as regional director for the region for a period of five years.
  • The seat became vacant after the sudden death of the former regional head Dr Mahmoud Fikri of UAE.
  • According to an official statement from the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) on May 20, 2018, NHS Minister Saira Afzal Tarar chaired a special session to elect the head of WHO EMRO, which includes 22 countries, in Geneva.
  • The election was contested by seven countries from the EMRO including Oman, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt and Iraq. Each candidate made a presentation on how they propose to take the organisation’s agenda forward to improve health of the people of the region that stretches from Pakistan in South Asia to Mauritania in North Africa.

  • Adviser to Balochistan Chief Minster on Finance Dr Ruqqaya Saeed Hashmi has resigned from office and said nothing is more important than respect and honour, on May 20, 2018.
  • While she confirmed that she had sent her resignation to the chief minister, she did not mention the reason. She stated she was tendering her resignation due to personal reason. However, the chief minister has not yet accepted it so far.
  1. Indian court jails former diplomat for passing on secrets to Pakistan
  • An Indian diplomat convicted on charges of passing state secrets to Pakistan`s intelligence services has been jailed for three years, on May 20, 2018.
  • Madhuri Gupta was found guilty in a New Delhi court on May 19, 2018 of `spying and wrongful communication of information` while posted to the Indian embassy in Islamabad.
  • Gupta, 61, was arrested in 2010 for allegedly passing information to the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
  • As a second secretary, Gupta was among the lowest ranked officials at the highly sensitive embassy in the Pakistani capital.
  1. Cheif of Army Staff (COAS) visits UAE
  • Cheif of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa Sunday visited United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • During the day long visit, the COAS met with Crown Prince Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Abu Dhabi.
  • Matters of mutual interest including regional security and bilateral defence cooperation came under discussion during the meeting.

  1. US, China agree to abandon trade war
  • US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin confirmed May 20, 2018 that Washington and Beijing have agreed to back off from imposing tariffs on each other, a day after reaching an accord on slashing the American trade deficit with China.
  • “We have made very meaningful progress and we agreed on a framework,” Mnuchin told. “So right now we have agreed to put the tariffs on hold while we try to execute the framework.”
  • China’s Vice Premier Liu He, who led a high-level delegation to the United States this week, meantime confirmed that “the two sides reached a consensus, will not fight a trade war, and will stop increasing tariffs on each other,” official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
  • The apparent detente between the two economic giants follows months of increasing tensions that have set markets on edge over fears of a damaging trade war. The US-Chinese thaw raised concerns in some other countries still facing potential US tariffs, however, with France saying it could come “at the expense of Europe.”
  1. China’s FAST telescope to get new receiver
  • China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, will have with a new receiver installed to boost its efficiency in surveying the sky.
  • The 19-beam L-band receiver, first of its kind worldwide, is expected to be put into use in early June and it will increase FAST’s survey speed by five to six times, according to Science and Technology Daily.
  • The receiver was jointly developed by scientists from China and Australia. It weighs 1.2 tonnes and cost over 20 million yuan (about 3.14 million US dollars).

  • Rafael Nadal won the Rome Masters for the eighth time on May 20, 2018 when he defeated defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 after a stunning comeback.
  • German second seed Zverev was 3-1 up in the decider before two rain stoppages halted his momentum. Top seed Nadal raced away with the last five games to secure a 32nd Masters title and ensure a return to the world number one spot.
  • Elina Svitolina underlined her status as a top favourite for the French Open by sweeping Simona Halep aside 6-0, 6-4 to successfully defend her Italian Open crown on May 20, 2018.
  • In a repeat of last year’s final at the Foro Italico, Ukrainian Svitolina, seeded fourth, was up against Halep a day after the Romanian top seed had ousted Russian Maria Sharapova.
  1. Middle East historian Bernard Lewis dies at 101
  • Lewis, a pre-eminent scholar of Middle Eastern history whose work (The Arabs in History, The Middle East and the West, The Emergence of Modern Turkey) profoundly shaped Western views of the region including fears of a `clash of civilisations` but also brought scorn from critics who considered his views elitist and favouring Western intervention, died on May 20, 2018 in Voorhees, New Jersey. He was 101.
  • Dr Lewis` prolific scholarship including more than 30 books, hundreds of articles and competence in at least a dozen languages -traced fault lines that define the modern Middle East, such as sectarian divisions, the rise of radical Islamists and entrenched dictatorships, some backed by the West.
  • Along the way, Lewis often gained a privileged vantage point for events in the region during a life that spanned the era of T.E.
  1. Nepali photojournalist scales world’s highest peak for first time
  • Nepali photojournalist Purnima Shrestha has scaled the world’s highest peak Mount Qomolangma, becoming the first photojournalist from Nepal to stand atop, authorities confirmed.
  • This is the first ascent of 27-year-old Shrestha to the 8,848-meter high Qomolangma, known as Sagarmatha in Nepali language. “Purnima Shrestha reached summit on May 19, 2018 morning at 8:10 a.m. local time,.
  • Shrestha, who hails from Gorkha district of Nepal, had left for the summit bid on May 15, 2018 from the base camp. According to Sherpa, it usually takes four to five days for the climbing team to reach the top from the base camp via four different high camps. Shrestha, who has been doing photo journalism for last five years, is affiliated with Karobar national daily along with Food and Wine magazine.
