  1. No US plans for unilateral action, Pakistan told
    • The United States has assured Pakistan that no unilateral action on its territory is being planned despite the suspension of military aid and a flurry of hostile statements
    • The assurance was extended to Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa during his telephonic conversation with Centcom Commander Gen Joseph Votel

  2. First key step taken towards Fata mainstreaming
    • The National Assembly made history on January 12, 2018 by abolishing the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR), an oppressive colonial-era law imposed in the tribal areas, in order to pass legislation that would extend the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and the Peshawar High Court (PHC) to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) a long-standing demand of the people of the fron-tier tribal region
    • The bill titled Supreme Court and High Court (extension of jurisdiction to Fata) Act 2017 was unanimously passed by the lower house of parliament
    • The historic legislation extends the jurisdiction of the apex court and the PHC to the tribal areas under the Fata Reforms Package.
    • The proposed merger of Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the development of Fata will also be carried out under the package.
    • The bill will now be sent to the Senate where it will become law after its passage by the upper house.
    • `The Supreme Court of Pakistan shall have, in relation to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, the same jurisdiction as it has in relation to the province of KP.
    • The Peshawar High Court shall have, in relation to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, the same jurisdiction as it has relation to the province of the KP,`
  3. Roadmap for new internal security policy approved
    • A high-level meeting held on January 12, 2018 with Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal in the chair approved the roadmap for a new internal security policy.
    • The plan includes three rounds of consultation sessions involving key stakeholders and a national conference on internal security.
    • The policy framework identified political parties, policymakers, academics, analysts, educationists, journalists, religious scholars, legal experts, civil society organisations and representatives of marginalised groups youth, minorities, women who will be engaged during the process of policy formulation as major stakeholders.
    • The key inputs required from the government departments include an assessment of the initiatives that have been effective in ensuring security and those that are now redundant as well as assessment of key bottlenecks and blockages that impede optimal performance and suggestions to remove the impediments and make government departments and law enforcement agencies more effective
  4. SC dissolves PMDC, substitutes it with nine-member ad hoc council
    • The Supreme Court on January 12, 2018 dissolved the 35-member Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and substituted it with a nine-member ad-hoc council headed by one of its former judges, Shakirullah Jan
    • A three-judge SC bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also ordered that the nine-member council will immediately takeover and run the affairs of the PMDC.
    • The first meeting of the council is to be convened on Jan 18 whereas the present registrar of the council, Wasim Hashmi, will continue to of ficiate in his current position.
    • The decision, the detailed reasons of which will be announced later, came on a set of petitions challenging the Dec 7, 2017Lahore High Court (LHC) judgment which also dissolved the council and declared the council`s admissions regulations of 2016 and the central induction policy of 2016 illegal
  5. President Widodo to address joint sitting on 26th
    • President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo will address the joint sitting of the Parliament (Majlis-e-Shoora) on January 26 (Friday)
    • Joko Widodo will be the 17th foreign dignitary, who will address the National Assembly and Senate’s joint sitting
    • President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo will be the second president of Indonesia who will address the joint sitting of the Parliament. Earlier, President of Indonesia Dr Ahmed Soekarno had addressed the National Assembly of Pakistan on June 26, 1963
    • Tayyip Erdogan has the honour to address the joint sitting of the Parliament thrice

    • US President Donald Trump cancelled a trip to London scheduled for next month to open a new embassy

    • A total of 31 small satellites were launched into space on January 12, 2018. More than half of the micro and nano satellites were for the Unites States, and the remainder for India, Canada, Finland, France, South Korea and the United Kingdom
    • India will use its latest satellites for better border surveillance and obtaining high resolution images of the earth

    • Saudi Arabia allowed women to enter a football stadium for the first time to watch a match on January 12, 2018, as the ultra-conservative kingdom eases strict decades-old rules separating the sexes
    • The new measure comes after Riyadh, long known for imposing harsh restrictions on women, announced it was lifting a ban prohibiting them from driving, as well as reopening cinemas
