April 29 2020: National / International Current Affairs

1. Cabinet bans export of all edible items

• The federal cabinet on April 28, 2020 banned exports of all edible items to ensure adequate food supply to the local market during the countrywide lockdown due to coronavirus and gave additional three weeks to an inquiry commission conducting the forensic audit of recent sugar and wheat scams.
• A meeting of the cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan also stopped export of anti malaria drug called chloroquine till its approval by the health ministry.
• `In order to ensure sufficient food supplies during the lockdown, the prime minister was of the view that export of essential consumer items should be banned till normality in the coronavirus situation,` newly appointed Information Minister Shibli Faraz told Dawn when contacted after the meeting. No routine press briefing was held to inform the media about the decisions taken by the cabinet; rather an official press release was issued about the meeting.


2. Police launch new mechanism to assess field officers` performance

• Inspector General of Police Shoaib Dastagir has evaluated the performance of the senior field police officers by allocating `points` under a newly launched accountability mechanism.
• The points were allocated to the district police officers and city police officers following a detailed analysis of the statistics of heinous crime under various heads/categories including murder, kidnapping for ransom, rape, motor vehicle snatching etc.
• The performance will be made part of office record to help the Central Police Office (CPO) for future appointments of the police officers against field assignments.


3. Plane carrying aid arrives from UAE

• The United Arab Emirates (UAE) sent a plane to Pakistan carrying 14 metric tons of medical and food supplies to help in the fight against Covid-19 in the country.
• A special plane carrying medical aid and food supplies landed at Islamabad International Airport on April 28, 2020 night.
• It will assist approximately 7,000 medical professionals as they work to contain the spread of novel coronavirus.


4. S. Asia may face new health crisis as children miss vaccinations: UN

• South Asia could face a further public health crisis as children miss routine vaccinations, the UN warned on Tuesday, spurring fears that the fallout from the novel coronavirus pandemic might reverse hard-earned gains in the region.
• The United Nations children`s agency UNICEF said hundreds of thousands were at risk as lockdowns across South Asia halted immunisation drives and parents refrained from taking their children to doctors to be inoculated.
• `While the Covid-19 virus does not appear to make many children seriously ill, the health of hundreds of thousands of children could be impacted by this disruption of regular immunisation services, said Jean Gough, director of UNICEF`s South Asia office.


5. UNICEF, Zong join hands against Covid-19

• UNICEF and Zong, the telecommunications services provider, have joined hands to help inform the public in Pakistan about Covid-19.
• As part of the partnership, Zong 4G will use all its digital channels to disseminate accurate and reliable information on the virus.
• The campaign aims at reaching Zong 4G`s over 37 million customers through multiple platforms and channels, the UN agency said in a press release on April 28, 2020.


6. 7.1 billion people forced to stay home, study reveals

• Cross borders movements have come to a standstill in much of the world as countries close their borders to visitors and sometimes their own citizens in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
• The Pew Research Center, Washington, which conducted the study, reports that currently 7.1 billion people live in countries with restrictions on people arriving from other countries who are neither citizens nor residents.
• This is 91 percent of the world`s population including tourists, business travelers and new immigrants who have been forced to stay at home.


7. US commission urges govt to place India on list of countries violating religious freedom

• `Perhaps the steepest, and most alarming, deterioration in religious freedom conditions was in India, the largest democracy in the world,` an official US report said on April 28, 2020.
• The report, compiled by the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), recommended that India be declared a `country of particular concern.
• `We are seeing impunity for violence by non-state actors committed against religious minorities,` said Ted Perkins, the commission`s chairman.
• `India took a sharp downward turn in 2019, with religious minorities under increasing assault,` the USCIRF, which is a bipartisan agency of the federal government, observed.


8. Attack in Syrian town run by Turkish-backed fighters kills 40

• A fuel tanker exploded on April 28, 2020 in an attack on a northern Syrian town controlled by Turkish backed opposition fighters, killing at least 40 civilians, Turkeys Defence Ministry said.
• The Defence Ministry tweeted that the attack took place in a crowded street in Afrin and the dead included 11 children. The ministry said 47 people were wounded.
• Turkey`s state news agency cited unnamed security officials who said the attack was believed to have been carried out by Syrian Kurdish fighters linked to Kurdish militants fighting Turkey


9. Lebanese riot on streets as economy crumbles

• Lebanese protesters confronted army troops for a second day on April 28, 2020 as anger over a spiralling economic crisis re-energise d a months old anti-government movement in defiance of a coronavirus lockdown.
• Scuffles resumed in Tripoli as protesters hurled rocks at security forces who fired a volley of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators.
• The violence came after a protester died on Tuesday from a bullet wound he had sustained during overnight confrontations between troops and hundreds of demonstrators in Tripoli.


10. Ex-Liverpool striker Robinson dies

• Former Liverpool striker Michael Robinson has died at the age of 61, the Premier League club said on April 28, 2020.
• The former Ireland international, who won a league, League Cup and European Cup treble with Liverpool in the 1983-84 season, also played for Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers before ending his career with Spain`s Osasuna.
• Leicester-born Robinson stayed in Spain after his playing career finished in 1989 and became are spected television commentator, pundit and presenter.
