May 30, 2020: National / International Current Affairs

1. Outbound international flights resume today

• The government has allowed the resumption of international flights only for outbound passengers from Saturday (May 30, 2020) from all international airports of Pakistan except Gwadar and Turbat.
• The federal government had decided to allow outbound international flights (scheduled, nonscheduled and chartered flights) from 11.59pm on Saturday night.
• Both national and foreign airlines would be allowed to operate from allinternational airports of Pakistan, with the exception of Gwadar and Turbat.

2. In a first, ship with fertiliser for Afghanistan berths at Gwadar Port

• A ship carrying 16,400 tonnes of DAP fertiliser for Afghanistan anchored at the Gwadar Port on May 29, 2020.
• The ship brought fertiliser from Australia under the Pak-Afghan Transit Trade Agreement.
• This is the first time Gwadar port is being used for import of urea by the Afghan government.
• The chairman of Gwadar Port Authority, Naseer Ahmed Kashani, said that with the arrival of the urea-loaded ship, the Gwadar Port had been opened for Afghan transit trade. `Another ship loaded with 16,000 tonnes of urea and 500,000 tonnes of sugar and wheat would reach the port next month,` Mr Kashani told Dawn, adding that urea consignment would be sent to Afghanistan by road.

3. Pakistani peacekeeper awarded Dag Hammarskjold medal

• Pakistani peacekeeper Sepoy Amir Aslam, who served the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjold medal by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at a ceremony held at the UN headquarters on May 29, 2020.
• At the ceremony a total of 83 military, police, and civilian personnel from 39 countries who lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping operations last year were honoured.

4. Govt reopens non-Muslim places of worship

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has lifted a ban on prayers and congregations in non-Muslim places of worships.
• However, worshippers will have to follow safety guidelines in churches, temples and gurdwaras to prevent virus.
• The relief rehabilitation and settlement department notified the lifting of the ban saying it is subject to revision in light of the Covid-19 situation and advice of health experts.

5. Indian drone shot down near Line of Control

• The Army shot down an Indian reconnaissance drone, the second in two days, after it intruded into Azad Kashmir from across the Line of Control (LoC) on May 29, 2020, according to the military`s media affairswing.
• `Pakistan Army troops shot down an Indian spying quadcopter which came from Kanzalwan sector, intruded 700 metres into the Pakistan side of the LOC in Nekrun sector,` said Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar, director general of the Inter Services Public Relations(ISPR), in a late night tweet.
• Pakistan had shot down an Indian spying quadcopter in Rakhchikri sector of Haveli district on Wednesday after it intruded 650 metres into Azad Kashmir.

6. India surpasses China with 4,706 Covid-19 deaths

• India`s coronavirus death toll passed neighbouring China`s on May 29, 2020, with 175 new fatalities in 24 hours taking the total to 4,706, according to official data.
• The death toll from the pandemic spiked again in Russia and the Americas, even as Europe`s experiment with reopening from lockdown grew bolder by the day.
• India, home to some of the world`s most packed cities and a creaking healthcare system, is emerging as a new hotspot with record jumps in new cases in recent days

7. WHO, 37 countries launch alliance to share tools to battle virus

• Thirty-seven countries and the World Health Organisation (WHO) appealed on May 29, 2020 for common ownership of vaccines, medicines and diagnostic tools to tackle the global coronavirus pandemic, taking aim at patent laws they fear could become a barrier to sharing crucial supplies.
• While the push by mostly developing nations, called the Covid-19Technology Access Pool, won praise from groups including Doctors Without Borders, a drug industry aHiance quesdoned if the effort to pool intellectual property would really broaden access to medicines.
• Developing and some small nations fear rich countries pumping resources into finding vaccines more than 100 are in development will muscle their way to the front of the queue, once a candidate succeeds.

8. US issues workplace health and safety plan as offices reopen

• Do temperature and symptom checks of returning employees. Place plastic shields around desk or keep them six feet apart. Ban seating in common areas.
• Wear face coverings at all times.
• These are some of the key points of a `workplace health and safety plan` that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued on May 29, 2020 for reopening offices after the coronavirus lockdown. The official US health agency also urges employers to take the following precautions before resuming business operations: Ensure that ventilation systems operate properly. `Review heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Increase circulation of outdoor air by opening windows and doors, using fans, and other methods.

9. India denies Trump called Modi on China border tension

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not spoken with US President Donald Trump about the south Asian nation`s military standoff with China, a government source said on May 29, 2020, after Trump suggested Modi was upset about border tension.
• The neighbours` troops have been facing off along the disputed border in the western Himalayas since early May, after Chinese troops intruded into Indian territory, Indian military of ficials say.
• `They have a big conflict going with India and China. Two countries with 1.4 billion people. Two countries with very powerful militaries, Trump told reporters, according to a White House transcript.

10. Taliban storm Afghan border post, kill 14 security men

• Taliban fighters stormed an Afghan border post on Friday, killing at least 14 security force members, the militants and officials said.
• It was the latest in a series of attacks since the end of a brief ceasefire.
• Despite the clashes, Afghan authorities have vowed to press on with efforts to help reduce violence following the temporary pause in fighting.
