1. Govt okays Russian vaccine for `emergency use

• The government has allowed another vaccine against Covid-19 under `emergency use authorisation` and given a go-ahead to a local pharmaceutical company for the import and distribution of the Russian developed Sputnik V, an official confirmed on January 23, 2021.
• With the fresh decision, the official said, Russia`s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine became the third to be approved for emergency use in the country


2. PIA to cough up $2m for plane lease

• The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is in talks with Irish aircraft broker Peregrine Aviation Charlie Limited to pay about $2 million as part of an outstanding payment for an aircraft lease agreement by the Dublin-based company Aer Cap.
• During a hearing at the High Court on January 23, 2021, a lawyer representing PIA informed the judge that the national flag carrier had paid $7m to Peregrine as part of the lease agreement, but a dispute persists for the remainder of $2m.


3. SNGPL resumes gas supply to CNG stations in Punjab, Islamabad

• As the peak winter seems to have subsided and the mercury level gradually rising, the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) on January 23, 2021 decided to resume gas supply to filling stations in Punjab and Islamabad from Sunday (today).
• `The CNG stations are allowed to resume business from 6am January 24, 2021 (Sunday),` the SNGPL said in a statement


4. Country may get free vaccines in first quarter of year

• Availability of free-of-cost Covid-19 vaccine seems to have been assured for Pakistan as Covax has announced that it will acquire 150 million doses in the first quarter and two billion doses by the end of the year.
• It further said that, out of the two billion doses, 1.3bn will be provided to 92 lower-income economies. As a result of this agreement, chances of Pakistan getting the free doses in the first quarter of the current year seem to have brightened


5. Construction of warships another milestone in Turkey-Pakistan defence ties: Erdogan

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan January 23, 2021 launched the welding of third ship to be constructed for Pakistan Navy under MILGEM project.
• Ambassador of Pakistan in Turkey Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi also accompanied the Turkish president at the groundbreaking of the third of the four MILGEM Ada class corvette for Pakistan Navy in Istanbul.


6. Trump impeachment trial put off until early February

• The leaders of the US Senate agreed on Friday to push back former President Donald Trump`s impeachment trial by two weeks, giving the chamber more time to focus on President Joe Biden`s legislative agenda and cabinet nominees before turning to the contentious showdown over Trump.
• Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said the trial is set to begin during the week of Monday Feb 8, an arrangement praised by the chamber`s top Republican, Mitch McConnell


7. Biden administration to review US-Taliban withdrawal deal

• The Biden administration said it will review a landmark US deal with the Taliban, focusing on whether the insurgent group has reduced attacks in Afghanistan, in keeping with its side of the agreement.
• Washington struck a deal with the Taliban in Qatar last year, to begin withdrawing its troops in return for security guarantees from the militants and a commitment to kick-start peace talks with the Afghan government


8. Too early to draw Covid origin conclusions: WHO

• The World Health Organization said January 23, 2021 it was too early to draw any conclusions from its mission to Wuhan as to whether the Covid-19 pandemic started in China.
• A team of WHO experts arrived in Wuhan on January 14 to start probing the origins of the deadly coronavirus, more than a year after the first cases were detected in the central Chinese city.
• They were whisked to a hotel to complete a two-week quarantine


9. Talk show host Larry King dies at 87

• Larry King, who quizzed thousands of world leaders, politicians and entertainers for CNN and other news outlets in a career spanning more than six decades, has died aged 87.
• `For 63 years and across the platforms of radio, television and digital media, Larry`s many thousands of interviews, awards, and global acclaim stand as a testament to his unique and lasting talent as a broadcaster,` it said.


10. GB team wins ice skating, hockey championships

• The Gilgit-Baltistan Ski Association team on January 23, 2021 won both the ice speed skating and the 3rd ice hockey championships during the ongoing winter sports festival being held at the PAF Ski Resort in Naltar.
• The Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts team clinched the 28th National Alpine Ski Championship
